So to keep this short I’m going out of town on the 20th for the week and been trying to save up. Even though technically I’m going to hang with family and my birthday is the day before Thanksgiving so not really spending anything, I still have bills when I get back. So I’ve been working 12 hour days the last week and plan on doing it until pretty much the 19th. I’m commission based and pulling in close to $400 a day which I’m ecstatic about.

However, my dad called out how it’s unhealthy to do and how he burnt out doing it.

Am I being that unrealistic/unhealthy?

I loved working 3 12 hour shifts. I did it so long, I truly struggled with the 5 8 hour shifts. Ion wanna see these Bamas 5 days a week.

It depends what type of job you do, does it involve standing or sitting in a certain position for long periods? Does your shift end late until the evening, are you eating right whilst you are at work?

I work in network marketing so work from home and sitting down 90% of the time. My shifts usually end by 6 but been pushing it to 10pm. Eating is questionable because frankly I forget.

I actually like what I do because I get left alone so it’s not that big of a deal. However listening to my dad talk who was a accountant I’m going to be burnt out and decrepit from it. I don’t plan on doing it long long term, just live in LA and rather not come back to scramble figuring out rent due to a short check.

Your dad is sharing his experience but your experience may be different. No biggie.

It's probably less healthy over an extended period of time but I don't see the big deal for just a few weeks. If you start feeling burnt out, then you'll learn your limit.

It’s only for a limited amount of time. The 19th is 10 days away, so you’ll be fine.
Just try to get enough sleep as you can in the meantime. Eat well. And meditate before and after your shift to decompress. You’ll be aight.

As overtime it might be a bit much, but you sound young so you should be okay.

Just make sure you get enough rest and you are eating well.

It should be ok, but try and eat properly and keep hydrated because in those 12hrs your body will be depleted of nutrients. I respect your hussle, get that money!

depends on what your doing, the fµck?

12 hours working retail or cleaning toilets will be more tiring than sitting on fatass spamming social media pages.

youre really baffled why working more hours is more tiring or stressful than working less hours? Because youre doing it for longer

Yes, I aged rapidly after doing if for just a year. To be fair I also had paper thin walls and illegal neighbors who didn't take their kids to school.

edit
never mind I thought this said overnight shifts. Overtime is ok as long as it isn't back to back to back.

If you’re not tired, then what does it matter what your dad is saying? You’re only doing it for the short term. I did 12 hour shifts and absolutely hated it, but I was also on my feet for the entire day and my back was aching. If you’re working from home and enjoying it, get that coin!

What's your end game? Are you significantly paying off debt? After this how will it keep you from scrambling for the rent?

Heck ya! I ain't built for that life!! I've done away with 8 hour shift 5 days a week. that sh!t is exhausting and too much time. I like building a job around my life not the otherway around!!!

With the pandemic, many folks have caught on and are doing this and demanding it from employers!!!

Don't agree to 12-hour shifts. Even if you wanted to work for 12 hours, you could work 8 hours for one employer, and 4 for another just to diversify your income.

You are not a doctor or nurse, and lives are not at state.

I would listen to your dad. If you are capable of doing so much overtime, you can find a higher paying job where that won't be required.

I was working 18 hour shifts, just a few peak days of the year, and that would really break me down mentally each time. The overtime wasn't worth it.

Working longer hours temporarily with a short term goal in mind isn't a bad thing. Just don't make this a long term thing because it will mess with your physical and mental well-being.
