Laila is the little sister of RnB singer Zaria. Laila is sometimes shy and quite. When she’s alone she enjoys reading and deep thinking. She has always been very bright and her family questions her decision to not go to college. After graduating high school top of her class she realized that all the stuff she had learned was pointless and didn’t think it was necessary to spend so much money on more years of pointless knowledge. Laila is more interested in expanding her knowledge on uncovering the lies of the media, and educating herself on the history of Africa that public school swept under the rug. She knew that college was not the only way to make a living; she was pro entrepreneurship and decided to get her beauty license. Luckily she is quite creative and good with her hands. She has just decided to leave Atlanta, Georgia to go to Miami and move in with her older sister. She’s helping her sister to promote a new music project and hoping that the move will help to jump start her career as a celebrity hair and makeup artist/stylist. In Georgia she leaves behind her boyfriend Kalonji. They recently just got in argument before she left about her leaving. She is hoping the space will help to cool things down between them and make things a little better.
Kalonji is the boyfriend of Laila Dixon and is 24 years old. He is a 24/7 street hustler. He pretty much runs the area where he lives in Atlanta. He’s Laila’s bad boy. They have known each other since the 11th grade, but they have only officially been together for the last 3 years. He brings her that thrill she wants from time to time. Their relationship has been frowned upon by many. Laila’s family feels like he is trouble and is a good for nothing, controlling man. They blame him for Laila not going to college and say that he is a bad influence to her. Before Laila met him she was very naďve about the world and didn’t too many social events, but that all changed. Kalonji introduced her to the night life and even got her to start experimenting with her sexual side and took her virginity in the 12th grade. Kalonji is having a hard time excepting the fact that Laila is leaving him to go to Miami, but he knows he can’t leave because he has to keep on his grind at home. She made him promise that would visit her as soon as he could and he promised her she would.
Zaria is Laila’s older sister who is 26. Zaria is a rising RnB singer and knew that she wanted to be a star ever since she was little. When it comes to her music she doesn’t play any games, and only wants the best, but she definitely is not stuck up. She has been living in Miami for going on 2 years now and has been gaining much success in her career. She just recently started working on a new project and is in the process of promoting it. In hopes for a new look to go with the new project, she asks her sister to come up with a new image for her.
Brianna is a mutual friend of Laila and Zaria who is 25. She lives in Miami and is living her life as a celebrity socialite and enjoys every minute of the rich and lavish lifestyle. Her favorite events are parties and interviewing celebrities on the red carpet. She has been known to be very flirtatious with men and is down for whatever. She’s not shy at all and she knows what she wants and she knows how to get it, but has failed to get the attention of Damian. They once had a one nightstand and has been yearning to get another taste of the Rastaman ever since. She says that he’s the best that she’s ever had. She knows that Damian just say it as a one-time thing and she doesn’t sweat it, cause she knows there another man coming soon.
Damian Marley is 26 and is good friends with Zaria. He and Zaria have been really close since she has moved to Miami. They have been working on a couple of songs together lately and things have been going well. He is a Rasta and lives his life as so. He doesn’t cut his hair except for when he trims his facial hair and has let his dreads grow down to his ankles. But don’t get him wrong, Damian is a very clean tidy person. For a long time he was a vegetarian but has adjusted to adding fish in his diet and on rare occasions chicken (not fried). And yes, he smokes weed, it allows him to be a free thinker and helps him find inspiration in his music. He is also a father to his 1 ˝ year old son Elijah but he is not with the child’s mother. He’s a rolling stone just as his father was but manages to keep his affairs extremely private. Like most Jamaican men he's a sweet talker and knows just what to say to a woman. But despite all of that he's a very caring and humble person who likes to have fun and see everybody smiling around him.
Shiah is Damian's 26 year old best friend and bassist. Damian and Shiah have known each other for most of their lives being that they are both from Jamaica and both sons of legends. He produces alot of Damian's songs. To those who do not know Shiah, when standing next to Damaian most would think that he was one of Damian's brothers. He too is of a very fair skin complexion and appears to be biracial. he also has long locs like Damian but nowhere near as long as his. Shiah is a very humble and friendly person and just wants peace.
The 26 year old mother of Damian's son Elijah. She is a Trinidadian super model. She is having a hard time dealing with not being with Damian. She once was his main squeeze but could not accept his Rasta lifestyle. He has left her heartbroken and wanting to fix things.
Preface
The day is Thursday May 6th 9:00 am. The sound of an alarm goes off and awakens Laila to a new day. She arises groggy after the long night full of fussing, fighting, and tears. She had anticipated this day for a little while now, and she knew it would be bittersweet. She was ready to take her career to the next level, but knew that Kalonji would be that one person that didn’t support her decision. Flash backs replay in her head of last night. His words hurt her but she knew that she couldn’t let that stand in the way of her career. She looks over and sees Kalonji isn’t in the bed next to her. She sits up and takes a big stretch and walks over to the bathroom to groom herself. She walks in and glances in the mirror.
“Damn.” She said as she notices the puffiness of her eyes. Whenever she cried hard that would happen. She stayed in the mirror for a while and gently pressed on the puffy spots around her eye to try to get them to go down. Luckily she had enough time spend before she her flight left at 12.
Laila took her time getting dressed and ready to go. She wanted to avoid Kalonji for as long as she could. She picked up her phone to see how much time she had killed. Only an hour and 5 minutes. She knew she would have to see him sooner or later. She took a last glance into the mirror, got her bags together and put them by the front door. While walking passing the kitchen she catches a quick glimpse of Kalonji at the table. She puts the bags down and goes into the kitchen.
“Hey,” she says softly.
“Hey,” he said with a blank expression on his face. “Your breakfast is in the fridge.”
Laila walks over and opens the fridge and sees he made her a fruit salad. He knew it was her favorite especially if it had strawberries and bananas in it.
“Thank you.”
She grabs her bowl out and heads to the table to eat. The awkward silence had set in and Laila could feel his eyes piercing at her. She knew that he wanted to say something to her, but he didn’t know what to say. He just leaned back in his chair and slouched a little. Laila looked up at him from her bowl, and stared at him back. She couldn’t read the expression on his face, but she figured that he must have felt bad about last night. He was never the type to really directly apologize to a person, but instead do things to express his apology.
“You should go ahead and eat so you can get to the airport early Laila.”
“Are you coming with me?”
He did not answer at first. He sat in silence and sighed, “Yeah, I’ll go with you.”
Laila went back to her breakfast and felt a little bit better inside. Kalonji was being somewhat nice to her right now. This was definitely not how she thought her morning would be today. Even though it was awkward, she thought of it in a positive way. She got her fruit salad and her man was being very accepting right now. Laila quickly finished her food and put the bowl in the sink.
“Thank you,” she said to him again.
“You’re welcome.”
The two walked out the kitchen and put her bags in the car and got in. Before Kalonji could pull off he looked over at her and asked if she was ok. She replied with a yes and he leaned over and kissed her.
“I love you,” he said softly.
“I love you too.”
He pulled out of the driveway and Laila couldn’t help but to take one last look at their apartment. It still amazes her sometimes how they lived such a low-key life style and actually had a nice home despite Kalonji’s work. He had two cars. He had one nice Cadillac and one simple Honda Accord that he uses as a decoy. He called the Caddy his uptown car and the Honda is Downtown car. Kalonji had given Laila a beautiful Malibu 2 months ago, and it is her baby. She couldn’t wait to be sitting in it again. She didn’t want to be car-less while she was in Miami so she had to drop her car off at Mainline and they would transport it to Miami for her. It would arrive two days from now.
“Thank you for being understanding,” Laila said looking at Kalonji.
“It’s all good. I know I said some selfish stuff last night to you, but I can’t stop you from getting ya hustle on, ya know?”
“I’m guessing that was his apology me to me.” Laila thought to herself. Just then her phone vibrated. It was Zaria; she had texted her. It read:
“Hey, are you still coming?”
Laila looked at the message and was confused as to why her sister would ask her that.
“Yeah… What made you think I wasn’t?”
It took her awhile to respond.
“Look I know it’s none of my business but I think you accidentally called me last night, I heard the whole argument.”
Laila looked at the message sighed and just put her phone back in her purse.
“Great, this is exactly what I don’t need right now. Somebody up in my business to telling me about my relationship.”
“You good?” Kalonji ask Laila
“Yeah.”
The whole rest of the trip it was quiet and she refused to look at her phone. It had vibrated twice since she had last checked it. Kalonji found a parking space. He knew he would have to keep Laila out since it was her first time flying and she didn’t really know what to do.
“When will you come and visit me?” Laila asked.
“Soon.”
Laila hated when he answered her questions like that. He never gave her a direct question when it dealt with something that could interfere with his work.
“Why you can’t just give me an answer.”
“I did just give you an answer. You been with me long enough baby, you know how it is. Don’t start poutin over there.” He looks over at Laila then pulls her close to him. “Look I don’t want this to end on a bad note man, so don’t act like that with me. You will know when I'm coming I will let you know. I’m not gonna forget about you Laila. You know I got you girl. I always keep my promises don’t I?”
“Yeah you do.” She said.
“Aight then Laila don’t worry bout that. Text me when you make it there, aight?”
“Ok babe.”
“Aight, now come give me hug.”
She embraced him into her arms, and they both held each other tight. Even though they fought she knew that she was going to miss him a lot. She took a deep breath and took her last inhale of his aroma. His cologne and the smell of his hair was something that she always loved and she knew she would miss the smell. They let go and went in for a kiss.
“Damn, Imma miss them lips girl. You better not give all that good stuff to anybody else. Save it for me Ma.”
“Imma save it for you. You better do the same.”
“Yes Ma’am you got my word, have a good flight.”
They hugged each other one more time before they parted and then went separate ways. She turned around and saw the line to go through TSA and knew it would be a little while before she would be up front. She decided to read her sister’s message. The first one read:
“Sooo you just gonna ignore me?”
The next one was long and said:
“Laila I don’t understand why you still mess with him. I heard everything that he said to you. If a man is gonna be so selfish to say things to you to make you stay for his own reasons, then he doesn’t need to be with you. He needs to respect you decision to excel in your career. Laila you could do so much better than to be with him and you know it. I’m not going to preach to you but I am just saying. But I’m done talking about that; I will not mention anything about it when you get here, but know that I know about how he treats you foreal. But I really can’t wait to see you again sis <3”
Laila knew that her sister didn’t mean any harm by what she said. She let all her anger and frustration go. It was a new day filled with new beginnings; she couldn't wait to start her new life.
Please tell me what you think and if you want more!
