VOTERS ARE “SWEET” ON QUEEN SUGAR

Second-year drama from executive producer Ava DuVernay scores 14 nominations
Atlanta paces the comedy categories with 10 nods; Donald Glover receives six nominations

(Washington, DC, June 14, 2018) One year after coming up short to the popular NBC drama, This Is Us, voters embraced the second season of the critically-acclaimed OWN drama, Queen Sugar to the tune of a record-breaking 14 Black Reel Awards for Television nominations.

The show which follows the Bordelon clan surged to record heights largely on the strength of several intriguing storylines that captivated viewers and weekly left them on the edge of their seats. In addition to scoring Outstanding Drama Series, for the second year in a row, Queen Sugar received multiple nominations for nearly its entire ensemble including Outstanding Actress, Drama nods for both Dawn Lyen-Gardner and last year’s winner Rutina Wesley, Outstanding Actor, Drama for Kofi Siriboe, Outstanding Supporting Actor, Drama nods for Dondre Whitfield and Omar J. Dorsey, and Outstanding Supporting Actress, Drama nomination for Bianca Lawson.

DuVernay’s all-female cast of directors and writers also were acknowledged for their groundbreaking work picking up nominations for Cheryl Dunye (Outstanding Directing, Drama Series) for her episode, “Fruit of the Flower;” Ava DuVernay and Monica Macer & Davita Scarlett for “Dream Variations” and “Heritage,” respectively. Queen Sugar also scored several nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor, Drama Series for Alimi Ballard and Roger Guenveur Smith, while Michael Michele secured a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress, Drama Series. The momentum even extended to the music as music supervisor, Liza Richardson took home the series final nod for Outstanding Music (Comedy, Drama, Limited Series.

While the things were getting hot and steamy in the Bayou, it wasn’t the only part of the south that enjoyed runaway success. Donald Glover’s sophomore season netted the multi-talented hyphenate 10 nominations showing that last year’s Outstanding Comedy Series still remains potent among the BRATs Voting Academy. Atlanta‘s “Robbin Season” stole the thunder from its contemporaries securing Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Actor, Comedy for Glover, nods for Zazie Beetz (Outstanding Supporting Actress, Comedy) and • LaKeith Stanfield (Outstanding Supporting Actor, Comedy). Only Brian Tyree Henry found himself on the outside looking in.

In addition, Atlanta secured several nods behind the camera, largely for its creative inspiration, Glover scoring Outstanding Directing, Comedy Series nods for both F.U.B.U. and awe-inspiring episode, Teddy Perkins. Katt Williams also received a nomination Outstanding Guest Actor, Comedy Series nomination as the Alligator Man. Finally, music supervisors Fam Udeorji & Jen Malone also were acknowledged in the Outstanding Music (Comedy, Drama, Limited Series) category, as well.

Continuing the theme of record-setting achievements, Glover enjoyed the most dominant single year since Jamie Foxx’s breakthrough 2004 campaign. Glover received six nominations for his aforementioned work in Atlanta and served as the host and musical guest for the most entertaining and talked-about episode of Saturday Night Live, scoring an Outstanding Guest Actor, Comedy Series nod for his work.

While voters were sweet on Queen Sugar and welcoming to Atlanta, they weren’t the only shows to enjoy mass appeal. Last year’s Outstanding Comedy Series winner, Black-ish and HBO’s comedy juggernaut, Insecure also received nine nominations apiece showing that both shows remain formidable threats. Also receiving strong consideration is the Netflix limited series, Seven Secondsand last year’s Outstanding Drama Series winner, This Is Us which scored seven nominations apiece.

Kudos also to several shows which scored five nominations apiece, including the superhero drama, Black Lightning, the acclaimed technology anthology, Black Mirror, the winning urban drama, The Chi, and the celebrity whodunnit “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.” Plus, there were several performers enjoyed strong years, each scoring three nominations apiece, including Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson and Laurence Fishburne, This Is Us’ Sterling K. Brown and Insecure’s Issa Rae.

The Black Reel Awards for Television winners will be announced on Thursday, August 3, 2018.
