Families with 10+ children
Do any of you all know anyone with over 10 children? Do you know how they coped? As an only child, I really want a large family. I know children and babies can be hard work but I think it is something I want to have. A large family would suit me down to the ground.
P.S. I know I sound crazy.

Re: Families with 10+ children
I am not going to say that you sound crazy b/c in the past, having a lot of kids was the norm. If your heart will allow you to love 10+ children and you are able to provide a stable, secure enviroment for them then go for it. I just don't agree with people who have all those kids for financial gain (taxes, etc) knowing they can not take care of those kids themselves.

Yes, I feel you on that one. I don't want to exploit them or whatever like Octomom. It is just my family is relatively small. I have only two cousins.

Re: Families with 10+ children
10 children... that's a lot. 4 is considered large by today's standards. I think having 10 kids is really expensive in a country like America, to be honest.
Anyway, I don't come from a family of 10+ kids but 6. But we had uncles and cousins living with us. How do you cope? I don't know... the older ones help out with their younger siblings. Plus we also had hired help.

Re: Families with 10+ children
When I was younger, a former neighbor had 13 children and most of them were about two years apart. Whenever I would visit her, she appeared to have control over the household. But who knows what would go on while I wasn't there. But I can say that they never looked sloppy and most of them were well-mannered and respectful to others in the neighborhood. Personally, I desire a large family as well, I'm just uncertain as to whether I do or don't want it to be THAT large. To this day, I still can't fathom how she did it, but I did look up to her as a stable influence as well as a loving, doting mother.

Re: Families with 10+ children
Okay,no I don't anyone who has attempted. But my honest opinion HUGE families like 10+ kids kind sets the kids back. (no offense to anyone who is in a large) But think about it, it takes almost a quarter of a million dollars to raise one kid in today's economy, you are pretty much guaranteeing that all of those kids are not going to college. Forget little league, ballet, karate, clothing, Groceries.. O__O Unless you are like old money or some shit, I just don't see it being economical at all-- no vacations, no eating out ever, (if the average meal is like 15 bucks a plate thats what? 180 bucks for a family of 12) LAUNDRY!!!! *faints*
Unless you are going to live on a farm and like just resign all those kids to working, being home schooled (because you'll need people their working all the time) and taking care of the younger ones (because you only come with two hands) what is the point?
Eh.. seems really hard and not that much fun. I just couldn't imagine having kids that I couldn't give the best possible start. I just don't think you can having that many kids O__O

I have 3 kids and a husband plus me and I faint over laundry. I couldn't imagine 10+.
As far as setting kids back...I can see your points but I do believe that some families can handle it and not be rich. Chris Rock came from a large family. i read his moms book and she did a great job. Her kids were well taken care of and they took part in activites. It is most definitely hard but not impossible.

Re: Families with 10+ children
My Sister had 12 the twinds died...she has 10 living. Her husband was one of 13. It is not easy. They home schooled. Cooking and clothing had to be creative. quality time had to be a group endeavor. And you can not work. It just isn't possible and discipline has to be on point for that many children. And the parents have to back each other up.

Re: Families with 10+ children
Yes I grew up in a neighborhood with several mormon families. They had a system. Everyone had a role to play in making the house run smoothly.
When you get married or if you already are, pop out one or two and see how you feel. I use to want five kids until I actually started having them. Now you can't pay me to have five.

Re: Families with 10+ children
My father is one of 14, my grandmother gave birth to 11 children and my grandfather had 3 childen when they met. He is 60 and from the South so alot of people during that time had large families. He gew up poor but there was alot of love. My grandmother was a very strong woman and held it down. My grandfather had a nervous breakdown at one point but they kept going.
My mother's story is a little more complicated biologically she is one of 13 but her aunt raised her and she had 3 biological children of her own. My mom was raised in Philly and had it a little easier then my dad. But we all have love for each other. It's amazing to see how many families come out of a large family dynamic.
My parents only had 2 children because they wanted to live a certain life and did not want to struggle...

Re: Families with 10+ children
I believe back in the day it was feasible to have large families, but these days raising a kid is so expensive. I don't see how anyone can do the large family thing, more power to you. I'm about to pass out from the cost of daycare alone and my child isn't even here yet! But it is nice being a part of a large family. I only have one sibling and we're 11 years apart, however my mom has 11 brothers and sisters who all had multiple kids, and my grandmother has 15 brothers and sisters, who all begat children, who begat children. I have a gazillion cousins. Let's just say our family reunions be off the hook! :-)

Re: Families with 10+ children
wow 10 is a big number but best of luck to you. i use to want 4 but after my daughter you couldn't pay me to have anymore............w ell maybe 1 more. i have 2 now and that is enough and i still faint over laundry.
IMO having that many kids kinda sucks for the older kids. they are the ones that become the 2nd mother/father.
just wait until you start having them and then report back to tell us if you still want 10, lol
