harlem renaissance art
Ok the dog painting thread was a huge fail. How about some harlem renaissance (my favorite period in american hist) for the home....
I believe this would encompass any black artists that dropped stuff between 1920 - 1940. Dont quote me.
Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence (remember the one cosbys' had in their living room) are some heavyweights in this category. But there are more!
Im also on the lookout for a good Josephine Baker poster to frame, but I keep seeing the same ones!
Btw, anyone read her biography? Damn good.
Random examples...

This gallery has acquired a collection of his work:
Howard Greenberg Gallery
His work is an archival interpretation of Harlem....I love his work. Additionally, when I've made an enquiry to purchase, I was given quotes from $2000-20,000.

I love the photos of Josephine Baker and Dorothy Dandridge. I'm trying to find some to hang up for my place too!

Re: harlem renaissance art
I have several pieces in my home..... I also found a collection of 5 old 1920 - 1950 Black Cinema Movie Posters on eBay that costs me a mint…..but they are all professionally framed and are a Hit!
I have some original photos of Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy, and Duke Ellington....
I have some mounted original concert posters of Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong…..
My home looks like a Harlem Renaissance haven............... .

Re: harlem renaissance art
Yes, the Harlem Renaissance is definitely an era I love. I really appreciate the one with Josephine Baker. I would love to acquire more black and white photos of that era particularly of dancers.

Damn....the early 20th century posters is what I would love most. I happened by this hole-in-the-wall place today that sold old movie and music posters...there was so much, I am going to go back and comb through them all.
If I could find the european versions, particularly french, that would complement my decor perfectly.

I'm in lovveeeee ... that is without parallel or equal my favorite era of African American history. I mean Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Langston and Zora??? Some of the greatest writers of our time. Did you guys know that after the HR Countee (whose book "Color" is accredited by historians as being the very start of the HR) could not find work and would end up teaching??? Well one of his students was James Baldwin!!!
Back to topic ... I know Gordon Parks photographed many of the cultural icons of that time and those pix would make a lovely addition to any art collection. I have a Jacob Lawrence print in my home but my favorite painter of that time was probably William H Johnson (back in Junior High my Art teacher had me do a recreation of one of his pieces and I fell in love) ...
Another favorite of mine from around that era would be Charles White, the renowned muralist ...
And I absolutely love how his work inspired painters to come such as Lawrence Finney (who is featured in a member's avi) ...
And although she may not have been as well known as the others, I find Augusta Savage's sculpture breathtaking ...
Gr8 thread ladies!!!
