The "y" replaced the vowel "e" in certain surnames a long time ago forgot why...but my French teacher pronounced it as above.
y does not always equal "ee" in French.

It's not silent in Givenchy. If it was pronoucned Jee-vonche, it would be spelt Givenche.
@BigTina...that's how you pronounce Yves St. Lauerent. The t is silent.
eta: And Diddy of ALL people, need not talk of anybody being able to afford goods they are far away fro pronouncing correctly.
