why.....why why why...
it was several things.
her image wasn't trashy + she is dark skinned + in a colorist music industry.

The rule is that if you're a dark skinned black woman in hip hop, you don't get to be considered a 'xes symbol' unless you wear skimpy clothes and talk nonstop about your WAP.

those were the only dark skinned "xes symbols" i can think of in the music industry.
and what do they all have in common? Rapping about WAPS and oversexualizing themselves, constantly throwing the ass back. If you're not doing that, and you're their complexion, then....

You’re right and that depresses me.

She gives auntie vibes.

She’s more woman “sexy”, not man “sexy”.

She also doesn’t have a very xesual image, which is good tbh. Never posed for playboy, doesn’t seem all tooprovocative like lil Kim or Meg the Horse.

She had/has average looks and that's okay. She was cute in the 90s but media was very segregated back then.

Mary has been on "Aunty" status since Real Love :cry:She is attractive though and doesn't get enough praise on maintaining a nice and natural body unlike many of her peers and juniors. I think her old drug days factors into why she wasn't promoted as a xes symbol. Plus she's always been "hood" so there's that too.

Mary has never even tried to be a s3x symbol to my knowledge. That makes me want to praise her even more cause she stood on her pure talent and is still relevant after all of these years.

This is so mean and uncalled for. Brandy bothers no one. And she is not fighting that case today.

You mean sis isn't still fighting that manslaughter case?

Stanning a WHOLE convicted murderer is disgraceful. At what point do you guys decide to cross the line and say enough is enough?

PURE TALENT??????

Absolutely. Mary is a WHOLE songwriter and record producer. It takes REAL talent to craft songs that will have MILLIONS of people singing word for word at her concerts. I have experienced this.

Can Flopwood say the same? Or is it still living off Rodney Jerkins' royalties because it lacked the talent to creates its own? Why couldn't Flopwood make it past album 4 before it started flopping? Why couldn't it make it 10 years in the game before it fell off and became obsolete? Why has Mary been outselling IT since 2000?

I think it's because Mary literally looks like an aunt every Black person has.

It's not that she isn't pretty, it's just that she is kind of typical and doesn't stand out at the family barbecue.

Omg I literally came in here to type your first sentence. She just doesn't have xes appeal, and that's okay. Was she ever even marketed that way?

Also, she doesn't *look* old, but I've always thought she was old, if that makes sense lol

Y’all in here trippin nothing to see folks just mental illness

You're absolutely right. I have a research paper due at midnight and I'm involved in the real life episode of The Office where they spend the whole day arguing if Hilary Swank is hot or ugly.

I think it’s the edginess that she exudes. Sometimes, your aura will define you.

Mary also was never one to display her body for attention, which can elevate xes appeal. In the 90’s, it was just about her music and her love life was so dark. I remember when she was with KC from Jodeci, there was drama swirling around their relationship.

Just recently, she’s been showing off her body more. Because for her age, she looks great.
