A baby boy has died after he was attacked by his family’s mastiff dog during his first birthday party.
A day after turning one, Jeremiah Eshew-Shahan was at his grandmother’s house in Las Vegas when he crawled over to the dog – a mastiff-rhodesian mix weighing about 120 pounds – and started to pet him.
The dog then attacked the baby, sinking his teeth into Jeremiah’s head and shaking him.
The boy’s distraught father, Chris Shahan, believes Jeremiah, who was just learning to walk, tried to grab the dog’s fur to stand up when the animal turned vicious
The boy's grandmother desperately tried to pull Jeremiah out of the mastiff’s jaw while Shahan rushed to save his son.
‘It took me about 20 seconds to run downstairs and I got the dog off of the baby. The baby’s face was torn off,’ Shahan told KSNV.com.
The baby was rushed to St. Rose Dominican Hospital-Siena Campus and then flown by helicopter to UMC's Trauma Unit, police said.
Jeremiah, who had turned one on Thursday, died from his injuries at approximately 1.45am on Saturday morning.
The six-year-old dog, named Onion, will be put down after he is quarantined for rabies.
The Mastiff had been around the baby since he was born and the family said he had never been aggressive towards people.
Shahan said the pet was a 'good dog' who had helped get his mother through her lung cancer.
Police said they are still investigating why the dog attacked the baby
SMH I bet that dog never had a day of class in obedience training. Owners of big dogs need to have their dogs in classes all the time, graduate and go to a higher class.
He should have been taught how to deal with children if not they had no business letting him near the child.
Poor baby, he didn't have a chance. Between the big ass dog and the stupid parents who didn't train the damn thing right.
A dog is a dog. You cannot train a dog to not attack a child. Even the sweetest, most harmless dogs will attack small children if they are jealous or annoyed by it. The parents are stupid yes, but for having this huge dog in the first place, or any dog for that matter around a tiny child who cannot defend itself.
I do not think the poor dog should be put down, it should be in a home where they are no small children. This is not the dog's fault, the parents should have given him away after the child was born.
Why are you letting that baby crawl around freely with a big ass dog like that roaming around the house? With ANY DOG, you have to be careful with small children, I don't care how family friendly they are!!!
wtf??? when will people learn those big ass dogs (hell most pets)should not be around babies????? the parents must deal with this choice for years to come.

I agreed with everything until this. The dog has shown it has a violent streak...and yes while all dogs are capable of lashing out many of them never will. This dog needs to be destroyed because it has shown a violent streak.
The parents/people in care of this child are dumb as hell. They think just because Rover has never bit them it's ok to leave an infant unattended with such a big dog. HUGE mistake, any responsible pet owner knows this.
I like dogs and everything but I love my child. People get so wrapped up in their pets and include them as family members that they don't understand that dogs are not people. Hell, even some people are dangerous and they can talk. You can include dogs as family members but still believe that they have a mind of their own and they don't have certain functions like humans have.
I remember one time a neighbor said her dog didn't bite. Well it sure almost bite me after I trusted what she said. I didn't go near him, I don't go near dogs if they are not a family member dogs, he got loose when she turned her back. So glad that I had my heavy gloves on when he bite my hand when I forced my hand out as I was protecting myself. You gotta be careful.

Nice post, and I agree with you; the dog has to go. With respect to the parents, these type of cases grate me so much. There are far too many of them. No lessons are being learned. Seemingly, the death of the child is not enough.
I do not care if the parents are grieving. Seems to me, some other form of punishment needs to be imposed on them- community service presentations on the dangers of dogs, volunteer work in a hospital with children who survived but were injured by dogs, fires, HIV/AIDS cases, etc. Somebody needs to pay a price for the parents' negligence and irresponsibility other than the baby.
my best friend and his wife have and raise pit bulls.....they just got custody of their two grand daughters because of some ill mess their daughter got mixed up in. Long story short I came over and the girls were rough housing with the dogs. I told my friend that he shouldnt let them girls play rough like that with the dogs(they have 2)...he swore me up and down that his dogs wouldnt do nothing to harm them......the girls are 7 and 9.People do this all the time and dont realize dogs, especially breeds that are bred to fight can and will kirk out sometimes. Anyway had been a couple months and so far so good.....I just think you taking a hell of a chance bringing a fight breed into a family situation.Mastiff's. ....jesus ,might as well had the baby playing with Presa Canario or dobermans....stupid fool.
