Enjoy your big banks. Hope you got big money to give to them as well.
A wire transfer across the Atlantic from a small bank costs less than that.

I have heard so many bad stories about BoA that I would sooner keep my money in my sock drawer than bank with them.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
I think they should look into some regulation that would make certain allowances for overdrafts for small amounts and also where people would have the option to have their account decline purchases if the money is not there...I'm gonna look into that myself cuz nobody really wants to deal with fees on small oversights.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
i'm int the exact same situation, only for me I took money out of my savings and put it into my checking. The bank canceled the transfer so they could charge me overdraft fees, then they put a fee in my savings account so I'm in the red on BOTH accounts.
I really don't know what I'm going to do. I called and they were extremely rude. I'm done with this bank.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
BOA f*cked me over one good time. I purchased some Ticketmaster tickets from Kroger and the unexperienced chick behind the counter ran my card twice causing an overdraft. Needless to say BOA would not reverse the fees and they argued with me. I was like if I wanted to buy 4 tickets I would've all at the same time. I'm not gonna buy 2 tickets, then get 2 more with a different transaction a minute later. They would not believe me. Needless to say, I left them soooooooo fast. Also, you should have an option for your card to be "declined" instead of getting overdraft fees.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
When I first got my account my card would decline if I used it as a debit card, now they just let anything go through. Money has no value if you can spend it when you don't have it.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
That happened to me last summer- a .99 cent overdraft turned into $300 in fees.
That+direct deposit= me with no money.
I switched to wachovia- though they are a little slow sometimes with getting cash processed, their customer service is the SHIT!
I've had one overdraft since then ( due to me making a late deposit) and they refunded me all of it.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
Yup BOA are the worst ..They got my sister for $700 6 years ago ..Someone fraudulently used her CC while it was it is in her possession ..We believe it was one of the vendors who she shops online with , but anyway BOA said after they finish resolving the dispute "they are unable to reverse her fess because they don't know what kind of contract she has with the vendor "Meaning that they have no idea to determine if she agreed to let the store take the funds out of her account ..UNBELIEVABLE .

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
I bank with BOA and I haven't had any problems. BUT that could be cuz I aint had no money to overdraft with them.
I suspect that they're being ASSHOLES now because they are LITERALLY the Bank OF AMERICA. If they lose you for poor customer service, all you're likely going to go to another bank they own or recently bought.

I have a wachovia account. I went to eat, and the restaurant put a hold on my account for THREE meals instead of one. Wachovia preemptively charged me an overdraft fee. I looked at my account and saw that I had an overdraft fee, but my account was still positive. How the fuck??? They saw it was a merchant error and took the fee off immediately.
When he gave me my money back I said "I'm actually really a nice person, I just don't like people to mess with my money. Thanks for refunding the fee.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
As bad as Bank of America is, Chase is bad too. Chase will let you know that they take the largest amount out first. So if you have 5 purchases that total up to 20.00 ($11, $3, $2, $2, $2) and one purchase that is 190.00 and you only have 200.00 in your account, even if the smaller purchases were made first, they will take out the large one then the next largest one and so forth, so they can debit the five on a negative account.
On a sidenote: Um why did the man not have $5 in his account? I get that a $35 dollar overdraft fee is a lil much for a $1 dollar purchase, but if he says didn't use that account much then he should have at least called to check the balance or why not just use his primary account for a $5 dollar purchase.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
BoA will waive a overdraft fee if you ask. My fee usually comes from transferring money from my savings to checking for overdraft protection (they will waive it once a year). I have yet to have a problem with BoA.
If I am reading right; he didn't even have a $1 in his account to begin with. I find it hard to believe someone wouldn't know if they had a BUCK in their account. BoA isn't in the wrong, it's the video place. I wonder if their pratice is legal. When you go grocery shopping, do they charge you individually for each item? He should look into that.
All his problems would have been avoided if he went to BoA website (on the same computer he's blogging on) and checked his balance. They also have a 800 number that's faster than Chase's that he could have checked as well.
BoA waived one of the fees for him! He needs to take the rest up with the video store. Don't blame BoA, he's the one who let the additional fees accumulate. BoA is going to make their money regardless.
Stop blaming other people for your FAULTS(isn't that a thread?)!

They got me like that too, before I closed my account. I thought it was me! I initiated a transfer online, saw it go through, saw the money in my checking, closed the window and went on with my day. About two days later, they put some statement on my account talking about the transfer failed so they bounced the purchase I was trying to make, several hours AFTER I had made the transfer. And charged me an o/d fee.
I argued that they could clearly see where I attempted a transfer. hence the failed transfer note, and the money was in my savings -- but since I didn't have o/d protection, they couldn't take it from my savings, so I owed them. I could have spit nails, I was so mad. System errors are not their fault, they claim.
I hate them so much. I'm sure me taking my little five figure money and going elsewhere didn't hurt them. They didn't even try to stop me.

Re: How Bank of America turned $5 into $285
What I really don't understand about all of these fees is that everything is computerized now, the computers process the payments at lightning speed, without any (or very little) human interaction. They either accept or reject the transaction. Why the huge cost? 20-30 years ago, a human had to sit there and hand process each check, type it in, check the account, put it in a reject pile, print out a rejection note, stick it in an envelope, etc etc. Okay, they deserved a fee for that because they had to pay someone to do all that, and even then, it was like $12. Okay, I get inflation too. But now its a freaking computer doing it!!!! Is the fee to pay the electric bill for running the computers???? You'd think it would be cheaper or even free now!

They don't take the time to look into stuff cuz they don't have man power...they are making more money than ever but in the greatest debt ever as well. Everything is computerized and outsourced.
Basically what times like these are leaning towards people taking control of their money and stop using bank cards and checks and paying cash or getting accounts that do not honor withdrawals for amounts that are not there.
It's hard to not want to go with the convenience of paying bills online but at the risk of all these fees and confusion its better to get money orders from the post office and mail stuff on time.
The cash only policy is seeming like a solution for people that have messed up with bank accounts and credit.
