HA! My major (English) was up there...Can't say I disagree. Unless you're moving on to a graduate degree of some kind (which I did), or you're looking to become a teacher...I do think English is wasteless.
I don't agree with Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or Human Resources though. I think these can be valuable in the workplace.
Not surprised at seeing the liberal degrees as useless.People are so stick in the mud, boxed in,conformist. So worried about making sure they have good pay, that they shun degrees that bring out creativity.
English is useless? Not surprised there either, most people run from English courses like the plague.
A degree can only be useless if you don't know how to take advantage of all the opportunities.
Sure do. And judging from some of the grammar that I hear and edit on a regular basis, it looks like people should be required to take MORE english.
Before people say there is no such thing as a "useless" degree and that immigrants are coming in and racking up degrees... you should know that most immigrants are having their degrees paid for through scholarship and financial aid. Unlike most Americans they are not going into debt. Taking out lots of loans in the "hope" that it will be paid off, with no real proof or plan, is ultimately foolish. Because truth be told, debt makes you a slave to the debtor (banks and other corporations).
And btw, where you go to school does matter and does make a difference, most upper middle class people are not going to school for better job opportunities..puhle ase. They're going to school for valuable connections (including marriage prospects). That's ultimately the true value of college.
I wish that more people would grasp the concept of supply and demand. If everyone has it, it's not valuable anymore. Basic economics.
Yes every time a discussion about degrees come up the liberal arts in shunned. But in reality there are plenty of business school grads who have degrees in practical fields such as accounting and finance who also can't find jobs after they graduate.
Liberal Arts fields such as English and History are not useless because many students today cannot write to save their lives or do research which a lot of companies find appealing in a prospective employee. The key is to market your degree to whatever job you are applying for.
And last but not least to tell anyone especially black children that receiving a post-secondary education is useless should be a sin. We as African Americans cannot afford to just have a High School Diploma, because in today's economy those things are obsolete.
College isn't for everyone but trade schools, certifications, community colleges are all great options to further ones education.
I'm not saying that liberal arts degree is useless. I just don't like the idea that so many people expect to find "jobs" because of degrees or make their goal having a "good job", because a lot of those "good jobs" are going to disappear in the coming years. I think more people should be using their degrees as a tool to assist them in gaining knowledge and capital in starting their own businesses.

I don't think human resources is a useless degree , I chose it as My second Major with accounting . And in the past hours I have seen so Many ads for human resources jobs.
I don't think there are useless degree , just degree that require you to get really creative at the time of finding a job or putting your degree to use.
Chemistry is also not useless , but you usually need grad school to fully take advantage of it.

THANK YOU!!!
I don't care how much you know about computers or chemistry...if you can't read or write well you're not marketable. You have to be able to communicate with others effectively. There's no skill set that can replace reading and writing.
I think liberal arts degrees are differently valuable than your more traditional ones, but they're not useless.
I know people with all kinds of degrees and they're all in different predicaments--none of them necessarily related to their specific degree. Besides it's usually the choices you make with your life that affect your career more than anything and not so much which specific degrees you have...
Anyone who would describe any kind of an education as useless...is useless themselves...go kill yourself
Would you get a degree at University of Pheonix? How about Devry? Go to these schools and come back and tell me that all degrees are equal.I feel like a lot of people don't like to hear that they've wasted their money and must defend their choices til the end, whether their choices were beneficial or not.
It matters where you go to school, what you majored in and who you know. Go to school, but be sure to find scholarship and sufficient financial aid. If you take out loans, take out very few. Also, be aware of what kind of school you're going to and what their track record is. Also, make the most of what the school has to offer in special programs, internships and recruiting programs.

I am guessing you can read and write well enough if you have gained admittance to a reputable university. Any degree will include 30-40 page research papers that must be well written in order to pass. I dont know why anyone would major in English or anything that isnt tied to a specific career path unless they have a clear idea of what they want to do with it.

I go to a good, well-known university and you'd be surprised at the number of students who don't know how to write a solid paper. I've had to edit the work of seniors who can't write worth sh*t. All the run on sentences, awkward wording, and terrible grammar...it's depressing.
