Exactly, it was ALWAYS Prince, Michael, and Madonna..

I am from the UK and Kylie has always been a huge star here since the 80s.

She's sold millions of records here and in her home country Australia.

She never really made it huge in the USA though.

Bryan Adams is one of the best selling artists of all time and has hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and a lot of streams but I don't see him being mentioned often in the press these days.

But I guess he is older now and keeps to himself.

Shania Twain is up there. That woman dominated a whole era in her genre. She is the Queen of country. Even MTV was playing her videos (and you know well that channel wasn't into that kind of music). She is one of the best-selling female artists. Such an ICON.

To be honest I think a lot of these artists are older now so therefore no longer releasing new music.

It does not mean they are forgotten or irrelevant.

They made their impact and have millions of fans around the world who still listen to their music.

Nobody's career lasts forever.

Their huge album sales did all the talking anyway (in the case of Shania Twain for example) and they still have hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and get plenty of streams.

Brandy. She was THE teen queen in the 90s, the vocal Bible and an acclaimed actress, then in the early 00s it’s like she just dropped off the face of the earth in terms of level of fame. She’s enjoyed some resurgence in acting with Star a few years back as well as Moesha on Netflix now, but I never see her music really referenced and remembered like that when you couldn’t escape her sound in the 90s.

Boyz 2 Men is another one. Platinum records and immense talent for days but no one talks about them these days. I hear more people talking about Jodeci when it comes to iconic male r&b groups than B2M.

Shania didn't even made the crossover like Taylor Sniff and still everyone knew who she was. MTV was playing her all over the place.

Taylor is a talented woman and was in her way to become mainstream. But the Kanye West scandal gave her a push too. I wonder how she feels about him today.

I don't care for Taylor.

I definitely agree. Boyz II Men were super huge. They dominated for years in R&B and still NOBODY mention them today.

At least I've seen Brandy making apparitions in TV shows. Not too long ago she had a play in Broadway (I think).

Ricky Martin. See why people stay in the closet? Soon as he came out it was over.
Robbie Williams.
Sade.
Ricky Martin was done several years before getting out of the closet. So no, that definitely didn't affect him at all. On the contrary, he became a bit more relevant. Got a play in Broadway and participated in The Voice Australia. Before he made news the general public forgot about Ricky Martin. He peaked for only 1 year in the USA and then quickly disappeared. The dude was almost a one hit wonder.

The first person to pop in my mind is Jody Watley. She was pretty famous when I was a kid, but I never hear anyone mention her now.

I mentioned Donna Summer because throughout the 80s. Her career was dying fast. Her album's flopped badly thanks to Geffen like The Wanderer, Cat Without Claws, All Systems Go and even her last album (she wasn't with Geffen records then) but Another Place and Time wasn't a success. 4 unsuccessful albums.

Becoming a born again and making religious references throughout her songs or talking about religion during her concerts caused a huge lost with her gay audience (her core fans) and then we have the whole rumour regarding her comments about gays which I won't get into.

Donna rejected a lot of songs that could have been hits for her e.g. She was suppose to do a duet with Lionel Richie (who was a huge star then) called (I've Had) The Time Of My Life but rejected it.

Looking back at it now. She should have stuck with her plan originally and retired in the early 80s which is what she wanted to do. Her career in the 80s was awful.

Unless you were in high school like I was during her prime from 75-79 when she was a big name then you'd remember but I don't expect those who were born let's say 1973, 1974 or later to remember her unless their parents told them.

That's why I mentioned her for those who might get confused.

Great topic overall OP

Can someone define "NOBODY mention them today"? B2M is always discussed as a standard bearer for 90s R&B groups.... someone just made a funny thread yesterday about them/their music.... they appeared on an episode of "Songland" last year.... they sung on the 2019 Soul Train Awards to honor Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.... they were featured on the 2020 Soul Train Awards Pass the Mic... and they continue to perform... if I am not mistaken, they opened a couple shows for Bruno Mars in 2018... no, they aren't selling 2-3 million records but they are still remembered and appreciated for what they contribute....

I feel like the late 80s/early 90s is a fairly forgotten period in music. Barely referenced, and barely streamed compared to prior and later eras.

Debbie Gibson, Tiffany, and New Kids are forgotten relatively. When it comes to Teen Pop, they usually refer to the 90s, and sometimes even the 70s over the late 80s.

Jody Watley, Karyn White, Pebbles, and Vanessa Williams fall under this too.

Freddie Jackson. When I learned how many R&B #1s and top tens he had, I was shocked. He doesn’t really have much of a legacy that’s discussed.

One major factor in people being “forgotten” in that sense is whether or not people liked their personality, or just their songs. Did they have any major pop culture moments? Also, do younger artists cite them as an influence, or copy them? If not, they usually fade.

It was just my impression. Thanks for clarifying.

Who else besides Gloria was suddenly forgotten?

I feel like MC Hammer is in that group. He was the first mainstream rapper and his main hit was huge globally speaking. I still remember being a kid in my country and knowing about him and Can't Touch This. They were commercials inspired by this song. Movies even got inspired by it too. I was a little kid back then and remember it.
People forget he dropped like two dis records against the king of pop. That’s how big he was, he thought that was a good idea and millions of people agreed.

Unfortunately for Hammer, MJ won by killing him with kindness and ignoring him.

Wow what a hater. Why would he do that? Michael was a sweet person. Hammer wasn't even around when the pedophile accussations came out I think (or at least wasn't as hot compared to when Can't Touch This topped the chart).

Lady Gaga. I've seriously haven't heard sh!t from her since her, ARTPOP , Album...!!! , Along with, Christina Aguilera since her , Lotus , Album TOO , 100% PERIODDDDD
Her music career suffered after Artpop but she managed to pull it together by getting into acting. She earned 2 Golden Globes and an Oscar a few years ago. Also, she just won a Grammy this year for Rain On Me but honestly the only reason why is because of Ariana.

He claimed to be the ‘real heir’ to James Browns legacy and wanted to prove it. He had someone play MJ in one of his videos and then challenged MJ to a dance-off.

This is where the generational and racial divide is more at play. Black music was heavily segregated until the late 90s/early 00s, so there were superstars like Freddie Jackson who racked up #1s on the R&B/Black Singles/Soul chart and mainstream/white audiences would be ??? But ever since the rise of streaming, folks don't hear Black music that's popular with just Black people anymore, so of course artists like Freddie Jackson aren't talked about. It's crazy considering that when they come out to perform at festivals, they sell out the shows.

I was in Nigeria when Come On Over was released, and radio stations played some of her songs despite preferring hip-hop, that's how popular she was back then. And of course there was those Revlon commercials. After her next album she discovered her husband was cheating on her with her best friend; after their divorce she married her best friend's husband. Oh, and she had problems with her singing voice too, and now sounds very different.

Why? Gloria and her husband Emilio are filthy rich. What about the ones who were also once on top and now live in poverty.
Gloria has a great legacy she is will always be considered as an icon, especially when talking about influential Latin artistes.

Cory Daye (Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band) special shout out to Kid Creole too

I recently found out about them. I was rewatching boyz in.the hood and heard their song in the background. Apparently they were big in.the late 70s early 80s. They really had a unique sound and great songwriting too.

Lionel Richie was basically forgotten until American Idol. When you think of it though very few acts are able to remain relevant for more than a decade.

Truly! Much respect to John Singleton for solidifying this great band's legacy and introducing them to future generations by featuring them in the soundtrack of his classic film! Their music evokes a certain joie de vivre and nostalgia that harkens back to the days of yesteryear. So inspired by the incredible talent and musicianship of this ensemble. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

New here lol but I see y'all mentioned Jodeci and I'd say they don't get mentioned enough especially with the impact they had on RnB as a whole. DeVante Swing himself wrote and produced most of their hits by himself and people don't even acknowledge that fact. I see a lot of people say him and Dalvin were just eye candy but they actually had a big role (especially DeVante). People also don't know that he's the person that discovered Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Ginuwine, and a few others too. But, back to the topic I don't think they are mentioned or celebrated enough as a whole.

I'm a 90s baby and I adore Donna Summer! Then again I'm gay so that probably has something to do with it lol

I'm curious to know your opinion on that matter because I can tell you're a big fan and probably have more knowledge about it than most. Do you believe she really did make those comments? I know she vehemently denied it for the rest of her life and claimed the writer of the article was angry at her because she'd become a Christian.
