Think about the women she considers icons, Sarah Vaughn, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald. These are Black women who were touring and acting during Jim Crow segregation. Older Black people have this tension with struggle. They find struggle noble. Those who persevere through struggle are given high acclaim.

The younger artists, though they do have struggles are the descendants of the pathways that women Dionne considers icons created for them. Which is why she likes Mary J. Blige. Again, a woman who has triumphed over domestic violence, addiction, and the other routine violence that Black women experience like misogyny, white supremacy, et. al. to make a name for herself as a singer and actor.

I love her music but many people only know Dionne as a purveyor of shade. So I hope she uses her interviews to discuss more of her music.

Ive noticed this also, and with younger black people, too. I believe that part of the reason Mary is so beloved by some women is because of that struggle. it’s familiar for a lot of black women.

Brandy hasn't had a truly successful album since Never Say Never.

She is no one's icon, considering she barely made it past album #2.
Says who though??? Brandy came at a time when Black teen artists were really rising and having great success. I have yet to see an era as like during the 1990s where you had the likes of Brandy, Tevin Campbell, Monica, Aaliyah, Usher, in naming several, to having the type of success on both the R&B/Soul and Pop charts. Each of those artists mentioned are every much still played, heard, and even relevant with the younger generation today.

You guys are in here attacking the legendary Dionne Warwick over her opinion but can't say exactly what it is that makes Phoni and Brandy icons.

Dionne has more collateral than this whole entire site combined, squared, times 150. I'll take her word over yours any day. And I been saying this on this site.

Phoni Braxton is NOT iconic. Brandy is NOT iconic.
Whether Toni is considered an icon to some, or not with many, she does remain as any and/or all of respected opinions. However, what can never be denied is Braxton's impressive presence on the music scene back during the 1990s. Her first two albums were staples in their own right, that in which helped to define both an era and a genre that was long in having to take a backseat.

All of them are icons. Dionne should know better. She tried to clean it up on Twitter recently.

Imo, she most certainly is. Blige defined a time and era. When she debuted onto the music scene, there was nothing out to sound like Blige, or any other solo woman artist to even look like her. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of What's The 411?. That album remains a signature landmark. Blige has even been nominated to be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. To me, if that isn't ICON status, then I actually don't know what else what.

Dion is certainly entitled to her opinion and earned the right to voice it on the next generation. I’m not saying I agree with her, but I do think we throw around the word icon and legend too loosely. These artists need to more than have hits on the radio to be label one imo. Which of these ladies broke barriers?

She said “F Ariana Grande”.I’m not a Ari fan and she has a right to her opinions but she could be more graceful in her delivery. She also said she wasn’t doing no collaborations with “Heifers”.
Chaka seemed so hateful and high in that interview.

Knowing Aretha she would agree with Dionne. Most of Dionne’s peers feel the same way. It’s ridiculous to think otherwise.

It’s ironic to see these responses. When hive said some of the same stuff we were insecure and a disgusting group of people. Now the tune is different that it is your protected favorites.

Hive stay clockin who people truly are but y’all can never see the truth until it’s someone other than Beyoncé.
I know this thread is old but I just had to quote this for emphasis. It was all “big bad hive” in that thread.

Woah, Dionne had an amazing voice. But just bc these legends SAY these singers aren't iconic doesn't mean that their opinion means anything. Bc if that's the case, they will believe that legends end with them and their class and that's it. And that's totally unfair

The kids with a lack of knowledge are always trying to come for Dionne’s vocals but the truth of the matter is many of the singers listed wouldn’t be able to sing Dionne’s most difficult songs as they were written. Dionne’s musical ear and control was nothing to play with.

She was the first pop star. Her voice got better with age, peaking in the 80s. I wish I knew the song that inspired Whitney's vocals for one of her ballads.

yeah we not going to say this was an average singer

I'm far from a kid and without any context besides the way you write, and knowing the avg age demos of visitors to this site, definitely much older than you and this is not insult or slight to you dear, but fact. I'm old enough to remember her career and her public persona eras and reception.

You can do the education from searching classic alley archived threads about beefs between Dionne Warwick and other legendary divas/industry heads and singers. She was never miss popularity like that and was not ever seen as a stronger vocalist than Aretha. To even suggest she was ever a stronger vocalist than Mariah is ludicrous because of Mimis vocal abilities in her prime with the whistle tones, octave range and I could go on, I'm not even a Lamb, but this is understood in the industry. Dionne was know for having a pleasant, mild elevator muzak friendly voice that was appealing to white audiences and she relished this and used it to her advantage, in a time when much more radical things were going on.

Dionne was lambasted and ridiculed two decades ago for being the paid celeb sponsor/face of the totally exorbitant rate charging Psychic Friends Network hotline - which she widely promoted.

She went through a very odd phase during her bankruptcy/financial struggle period where she would appear in public mean mugging fans and paparazzi for absolutely no good reason, cigarette in hand, disheveled, unkempt, or just looking crazy and behaving rudely to people and became unliked, and was soft blackballed for her attitude and behavior. A humble gracious diva, she was not. She also was known for getting physical and aggressive with people.

Her newfound resurgence in popularity via social media was timed out til now so when new generation would not be aware of her past faux paux, controversial comments and behaviors.

You know her new, now social media persona as run by her neice and team. A funny, witty DW. A curated digital image of this person. Those who remember along with Pepperidge Farm, know.

There's more, I could go on but I'm not here to drag here I'm just doing my part to prevent revisionist history.

She was never the top girl standalone on vocals, and never a popularity queen and we can just accept facts. She had talent, unique looks, great songs, and legend qualifying accomplishments, and that'll do.

I say nothing here that tarnishes her star, only public knowledge. I am happy for her recent online/public resurgence and image overhaul, I just happen to know why it was neccessary to begin with. She had to wait til certain people she rubbed wrong were dead and gone!

Who said that? I said she was not the top vocal girl ever and that's correct.

I see her neice and team has unnecessarily sent the cleaners in, I'll exit bc the bs done started *laughs

Aretha would WHAT????!!!! Hell no, she felt Dionne was a liar and beneath her in terms of talent. She also disliked Wendy Williams for a period for playing in her face about this beef and her commentary on it. That's why the infamous Wendy vs Aretha interview exists where she put Wendy in check once and for all.

Oh nah yall not gon sit here and lie on the dead, that's devilish as hell!

Don't make me start tagging fonts from old Aretha vs Dionne threads, fall back!
I was there in Catfish, Cornbread, and Collards Alley honey!

Aretha went to her grave disgusted with Dionne’s messy antics. Dionne lied on her and was a foul sh!t starter, don't come for the queen of soul ever in your life baby!

How the Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick feud began

First off Aretha had made similar statements about the young divas so yeah she would agree.

As far as talent goes Aretha and Dionne had great respect for each other as artists but definitely saw each other as competition. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter who you or I thinks sings better they both had 50 plus year careers so….

You gon read them attachments I posted or not because this is not a matter of opinion, the woman wrote a long form document to the press about it and I'm not gon post it for you bc you too lazy to read it. You got your snippets let it go and move on and stop being determined to be loud and wrong. Aretha did not like this woman.

With Aretha you know she changed her mood with the day. One day she would like you and next she would be a b!tch to you and then act like nothing happened depending on if she was jealous of you that day. In her 98 autobiography, “Aretha: From These Roots” (which I own) she goes on for pages about her friendship with Dionne. Aretha and Dionne had a complicated friendship.

I'll let you debate about that one.
