Old Leave In Shampoo?
Here's the scoop.

Back when I was in high school, I had a friend who would always leave hair conditioner in her hair (not the leave in kind). I thought she was crazy, because back then I was so into my hair and did everything the directions of a hair product said to do. I had to train my hair to grow long (long hair is not in my family), so I was always nervous about experimenting in fear of being bald headed again. But my friend had "good long hair", so I figure her hair could take more than mine.

Anyway, some years later, I always have to spray my hair with some type of leave in conditioner or oil sheen before I go to bed, that's a pet peeve of mine. Well, I was out of both and the only thing I had was shampoo, Cream of Nature, to be exact. I remembered my friend from high school and I moisten my hair with the shampoo, combed it thru for balanced, and put it in a ponytail, tied it up with a scarf and went to bed. In the morning I took out the ponytail and my hair was so soft and movable and it smelled good. That ring from the ponytail gave my hair and extra bump, instead of straight like I normally would wear it. I got a lot of compliments on my hair and I may make it my new routine. My question is: Is it safe to use shampoo as a hair dresser? I don't want it to get too soft and break off, I mean, I don't know if that would happen, just making note.

I would say no, because typically most shampoos contain suflate which when used over time dries the hair out and may lead to breakage. Why not just do a conditioner rinse (pref. one that contains no sulfates)?

I would use a regular hairdresser like Olive-Oil cream hairdress that will make your hair soft. Since shampoo is mainly made for washing I wouldn't use it as a hairdresser.

I usually use a conditioner after I shampoo, but conditioner doesn't really do anything for my hair. I never got the result I got with the shampoo, this was a spare of the moment thing.

I may try that. I grew my hair out by mixing olive oil with hair grease.

I wouldn't do that. Also what works for someone else won't necessarily work for you. And long does not mean healthy.

No, I mean instead of washing your hair, just 'wash' it with the conditioner, also called co-washing.

Creme of Nature shampoo has no sulfates. That's the beauty about this product.

As far as leaving it in, I don't advise. For one, I think after every shampoo you need to condition. And by doing what you're doing, you're not conditioning. Secondly, Creme of Nature shampoo makes the hair very soft. But I'm afraid that over time it may leave your hair too soft and lead to breakage.

Your friend was right about the conditioner thing. I've deep conditioned, rinsed out the conditioner, and added some of the same conditioner as a leave-in. Nothing is wrong with that. Most leave-ins contain the same ingredients as conditioners anyways.

Old Re: Leave In Shampoo?
should not use shampoo as a conditioner. that is what conditioner is for...get a good leave in like biolage daily leave in tonic, or design essentials (hco).....these are professional products only you can get from your stylist. technically leaving any type of "soap" in your hair will probably make your hair feel soft, but shampoo has drying qualities, which is why it should be followed by conditioner to add moisture, sheen, and hassle free wet style combing...

Your are right, I read the ingredients and no sulfates. About the conditioner, I guess that is true, I don't think anybody can 100% rinse out a product from their hair.
