Puerto Rico voted for statehood three times in a row in a referendum run by their legislature.

AOC proposes a constitutional convention that would circumvent the referendum in PR and leave it up to congress (who has never voted for PR to become a state, and will not even confirm DC).

Because letting PRs vote on their own future is neoliberalism.

And then makes some weird argument about Puerto Rico's senate being run by Republicans....unaware they have three separate parties and different idealogical leanings in PR.

Maybe the least effective legislator in the House shouldn't assume the responsibility of writing a bill that will impact 4 million people.

Especially while being so blatantly unaware of the actually legislative history of the commonwealth.

She is not wrong. The liberals or "left" in PR do not want statehood they actually want to be their own country or remain a territory because they literally believe PR is a COLONY of America.

PR voted for statehood, very narrowly and it was a low turnout election of like 20% where the Left basically boycotted it because the right was corrupt.

PR politics are more complex in that social conservatives dominate their politics, there is intense voter suppression but even the right wing puerto ricans are economic leftist. To many Liberal Puerto Ricans who want socially Liberal policy, they'd see 2 Puerto Rican senators as a OBSTACLE to national liberal policy.

I'll give you a practical example, if PR gets 2 senators, they will both vote against any judge who is not pro-life. Which would eliminate most Liberal judges from being appointed. PR should not be a state.

The reason they are debt is because of the US and American corporations.
So yes, the US should pay their debt, cause they are the reason PR is in the sh!t it is in.
Then give Haiti back all the money the US stole from them to become independent.

Puerto Rican statehood would depopulate that island. By adding in a another layer of government taxation, this state would have the same income as Mexico. 65 percent lower than Mississippi's. Those people's income can not sustain 3 layers of government. Remember 48 states entered the union when there was no federal income tax.

yeah the US could literally just forgive it lmao. They’re the reason PR is in debt. And those forced tax cuts for pharmaceutical companies don’t help.

the US hired McKinsey and paid them millions to deal with PRs debt. Instead of just paying the debt directly.
