This is a program called

Broad Residency - I found out about them 4 yrs ago at their booth at a National Black MBA conference - but never pursued bcos i had other priorities.

Let me Emphasize: THIS PROGRAM IS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE AT LEAST AN ADVANCED DEGREE AND INTERESTED IN WORKING IN EDUCATION SECTOR.

For those of you who want to work in Education and earn close 6 figures while at the same time help improve our inner city schools, please check out this program.

Its highly competitive to get in but anything is possible, You can do it if you put your mind to it. I would have applied but with an MBA already - i have decided no more school - at least not until i start a family.

The Broad Residency provides:

Immediate placement in a full-time managerial role in a school district or charter management organization reporting to a superintendent or top executive.

Opportunity to work on projects positively impacting student achievement
Eight quarterly professional development sessions over two years
Access to a national network of leaders making an impact in public education through management

$85,000 - $95,000 annual salary

The Broad Residency is a two-year leadership development program that places participants into full-time high-level managerial positions in school districts and charter management organizations (CMOs), where they can have an immediate impact on the education of America’s students.

Broad Residents receive two years of professional development and access to a nationwide network of education leaders. The Residency is designed for individuals with an advanced degree (e.g. master’s, juris doctorate, Ph.D.), at least four years of work experience and a successful track record of leadership and/or management.

Many school districts are the size of Fortune 500 companies. They need leaders and strong managers who understand the complex operations of a large organization—success ful professionals with experience in human resources, operations, finance, strategic planning and other critical business areas.

In school districts, Broad Residents report directly to the superintendent or a top cabinet member. In CMOs, Residents report directly to the CEO or chief operating officer. Residents are often tasked with leading major projects like opening new schools, leading budgeting processes, increasing operational efficiencies or improving human resources.

Residents earn starting annual salaries of $85,000 to $95,000 and participate in a series of professional development sessions over the course of two years.

At the conclusion of the two-year program, The Broad Residency expects that school districts and CMOs will hire Residents permanently in their current positions or promote them into more senior leadership posts.

Now in its eighth year, The Broad Residency has placed more than 173 Residents in more than 50 urban school districts and CMOs nationwide. Ninety-three percent of Broad Residency alumni still work in education and continue to positively impact student achievement as leaders in the education industry.

PREREQUISITE:

An advanced degree (e.g. master’s, juris doctorate, Ph.D.)
-Many districts and CMOs have difficulty attracting candidates with advanced degrees. These candidates are particularly desirable to districts because they are generally at a point in their careers where they have the transferable and relevant work experience and the education necessary to make an impact in central operations.
A minimum of four years of work experience*
Experience in one or more functional business areas - (e.g., finance, operations, strategy, information technology, human resources, general management)

In answer to your question - "Yes obviously most ppl can"

BUT

THIS PROGRAM IS NOT FOR "MOST PEOPLE"

I SAID, this is for those who are interested in working for our inner city schools and help improve it. THIS IS NOT FOR EVERYBODY, this is for ppl with a passion for working for kids and help contribute to the improvement of our Inner City Schools. This is like being a doctor or nurse, if you dont have the passion for the profession dont do it. You not standing in front of the class teaching - read the info on the sight before you make judgements

If you dont want to deal with the deliquents - maybe you may wanna gear towards wall street or some big corporation. This is not for ppl who dont want to deal with kids.

I have friends having Masters in Education or Elementary Education - yet they are earning peanuts. This is a great program for such ppl. You do what you love, give back to the community while working with the kids yet earning a lil bit more than you would have.

I love my life. The first thing I thought about when I read the title was Chicago schools. No mam. I would sell my soul to the devil before I do that. Aint no amount of money will have me in an environment that's so cruel.

A lot of these inner city kids don't need teachers. They need to be locked up somewhere so they can learn some home training.

I feel bad for thinking like this. But I'm afraid of bad ass grown kids.

Sorry, not that many put 6-8 years of their life into education just to chance being hit by a stray bullet like a certain 15 year old we all hope rest in peace.

FIRST OF ALL THIS PROGRAM IS FOR SMART PPL - not ones who dont read ish and just jump to conclusion just cos they see key word "Inner City Schools" and not bother to take their time to read the rest. (clearly with the bolded red, reading some of the quick comments, evident they did not even read into the actualy program, I say undeniably and surely they dont fit into that category

ESPECIALLY SINCE YOU CLEARLY HAVENT TAKEN THE TIME TO READ IT TO TRULY UNDERSTAND WHAT ITS ABOUT COS IF YOU DID YOU WILL REALISE THE PROGRAM IS NOT NECESSARILY YOU STANDING IN CLASS TEACHING ANY BAD KIDS - ITS MORE OF A MANAGERIAL AND LEADERSHIP POSITIONS FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM TO HELP STRUCTURE IT for the next generation.

They are looking for SMART folks who are ready and willing to sacrifice to help make our education system better to compete with the global world and international countries (a friend got into the program and is in Florida now, she recommended they introduce Chinese Language in our schools so that in future our kids can go global and work with the chinese - IMPORTS, EXPORTS etc) - OUR education system is so far behind compared to other countries.

I REPEAT ITS NOT FOR PPL WHO ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THIS KIND OF ENVIRONMENT. THEY WILL RATHER NOT HAVE YOU, THEY ARE PLENTY OF PPL INTERESTED AND EVEN THEY HAVE IVY LEAGUE EDUCATION (HARVARDIANS, WHARTONS, YALE ETC).

Market Analyst Recy Benjamin Dunn sat at his desk in a leading energy company office in Houston, pondering his life. He couldn’t shake that feeling that something was missing.

“I’ve been afforded a lot in my life. But I knew I had the ability to do more—to work on getting equality and access for people like me,” says Dunn.

After earning a Stanford M.B.A., Dunn explored the education industry and became a Broad Resident in the District of Columbia Public Schools. In less than two years, Dunn was able to apply his finance background to bring a host of “out of the box” creative solutions to a district that struggled to make the best use of school assets in a city where school enrollment is in decline. “Districts aren’t typically thinking of doing deals or doing property valuations,” he says. But Dunn was.

First, he secured $12 million from a local university for a $24 million modernization project. Then, he went on to broker a deal allowing a local housing authority to redevelop schools being closed by the district. The housing authority would develop new housing space, and the district would infuse the cash from the real estate sale into its own capital program to meet other critical needs.

The genius of the deal? New housing would bring in new people, who would ultimately need a new school. And the deal required the housing authority to ultimately help the district build that new school.

Dunn then put in motion another creative deal that would swap district-owned land adjacent to schools with a developer to create teacher housing conveniently located near schools. The district would market the housing to teachers, while the developer would provide new cash resources that could be pushed down into the classroom to help kids.

“Knowing I was part of a team that was going to affect children—kids who literally have ceilings falling on them or water dripping from the roof—that was what drove me,” he says.

Today, he is an advisor to the deputy superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland. “There are so many structured rules and regulations because it is a public good. It’s people’s children we are talking about. We have to be that much more creative and innovative with our solutions.”

Dunn says he often hears his corporate sector friends say how “cool and noble” his work is, something they plan on doing after they “make their millions.” “Why not now?” says Dunn. “There is so much work to be done—so much we can actually do now, while we are younger. Why stay in a job you are frustrated with?”

if i can make a difference by helping one person who in turn makes a difference thats all that matters. I plan on apply for fall of 2010 or spring 2011 after i start my family by dropping one.

I got to where i am today doing what i do now due to one persons advice. Somethin i woulda never known had i not gotten that lil information.

Thanks for the post. I'm not finished with my grad degree yet, but I totally agree. If you do what you love the money will follow. All careers aren't for all people. If more people had a passion for their career they wouldn't be so unhappy. Don't do it just for the $$. Give back, make a difference. *hops off soapbox*

I will look into that. I wonder if they do it in Houston as well. You can still make money in Education. Education and Healthcare you can still make millions. Joan Rivers used to have a show that came on Nick. it should where a man invented a learning software that is now used world wide and he made over 200 million off of it, and all the while making a difference. He worked in the Computer and finance industry, but got tired of the corp. BS. I think I may look into this program sounds cool. And one thing about education you get plenty of time off.
