Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
By KSFY Staff
Story Created: Mar 12, 2010 at 8:42 AM CST
A North Carolina middle school teacher is in the hot seat over his controversial style of teaching.
Rex Roland teaches sixth graders at Enka Middle School in Candler, N.C.
Patty Clement says her child was repeatedly bullied by Roland in class and she wants it to stop.
Clement says on a November vocabulary assignment Roland wrote the word "loser" after correcting the paper.
Just a few weeks ago, another graded assignment made its way home, and at the top of the page was the word "loser" underlined twice.
The Buncombe County School District released a statement saying that this is a personnel matter that's being looked into.
It's important to note that some parents defend Roland's teaching style saying its his way of relating to his students. None would go on camera with us.

N.C. teacher writes 'loser' on assignments
Friday, March 12, 2010
CANDLER, N.C. (KABC) -- A N.C. teacher is in hot water after writing 'loser' on a 6th grade student's assignments. He said it was his way of joking.
The girl's mother, Patty Clement, said the Enka Middle School teacher Rex Roland has done this twice now on her daughter's assignments and says it sends the wrong message.
"This is telling her 'You're a loser. You're not going to go anywhere,'" she said.
The girl was removed from Roland's class. Roland apologized, saying this was his way of joking with the students.
Some parents defended his teaching style, but Clement wants him suspended.
The school district will only say that this is a personnel matter that's being looked into.

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
I can understand using a tactic like this to motivate a high school Junior or Senior. But to use it on a student this young is stepping way over the line. Some students need tough love, but this isn't the way to go about it. I can understand the mother's anger. If this were my child, I'd be pissed too needless to say.

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
He relates to his students by acting like a fellow student, otherwise known as a bully?

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
As a teacher and adult, he knows better. He could've said that to the student if that's the type of teacher he is/that's the type of joking relationship they have.
Hell, that's much better than what I used to dream of writing on students handed in assignments....

Writes that on a 6th grader's paper? Beautiful. I wonder how funny he'd think it was if a parent came and shoved that paper down his throat?

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
LMAO. I'm sure there are plenty of teachers who feel this way about their students. My question is why is her mom so up in arms about him writing loser on her daughters paper as opposed to her being pissed about her daughter getting such poor grades. If I brought home 20% on a paper my mom would've called my ass a loser!

That would've been the case had the mother been a single black female. You know Chiniqua don't play that shit.

it says MINUS (as in subtract 20 from an original grade which is normally 100) 20%, an 80% isnt all that bad and the child is in the 6th grade. i dont care how an teacher would feel, im sure there are plenty of teachers who would want to write certain things on a child's paper and didnt do it. but its a matter of judgement, what do you expect 11 and 12 year olds to do/say if they get a paper back that looks like that??

This. Why did the student receive a 20%? That's what the mother needs to be up in arms about. Where was she when her child needed to be studying the material?

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
I'm not saying this is right, AT ALL. but in many schools, this IS how teachers joke with their students. I don't think it always goes well. I had a teacher who called us "nerds" and I actually found it annoying/humiliating and my mom told her to stop. But sometimes people do joke like that, "You're such a dork," etc etc. But I don't think it's a good ideal collectively to have that relationship with students. Each person has a different personality and you've got to be sensitive/caring to that.

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
Completely unacceptable. I don't care what age the student is. How the hell does he know what her home life is or her background? what if his "teaching style" prompted her to go home and hang herself? Humiliation and bully tactics do nothing but make students want to quit school.
It is a shame that PARENTS are actually defending this! Social services needs to investigating their household if they think calling a child a loser is an effective teaching method. WTF

Re: Teacher Writes "Loser" on Student's Paper
LMAO at people trying to clown the girl for getting 20% when she really got 80%!
This is what's wrong with a lot of these teachers today, they're trying to be cool and hip and be the kid's friend, instead of doing their damn job and TEACHING and leading and guiding. This is not an acceptable style of teaching at any level. Words have power, why would anyone think this was okay? Even at a high school level, you can still seriously damage a teenager's self-esteem with the words you use, so it wouldn't be okay at that age either. Especially in high school where kids are killing themselves over much less. This guy needs to question why he became a teacher in the first place, and he needs to attend some sensitivity training or just choose another career.
