And I do believe it was staged...and isn't this the supposed reason for him no longer being the host? I remember he/the other producers and the creator all got a lot of media flack about how fake the shows are...and when this "stabbing" occurred it made it worse and he got called out.
The stabbing happened about 10 years ago (in 2001 or 2002) and there was a inside edition story that said that the stabbing was staged because of the producer's vaugeness about asking the question and the fact that there's not a record of it happening.
