We shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water - but there is so much that goes on and taught within the culture of what we call "church" that is not biblical. And it doesn't mean it's wrong, but a lot of it is traditions of men, and Jesus said that men's tradition make the Word of God of no effect.
This part is what will be binding to those that don't know better, this is one reason why I keep my head in the book.
For anyone who is interested in exploring the roots of our christian practices and want to know why we "do what we do" within church structure there is a book I'd recommend titled 'Pagan Christianity' written by Frank Viola and George Barna and another titled 'The Untold Story of the New Testament Church' by Frank.
However, if you're satisfied with the status quo ~ you may not want to read this, because you'll never look at "church" the same way again (and that's not a bad thing :~) )

I've been meaning to secure a on-line copy of this if I can, Is this the same Frank Viola that used to pitch for the Minnesota Twins?

Yes - he's the one. Earlier this yr I bought 'From Eternity to Here' and Reimagining Church ~ but haven't completed either one.
Right now, I'm more inclined to read Pagan Christianity and the Untold Story, because it comes from an historical position from research and that interests me ... and it was confirmed last night.
Back in 2001, when my spirit was troubled by what I was sensing in the church ... I was seeking the Lord and cried out one day , "What is going on?" I heard, "Read the Emperor's New Clothes". Never would I have thought to read a fairy tale! But, since then I've learned that many times God will use unusual things to teach us.
Just last night while reading the page before the introduction .... The last paragraph of 'The Emperor's New Clothes' is right there in print! That little fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson is very prophetic indeed. The main thing I discovered is fear of man and a man pleasing spirit will cause so many to just go along, because you're afraid that you're the only one (who sees) ... afterall, if things were really as you see it, someone else would notice - and if you speak the truth .... it might cost you your position or reputation.

lol...Frank Viola the pitcher and Frank Viola the church planter are two separate people...all 5 of his books are pretty good...Pagan Christianity will definitely make you look at traditional church in a different light...I left COGIC in January and that book is helped push me over the edge...

Black Machismo .... thanks for the correction!
Something on Frank's FB post caused me to think he was the retired ball player. I should have done my homework, before answering that question. Anyway, glad I was helpful in giving you a good laugh :-O

So True! Reading it now ... it confirms what I've questioned for so many years, but didn't ask, until a few yrs ago.

two things:
1. i'm not much of a Donnie fan, but I bear witness that his words are much needed and long over due. I do applaud his boldness with the truth of God as his foundation regarding this issue!
2. I must say thanks to you all. I've never heard of this book "Pagan Christianity" until i bounced into this thread. After reading the reviews and what you all have been saying about it, i feel compelled to purchase this book.
