I'm sad to say that I recently learned my brother is a stereotype. He wants to play professional sports and mostly dates non black women. He said black women act ghetto and wear too much weave. Then proceeded to say if he were to date a black women she would be of a non American background/culture. I was so shocked and hurt when he said all this because he is really such a sweet and kind young man and I honestly didn't know before because he keeps around a diverse set of friends (that include all types of black women as well).
The stereotype has always been so distant to me...a "them/they" thing that I barely if ever personally encountered...but now its right here in my immediate family and I don't know what to do. It's weird because he go crazy over gabby union and other fine black girls..but according to him, they are few and rare. Although he will go after a basis Becky or non black Latina in a heart beat.
Does anyone else have a stereotype in their family. I still love and adore my brother but I wish he'd change his views.
I was going to make this same thread a while back but didn't want to put my business all out there. My brother is the same exact way. I just sit and watch him & his white girl be! Nothing more I can do honestly lol
My nephews and all of their friends are this way. I'm over the whole black men not desiring black women shit tbh. My mother says just leave them to it. She seems to think that they(black men) will end playing themselves. And I could care less.
How old are these young men? It may not be too late to mentor them or find them mentors. You can still talk to them about black history, speficially the history of black self-hate and go from there.
I like taking young black teens to museums. A few years ago I took a group to see a Basquiat exhibit and it was great b/c Basquiat is so explicit at times and we ended up talking about racism and race and how people see each other. If you post their ages, maybe people can suggest things. All the best to both of you!
Just be the best you that you can and continue attracting other non stereotypical people.
That will lessen the annoyance when you encounter stereotypical people.
We all fit into some kind of stereotype, but I see where you are coming from.

I remember my my cousin said to me, "I dont like dark skinned women. They just dont do it for me". Ummm, really?? So you don't like women who are the same color as your mom? I just gave him the nucca pleaze look. And proceeded to walk away. I didn't have enuff fukks to give that day.
I have cousins who have been on welfare 20 + years.
Don't feel bad girl. I have family members who loudly/proudly proclaim that they're getting their food stamps. I'm like "...and you're proud of that?!" My brother also does not go for black women, despite being raised by a black woman (I give him a ninja please look on a regular basis)

I don't know about stereotype, but my uncle used to scrub his face in bleach (didn't work), first wife was a high yellow light skinned woman, divorced her and dated a latina, married a white woman, had a daughter by her...swears he's David Letterman or some shit. He just hates being black, I think it's hysterical!

Lol my brother is kind of wierd. He loves to make race jokes, but not in a derogative way. Like 'us ni-ggaz do this and that'. But when I ask him about which race a of women he wants to marry, he would always say 'i don't give a FUCK- a girl is a girl'. I asked him about black girls wearing weaves and he gave me a wierd look and said 'I'M A MAN WHY THE FUCK should I care about what a bitch puts on her hair' [note - i do not approve of him using the b-word against women]. He also has a thing for african american girls, lol we're black British. More brothas need to think like him.
Unfortunately my dad is uncle Tom. He doesn't hold much respect for Black people, likes to put down our achievements and amplifies our flaws. He hates Jamaican (even though he is Jamaican) and he constantly ridicules Africans (his kids are part african).
In fact me and my lil brother calls him Uncle Ruckus, a name that he happily replies to.
