That's sad, but it sounds like it was freak accident. As for the doctor being 81, as long as his mind is sharp and his hands steady, I don't see why he should have to retire. I know a few doctors who have been practicing for 30, 40, 50 years like that.
I think this is going to end up with them finding out his mind isn't so sharp anymore. These old dentists practice in a bubble, they have their own office, they don't answer to anyone unless a tragedy happens.
It's not like the medical profession, where doctors regularly have contact with their peers and hospitals overlooking some of what they do.
