LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The remains of hundreds of Los Angeles County residents whose bodies were never claimed by family or friends were buried in a mass burial Wednesday.
“This holiday season many of us are reminded how fortunate we are to be surrounded by our loved ones,” Supervisor Don Knabe said Tuesday, when he and his colleagues on the Board of Supervisors observed a moment of silence for the people being buried. “Sadly, not everyone shares this blessing.”
He said the 1,639 people designated for the mass interment at the Los Angeles County Crematory and Cemetery “are individuals that, for one reason or another, have no one but the county to provide them with a respectful and dignified burial.”
Knabe described some of the deceased as homeless or poor, many of whom with “no families to grieve for them”.
“Regardless of what their status in life was, each one of their lives matters,” he said. “It matters to us, their county family.”

Sad, sad, sad. Count your blessings if you have loved ones. It does cost to dispose of bodies so people should buy life insurance. Times are hard and families don't have the money. It cost like 7 thousand dollars to bury my Mom and then the headstone was another expense. That was 20 years ago

that is so sad, smh. i used to work for a woman whose brother had a hard life and mental illness that led to him developing a drug and alcohol problem. he became homeless in nyc, and although she and her sister would try to keep up with him, a lot of the time he couldn't be found because he didn't want to be found. anyhow, after a particularly long stretch of time and a lot of phone calls, she found out her brother had been dead for so long, that he had been buried on hart island (potter's field). my husband also has a cousin who was buried there. she was found dead in her apartment, so badly rotted they'll never know what happened to her, who did it or why (not that the police were to worried abut finding out). his grandmother took him and his other cousin (her sister) to id her, but she was sent to hart island anyway because his grandmother refused to pay for her to be transported back to nj or for a proper burial. seeing her like that and having to leave her all alone to be buried amonst strangers still haunts him to this day.

Over the last decade or so, I've seen so many requests for funds to bury family members as they could not afford to This was more so with the deceased who were under 40 years old. All I got to say is everyone should have life insurance, at least $20k. It helps a lot. If you get it while you're young, it's so cheap for just 20 or 30 years.
We always take it for granted that we're going to live for a long time; these days, many of the young are dying just as often as the old.
