The following was taken from a thread about a KKK member becoming Muslim. I felt it deserved its own thread due the prevelance of these types of opinions, thoughts, beliefs about Islam as a religion of extremists. As a Muslim, I feel that my beliefs and way of life of my people are being percieved more and more as a threat in the west. Much of this is due to misunderstandings, misconceptions, media-hype, and some from reality. The only way to combat this is to have dialogue so I welcome any comments and definitely any questions about the matter.

Yes, going from a KKK member to a Muslim is a very extreme change. However, being a Muslim is not. Of course depending on who you talk to and what you are exposed to, Islam may seem that way. Islam is complete submission to God, so to a non-religious person, it could appear to be extreme. Keep in mind that if Christians followed their religion in the manner it was practiced in the past, it would seem extreme by today's standards as well. Example. The depiction of Jesus's mother Mary, although not an actual depiction of him or her, is an accurate depiction of how she would have been clothed. She is dressed similar to how Muslim women dress today, how most faithful women dressed at that time. But the idea of covering one's entire body and hair for many Christians and non-Muslims seems very EXTREME and unecessary. Muslims have and try to practice Islam in the same way in which it was taught thousands of years ago. The idea is that GOOD never stops being Good and Evil never stops being Evil. We as humans especially us in the West, have altered those ideas in order to suit what we call "modern times". I think we need to be more aware of this because the moral fabric of all of our faiths stands to be lost if we keep trading it in for these modern ideals.
Now about that being stoned to death.............................. ...................................

I honestly don't know many "real" Muslims. In college I knew several guys who claimed to be Nation of Islam but it seemed to me that they just wanted to belong to something and had no real conviction.

I try my hardest to not judge other religions too harshly...but I must admit that my perception of Islam isn't too favorable. My biggest gripe with them is the way they perceive and treat women.

I understand and respect your views on why women need to be covered...but I just think it's archaic and unnecessary. Especially since I don't see the same requirements of the men. I have friends who have dated Muslim men and personally, I just wouldn't want to be bothered with their views that seem "stifling".

I realize that you guys want to stay true to the original foundation/beliefs of your religion...but while I don't believe in completely submitting to "worldly" views and norms...I do believe that you have to be somewhat progressive. If everything in life was done the same exact way as a thousand years ago, as black people, we would be in a really BAD WAY!

So in that regard, I just don't get it...

You feel that Muslims are being persecuted and I feel like Christians
are being persecuted. We must walk on egg shells while the world
walks all over us.

A woman covering her body is archaic, and uneccessary to you, but to me a woman showing her behind to everyone is backwards, disrespectful, unprogressive, and foolish. I think we need to evaluate whether our belifs are based on our desires to fit in and be popular or is it based on right or wrong. Sure it seems "modern" and even "powerful" for women to go to work with short skirts and high heels, but i know women who cover from head to toe and are doctors , attorneys, police officers, homeowners, and dont get xesually harassed on their walk to work. Dont buy into the hype. This present culture is a vacuum and it will suck you in if you dont think for yourself. Do you want to be a body or do you want to be a person who is respected and not judged by your outer looks or not? How long did it take for women in the US to gain equal rights under the law, how many more years is it going to take for women in the US to get out of the mental prison? I love to cover myself, it empowers me because I know what I wear is not being spoon fed to me by an industry that constantly changes and sucks up alot of unecessary energy and money. A woman in hijab,( Covering) is the most beautiful sight there is. dont be fooled by the pics and media of the women in burkahs in afghanistan, many women there wore it before the Taliban, and wear it still. So many stereotypes. As far as black ppl, if ppl practiced their religion the way they are supposed to, black ppl would have not been or continue to be oppressed. So much for being modern.
As far as christians being persecuted. I know of some, but not on a large scale. feel free to share.

are you male or female? i assumed you were male.

look, i don't understand why there is one extreme or the other. just because i don't think a woman should be covered from head to toe doesn't mean i promote a woman showing her ass and tits every chance she gets! i'm not down for that at all.

and if you t hink that a woman being xesually harassed or raped is the result of the way she's dressed...you're sadly mistaken. believe me, i've been out where i was dressed very conservatively and respectfully and STILL had men oggle me and say inappropriate things. when you blame a woman being harassed or raped on what she wears or how she presents herself, you're basically relieving the man who committed the act, of all guilt and responsibility. i've been xesually harassed at work and it wasn't because of how i was dressed or how i carried myself.

it just angers me how men are so quick to talk about how a woman should carry herself or act or this and that and meanwhile, they do damn near whatever they want. how many muslim men are virgins before getting married?

and not to be funny or disrespectful but i would imagine it's hot as hell under that covering. i would get an asthma attack!

I don't have issues with women being covered. My sil is a Muslim
from East Africa so I am somewhat informed.

.Extremist are out preaching hate and signing up for suicide missions. Obviously I'm against that. I don't know how many extremist would frequent LSA so I'm guessing
you are not that. It's just wrong, but the Muslim
religion on a whole I find to be interesting and peaceful.

I'm a Muslim woman. I've been Muslim practically all my life. I do not wear hijab (headcovering), except when I go to Jumah prayer.

The most common question I get from non-Muslims is "Why don't you cover your hair?" and my answer to that is "Because I don't want to". The Quran says that BOTH MEN AND WOMEN should cover their modesty, and that's what I do. Right now, Allah has moved me to cover my hair, so I don't. But I also don't walk around practically naked.

As for the comments about women's rights, Islam is extremely pro-women. In Islam, women can own property, can divorce their husbands, and their husbands cannot take additional wives unless she says it ok. In marriage, a man and woman create a contract that both parties must abide by in the marriage, and the woman can put whatever she wants in the contract, including things such as no additional wives, how many nights you cook dinner, working outside the home, etc. If the husband does not abide by the contract, then that's grounds for divorce. That's just the beginning of the rights that Islam gave women, which previous religions did not give them.

It may seem that women are oppressed under Islam, but think about what you're seeing. You're seeing images presented to you by a media that wants you to believe that anyone who isn't conservative, Christian and White (or wants to be White) is evil and must be stopped. I will say that there are people who do not practice Islam correctly, and they will have to answer for their behavior on their Judgement Day.

i respect that. honestly, at the end of the day i don't care what anyone practices. as long as it doesn't hurt/affect me. i just say i would never marry a muslim man under no circumstances. the girl's i've known that dated them...the guys were controlling as hell. they wouldn't let them wear lipstick or perfume because of the ingredients and stuff like that. i would freak out.

Then why is it in Saudia Arabia women can't drive? Why can't
they go out for exercise without a male escort and if they do they are harassed
by the clerics? Why must women doctors treat ONLY women in the women
wing of hospitals? Why must... I could go on but you catch my drift. Islam
in't as modern as you make out.

Once again (I'll make it big so you can see it)
I will say that there are people who do not practice Islam correctly, and they will have to answer for their behavior on their Judgement Day.

Islam is a beautiful religion. But humans are NOT PERFECT, and as such, not everyone will follow the religion correctly. And they will have to answer for the way they practiced Islam on their Judgement Day.

Men who are possessive and jealous will be that way regardless of the religion that they follow (or claim to follow). There are many Muslim men who are not that way, I can attest to that. The key is to not let the behavior of a few dictate your opinion of the entire group.

As far as modesty in Islam, yes both sexes are required to be modest. However women are required as it states in the Quran to draw their veils over their bosom, not men. Making it more visible. (lets assume we all can figure out why) Both are told to lower their gaze and guard their modesty when around the opposite xes.

As far as women being blamed for rape, NO. I would never blame a woman for being raped no matter what. BUT we cannot continue to deny that we as women somtimes do contribute to our own pitfalls when it comes to how we are treated by men. We can't pretend that wearing revealing, sexy clothes does not draw negative attention, thats why we tell our daughters not to dress this way, because it does. Why do women dress up and get sexy for the world and walk around their husbands in the home with sweats and curlers. Men do not respect that whether they like it or not. If you dont see that this is as backwards as it gets i dont know what to tell you. I guess this could be a lesson in perception.

Islam being considered modern is not important. Innovation in Islam is considered a deviation.

As far as Saudi Arabia goes, i'm not sure why Women can't drive. I can only assume that its because women there are for the most part covered from head to toe. I can say that in other middle eastern majority Muslim countries, women can drive and choose not to because many have chauffers. Although my mother who moved from the US to Dubai chooses to drives to and from work and covers everything but her eyes. For the most part the hospitals are seperated, doctors, etc, but I can assure you that this is in no way a bad thing. Most women here would love to be able to see female doctors exclusively, esp the gyno. The necessity of being around the opposite xes besides your hubbie and family is really not necessary unless you need to be and it cuts down on a whole lot of mess.
