INGLEWOOD (KTLA) -- A student at Inglewood's Century Academy of Excellence was kicked out after her mother complained about an alleged racial slur by a teacher.
Brea Persley, 13, says her science teacher told her in front of the whole class last week to "sit your nappy-headed self down."
"When the kids started laughing, it brought back the memories of when I was in 4th grade and kids used to laugh at me and tease me," Persley told KTLA.
Teacher Kelly Dempsey called the family and apologized about the comment.
But when Brea's mother Shronda Williams requested a meeting with school principal Giselle Edman, there was no apology.
Williams said the principal told her she was "happy" the teacher made the comment and that "bad things need to happen to mean kids."
Edman then expelled the 13-year-old from the school, Williams said.
In a letter to Williams, the school said her daughter was banned "due to the fact that you scolded the principal."
Brea's family said she did get into a fight on campus and has been cited for tardiness and gum chewing.
Edman declined a request for comment.
Brea's family says it's filing a complaint with the school's accreditation agency.
In the meantime, the family is trying to figure out how to get Brea the final three weeks of school she needs before summer break.

Sounds like she was kicked out of school for behavioral problems and tardiness. Yes the comments were foul but the slant of the article is trying to make the expulsion and the remarks connect and umm no...

I'm just so confused! That teacher had no right to say such a thing to that child, very unprofessional, but there seems to be so much missing from this story!
I think the teacher was black, 'sit your nappy-headed self down', and fed up...but this doesn't excuse her unprofessional behavior.

is this a private school? they can kick you out for damn near ANYTHING!! I got expelled from private school in ninth grade cause I asked too many questions about Jesus and the bible
Re: Inglewood Student Kicked Out After Mother Complains About Slur
its not a private school but its a public charter school that has the lottery enrollment. Once they kick a student out, they can easily enroll someone else thats been on the waiting list. Their in a bad area in Inglewood but supposedly they are very good in curriculum. My mom lives near there and raves about the school based off what shes heard but that doesnt mean teachers are allowed to get away with shit. I dont put nothing past these school nowadays. I dont know about this story but Im sure theres more to it and I would sue cause that shit the teacher said was racist. Not all teachers at that school are black by the way. most are thou.

I honestly don't care if the teacher was black or white. No teacher should call a student,a nappy headed anything. And what does her being in a fight at school and tardiness have to do with this. Seems like the journalist is trying to make it seem okay that the teacher called her "nappy-headed" because she got into trouble.
The letter the mother gotten from the school said "daughter was banned "due to the fact that you scolded the principal." So I'm assuming that if the mother would have never said anything, the child would still be in the school. If a white teacher called me nappy headed, I wouldn't take it lightly and the same goes for a black teacher. Saying something about a child's features, skin color, etc should be off limits in school. IMO

Now this makes sense!!! Charters are notorious for counseling out/expelling students who are not helping their test scores, causing disruptions, not falling inline to their ideal student prototypes or helping them look good; especially after they already got that money for the year; happens in my area ALL of the time ESPECIALLY at a lot of the high publicity charters that the big wigs like Oprah and friends love

Although I am sure the teacher may have been at her wit's end with this child, this reference was completely out of line. It seems to me that she did it to belittle the student and to have the children laugh at her which in turn caused humiliation.
I went to a private school in Inglewood and chile, I am STILL traumatized to this very day by the things I experienced at the hands of teachers. Social isolation, polarization and creating derision. And this was from the damn teacher's aid. WTF!!
I remember Oprah Winfrey saying the worst thing you can do to someone is humiliate them.
Re: Inglewood Student Kicked Out After Mother Complains About Slur
I would go to the school's corporation or head quarters and file a complaint against both the teacher and principal. And no, I would've let the principal have it. Fuck that.
