DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) — One day after his shooting death, the mother of 11-year-old De'Evan McFall is speaking out.

"Me having to witness it and be there...I'm never gonna get over it," Vashunte Settles said.

Her son was gunned down at the Signature at Southern Oaks apartment complex in East Oak Cliff after a fight between two girls escalated, police said.

Settles said her daughter was fighting with a 14-year-old girl, who pulled out a gun and shot it; However, the bullet missed her and struck her brother instead.

Police said the teen suspect ran into a nearby complex, where she was later found by police and taken into custody. She has since been charged with murder and is being held at the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center.

"He was so innocent. He definitely didn't deserve it," she said. "I just wish the younger generation would stop and think before they do irrational things, because in this situation, I'm not the only one hurting."

Settles said her whole family is devastated.

"I never get to see his big pretty smile," said his grandmother, Lois Williams.

They are now pleading with the community to stop the violence.

"No more violence," said family spokesman Dr. R Chambers. "We need the world to know that there is a better way. We don't have to resort to violence."

Following his death, Settles wants the world to know how much joy her son brought to their lives.

"He was a very talented young man, he had a great future ahead of him," she said. "He had basketball teams, football teams...they all reached out and wanted to work with him because he was very naturally talented."

She's hoping her tragic loss will serve as a lesson for others.

"Take this story and do something productive with it. Let my son not have died in vain and let this save somebody else's child," Settles said.

DeSoto ISD—where McFall attended school—said they will be providing counselors for anyone in need of assistance with processing his passing.

At this time, details about the fight and how the 14-year-old suspect got the gun remain unknown.

So sorry for the loss of his young precious life. Shame to the mother who was allowing and watching her daughter fight in the first place.

A 14-year-old girl has been charged with murder after she fatally shot an 11-year-old boy in Dallas on Sunday while aiming at another child she had been fighting with, authorities said.

The teen, whose name has not been released, was fighting with another girl at the Signature at Southern Oaks Apartments when she grabbed a gun and shot in the opposing teen’s direction, but hit an 11-year-old bystander instead, the Dallas police said.

The teenage suspect fled after the Sunday afternoon shooting, but was soon taken into custody.

The 11-year-old, who was identified by family as De’Evan McFall, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died from his injuries.

De’Evan’s mother, Vashunte Settles, as well as other members of his family, gathered on Monday outside the apartment complex where he was fatally shot to make an emotional plea for the community to stop the violence, KENS5reported.

“I don’t want nobody else to have to feel like this. I don’t. Protect your babies at all cost. You can’t get them back. I will never see my son again,” Settles said through tears during Monday’s news conference.

The boy’s grandmother, Lois Williams, also called on those listening to do their part to prevent gun violence.

“Please, people! Stop killing each other! I never thought I would be standing here doing this for one of my babies,” Williams said.

The young boy’s family said they knew the girl who has been accused of killing him, and that their families are close because they grew up together. Other neighbors told the outlet that fights among young people often take place on the property.

Police have not said whether the juveniles involved lived in the apartment complex.

Police have not shared where the weapon came from. The teenage girl is being held at the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center.

The investigation is ongoing, Dallas police said.

Another young black female with no positive female guidance in the home. It's the trash mother figures in the home that are making all these black girls crazy like this. They're teaching them to solve problems with violence and fighting and turning them into straight psychopaths. RIP to this young boy, his life was tragically cut short. Let me send this story to Cynthia G... @Gil @dreams2020

Why didn’t she try to stop the fight from the beginning? She failed her kids. This poor kid is dead now. May he rest peacefully. Very sad situation

Can she be charged with something? I have a feeling she was involved in escalating that fight and should be liable for the outcome.

So mom is preaching to stop the violence yet had no issue watching her daughter and another girl fight until sh!t escalated further and got real. Make it make sense.

I would not be surprised if she was out there hyping them on. So very sad for a little boy who lost his life as a bystander. Now the mother and sister have to live with this.

Why didn't she stop the violence when she was watching her daughter fight? Oh well, that's the thing about fights, they can turn deadly in an instant. RIP to the boy that's all I got for this story.

In another thread, they said that the families of the two girls are long time friends. So I wouldn't be surprised.

Honestly maybe she was okay with her daughter getting into fights but didn't expect the consequences to hit her son instead. If she knows the murderer's family that well, she should not be shocked at all that the other 14 year old girl brought a gun.

Thats what I don't understand, all these people that like to crowd around to see hell even rush up close to film fights. Never know when someone is going to panic and start shooting, possibly hitting an innocent person.

His mother saw her daughter fighting, watched everything escalate but now wants to be an activist after her son is hurt. This makes no sense at all. I’m sick to my stomach. Did this mother not value her daughter? She knew she could have also been hurt but I guess she didn’t care.

That girl will never be the same.

She's grown enough to pull out gun and try to shoot the girl she was fighting, if she's grown enough to be walking around with a loaded gun, if she's grown enough to murder an 11-year-old and then run away like a punk... then she's grown enough to be named. No need for the law to protect her. She wanted to be grown with a grown gun and grown shooting, then she can be grown with the consequences.

My condolences to the little one who didn't even get a chance in life. Eleven. That's too young.

Smh at the mom sitting her behind there watching them fight. As an adult she should’ve de-escalated the situation. I’m so tired of hearing story after story involving kids and guns.

These kids were not siblings. How did you take that from this story? The 14 year old was fighting another girl and tried to shoot at her but had poor aim and shot De'Evan instead. He was an innocent bystander and was not related to the shooter.

What is going on with these teens and their fight to the death attitude? Teen girls are getting just as bad as the boys. They're throwing punches at grown men, even policemen. Now they're grabbing guns and shooting at people.

I'm scared for the future.

The girl the shooter was fighting was the victim's big sister who is known to beat ppl up they were all oustide with friends and she started fighting, the shooter got beat up ran home and got a gun and came back out and just shot at the crowd killing D. He and his sister were students of my mom at school. Sad situation she’ll get maybe 2 years because she's a child

PUBLIC NOTICE!
When you see people fighting leave the area immediately or go in your house because in so many of these situations bullets start flying and the innocent get hit!

Sometimes these male podcasters have a point when they say Black mothers are the reason for a lot of black boys and girls growing up complete trash. They’re trash themselves and encourage or ignore the behavior. Black mother are the present parent and many of them are doing a sh!t job.

The fact that the mom was standing there may give the teen who shot the boy a self defense plea.

I doubt the little boy and the mother were standing there silently.

Jeering on the fight can lead one to believe they have hopes to jump in.

If the shooter was meeting up to fight a fellow teen and might’ve felt she could be jumped, she had the right to defend herself.

Only people who should be charged are the 14 year olds parents because she had access to a gun and the mother goading a fight in between children.

If police can arrest people for dog fights, there has to be a law somewhere about what that mother did.

If the shooter was going to meet up to fight and felt she could possibly be jumped, she could have easily chosen to not go. She arrived at the scene with a firearm in her possession with the intent to fight/shoot someone. Nothing about that is "self-defense."

It’s in another report. The mom admitted she watched the girls fight, one of them was her daughter and she saw her baby get taken away.

As usual, women just standing around cheering on physical violence between women, instead of doing the mature thing and breaking it up. Just like what happened with Shanquella Robinson. Now this woman's child is dead. Hope watching the fight was worth it.

These are the same mothers who tell their kids “If you don’t beat their ass I’m gonna beat yours” over the most trivial bµllsh!t that an adult should be able to resolve. Rest in peace to that baby smh

The lack of a decent father is also why the girls are growing up trash.
