People were arguing on Twitter about this. The topic of Verzuz came up and people said it should be Mya vs Ciara. I personally disagreed because they’re not peers & other said Ciara would kill her and she had too much influence/impact on the game.

If I’m being honest Tinashe, Normani(I know everyone says Bey but I just don’t see it tbh) and Victoria Monet all give me Mya tease.

& do y’all see Ciara’s influence? I’m genuinely interested in this

They are many young artist who has said they were influenced by Ciara. Mya and Ciara are from different eras and different artists.

Mya career felt so short for some reason. It’s like she came too late riding the last wave of Brandy, Monica, Usher and Aaliyah.

By the time Mya came out teen pop was exploding and there was no longer room for Mya.

If she was smart she should have done pop music completely.

You’re acting like artists especially young ones had complete control of their careers. Steve Stoute and Interscope dropped the ball on her 2nd album Fear Of Flying that could’ve shot her into that territory. Then she had label issues with her next album and then left the major label system all together

Hardly anybody listened to Mya music.

Mya flopped bigger and harder than Ciara.

Mrs.Wilson is far bigger than Mya
That’s not what I asked. I asked can you pinpoint Mya and Ciara’s influence on this current era. They both have 1 Grammy and two platinum+ albums. Mya isn’t chasing mainstream hits and hasn’t for a long time.

Victoria definitely gives me Mya tease.
This is what I’m saying. I genuinely wanted to know others stances on where they pinpoint Mya and Ciara’s influence on today’s artists. They obviously sold records and had hits but that doesn’t always translate into influence on the next generation. Like Eve & Ashanti are two examples. Eve is a top 3 female rapper to me but I don’t see or hear Eve’s influence on today’s female rappers. Ashanti at one point was KILLING it but I don’t see or hear her influence. So I was simply inquiring about others views on Mya & Ciara’s influence

What influence did she have on her own era? Only thing I could think of is jersey dresses. I don’t remember her being “influential”, she had some radio hits. Not sure if her albums have ever done well.

In a word, no...Mya wasn't even big with my generation...thats not saying she didn't have some talent...but everyone knew why she had a career and was mainstream...if Tracie Spencer had been a dancer then Mya likely would not have existed...Mya was easily replaced over and over with whoever was the cute biracial/woc singer/dancer that is hot for a second...

Ciara at least has the crunk + rnb sound as her signature...her dance style also puts her above Mya...when I think of Ciara, I think of her being her era's Janet as far as dancing...none of the girls can touch her...

For me, I always think why isn't Ciara bigger and for Mya, why did she get the opportunities she did...

Mya came out just a few months before Britney and I always felt they copied a lot from Mya to brand Britney to begin.

Tracie had the space I think Brandy/Monica did. Plus Mya was Interscope’s first R&B Pop singer so she was pretty much a guinea pig. Crunk faded out after 2007 and Ciara from the beginning didn’t want to be solely attached to that. But my question was simply where and on whom do y’all see Mya and Ciara’s influence on from this era.

Somebody pointed out the similarities between Movin On and BOMT videos which I could see especially the gym scenes however I didn’t want to feel like I was reaching lmao. But I absolutely do believe the teen pop explosion was the white answer to the black teens that were killing it at the time absolutely

In the age of Beyonce, you will be hard-pressed to see any of these girls reach for influence from anyone but her...Ciara's talent and style influence I think will be seen in future eras...Mya not so much...

But when I see Victoria and Tinashe they put me in the mind of Mya & I’ve heard both of them say she inspired them. People keep saying Normani is the “new” Beyonce but I honestly just don’t see it. She puts me more in the mind of Mya or Ciara, I just don’t get Bey from her

No, bc Mya's influence was bigger than her, Janet. And the girls from her generation came first and ended duo being bigger than her. So the other person, Aaliyah, was the soft voice dancer that everyone runs to. Sorry, but everyone doesn't have to have a huge influence to still be consider an icon or big during their time. Doesn't take away from her career or talent. And Ciara was a main girl, beyonce, ciara then rihanna, do she stood out. Mya was Brandy, Aaliyah, Monica THEN mya. But do we see influence from monica in the new generation? Do we see influence from usher from the new generation? Do we see influence from Toni braxton? Do we see the influence from ludacris do we see the influence from nelly?

I agree that a Versuz between them would not work for the same reasons.

Ciara was bigger than Mya because she had the right people in her corner and came out at the right time. Her songs/videos exploded when they came out and they’re still remembered well today.

I can’t fully speak on who they’re influencing today because I don’t pay attention to these new “artists” but I don’t think either of them are really the influencing type. Yes, every girl wanted to dance like Ciara and dress like her, however, that only lasted for a short time. I just don’t see where those 2 are like James Brown, Michael Jackson, or even Beyoncé and Aaliyah. Those artists who made a true impact on people’s lives and had several people looking at the TV in awe like, “I want to be just like them!”

The music industry is a tricky beast. One minute you are white hot, the next minute, them records ain't selling. Amerie, Elle Varner, Lina, and Vivian Green come to mind.

I don't think so. Everyone who had a hit back then wasn't peddled as a "legend" or whatever. Mya had a nice mainstream career and is still having a nice low key career. Same with Ciara.

Everyone doesn't need a Verzuz. It should have stayed between producers anyway.

I think there is but the problem is, it's just not popular or marketable anymore. Like most of the people on the Terrell show are inspired by older generational artist but no one's giving them a chance.

No one from Jive was thinking about copying Mya if anything Brandy is the blueprint for teen superstars like Britney and Christina

I don't see Mya's mainstream career was long enough to make her influential. Even the influence of her peers who were bigger is questioned on here.

I think neither had/have any influence. Not every artist are going to be influential. They both had their moments and that’s it.

Eh, not really. The closest link I personally see is Tinashe but as another font noted, both are heavily influenced by Janet. Mya's peak wasn't as high or long as other artists, but she had a respectable time in the limelight and she still does her thing as an independent artist.

They led with Best Of Me. Case of the Ex was the CLEAR lead and they rushed to put that out & that saved her album from flopping, it went #2 behind Independent Women and prolly woulda went #1 had she dropped it earlier & the album went platinum. Then Free was a great song but there were much stronger songs. They did a rerelease with this song which CLEARLY was single material. Plus Best Of Me Part 2 shoulda been on the rerelease too.

Had she dropped Case of The Ex then followed up with these two songs her sales would’ve soared.

No.
The new girls aren't channeling Mya.

Victoria Monet has channeled Mya but sadly she's more known as a writer than an artist.
Tinashe shouts out Janet and Britney as her main influences. Britney was the teen pop Janet. That influence was crystal clear despite her team pushing Madonna as her influence later on.

Yea I'm gonna have to agree here. I'm not going to look at Tinashe or Victoria dancing and performing and think Mya. I would think Janet first and foremost. Her prints are all over multiple generations of pop and R&B girls.

Agree. Mya should of taken full control of her music and image like Christina did with Stripped and went full pop.

I loved Moodring (2003). That should of been a big turning point in her career. The label dropped the ball by only releasing two singles.

Ciara have younger artist sampling her music to this day. And artist saying they were influenced by her.
