Hey Folks. I have a question and it is not trolling. I have a $400 travel voucher from Delta to do a trip. I have to use it before the year is up. Ironically, because of the high fares for the Holidays, Santo Domingo is the most affordable place to take a trip the last weekend of this year.
I am a very dark man, and have heard from some people that it may cause me problems because the natives will assume I am Haitian and blah, blah, blah. I want to go. I am very respectful of the fact that I will be in another country, and I am not about to talk smack to anyone who offends me. I'm a grown man, but I am concerned that the discrimination I could face may be a bit more than the normal stuff in the US.
Again, not trolling. I am sincere, and want advice from people who know/have visited/lived in the DR.

Thanks.
so what if they assume you are Haitian so fucking what?
I have been to Punta Cana many times but stayed with a friend who owns a home there.
Remember to say thank you and please at ALL times
be respectful to the women and senior citizens
remove your hat when entering homes.
do NOT discuss politics and stay AWAY from Haitian vs Dominican discussions
food is ok.I usually eat a lot more fish when over there.I am not a friend food person and they eat a lot of fried food
p.s: before you leave the US make sure to make copies of your ID cards, passport and call the US Embassy to let them know you will be flying to the DR and have you ID card with you and have the hotel store passport for you
and DON'T party with anyone you don't know;chicks you don't know and go to places you don't know that are deserted. This is a foreign country to you remember that
the DR is a beautiful place;have fun;take pictures;walk around, behave yourself;stay in your lane as far as (politics, women, drug s,alcohol, prostitute s) and you'll always remember your visit and will want to go back
I would suggest that if you're visiting the Dominican Republic, to visit Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, or Samana - the beaches and the scenery is stunning. You'll enjoy Santo Domingo as well especially if you're on a budget.
I was born in the DR, visit from time to time and I'm not gonna lie, there is some anti Haitian sentiments and darker skin is looked down upon for SOME Dominicans but definitely not all and I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. As long as you're friendly, respectful open minded, buy things, give good tips and speak some conversational spanish, I think you're gonna be allllllriiightt
Enjoy.
I've been to the D.R. over thirty times in my life. I guess I'm considered dark. I have never had an issue. I know folks two shades darker than me, that have been more times than me...and have had WAY better times than I have ever had. Trouble finds those who treat the locals with disrespect and contempt....and the locals will already know you aren't Dominican or Haitian when they see you (i.e. you open your mouth).
I went to Punta Cana in October and it was everything. The point is you will blend in because your Black, but once they find out your American, you will be bombarded because they expect you to have cash.
Stay in safe areas, but if you stay in a tourist friendly area, you will be fine.
You'll be fine. As soon as you open your mouth they'll know your American. At that point all they see is green ($) not black.
Exactly he is American who they assume has money. They don't care how dark he is as long as the money is green and american.
Also he needs to be careful of the women because sex tourism is big out there and often times you can't tell the difference between the prostitutes and the local women.
first of all, my husband is haitian and when we got to s.d. everyone SWORE he was dominican, so whatever to whatever bullshit you've heard.
second of all, so they might think you're haitian. and??? once dominicans found out my husband was haitian they were still nothing but nice to him. maybe that was because he was a tourist and not looking a for a job, but it's not like he got spit on and asked to leave the country.
third of all, you're an american. when people hear your lame-as-fuck accent (this assuming you even speak spanish in the first place) they will know you're american and things will be sunshine and lolipops from there on in for you.
and as a dark skinned black man, you might wanna have some sympathy for your brothers and not be so concerned that you might be lumped in with them.

OP you might want to google black travel websites because some Black people have posted messages about their experiences in the DR. I've heard dark-skinned women aren't treated too well over there. Since you're a dark-skinned man, your experience might be the same as a dark-skinned female. You're also American, so people may treat you differently. I've also heard that if you're worried about safety while traveling abroad, you should be okay if you stay near the resorts.
Do you speak Spanish? I find that if you do, your time there will be easier. Also, they will know you aren't Haitian as soon as you open your mouth. And just because you are darkskinned doesn't mean you're Haitian. You could be from one of the other islands, from Africa, the US or South America. If you can avoid it, don't travel to the DR alone. Be careful everywhere and don't go off with strangers, even strange women (even the beautiful ones). People target tourists, even some of the hotel workers (don't bring a lot of valuables with you and keep your valuables locked/on you).
Horseback riding is amazing in DR. Beaches are beautiful. Food is good. People are friendly. I think that if you have money and they know you are American you should be fine. There are dark Latinos too, in case you didn't know that.
Don't fall in love. Those women are fine as hell and tricky as hell, IJS.
I had a gigantic roommate who really thought he had a fiancee in the DR. Had her pics on the wall and shit, writing his congressman to speed up her immigration. It was like Tisha Campbell engaged to Norbit. I was like...
NO idea how that turned out. I moved out before she was slated to arrive, and he creeped me out too much for me to stay in contact.
