I feel terrible that my main goal in life right now is to make a lot of money.

I don't want to just settle for middle class. I want to be making upwards of 150k a year. I want to have a nice house and a nice car.

But then I stop and think to myself... "wow I'm so f'n shallow." Motivated by material possessions.

Luke 12:22-34
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?d 26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin;e yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! 29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. 30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, strive for hisf kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

I just keep going back and forth between wanting a nice life for myself and being able to afford nice things, and feeling bad for wanting these things and being motivated by these things in the first place...

Not at all. But I think it’s important to ask yourself why you want it? Wanting a nice house & car is the normal answer but what’s driving that? Just food for thought. Personally speaking I believe the beauty of having a lot of $$$ is that it brings the ability to be free in this 3-d world. God said for the love of money is the root of all evil. The key is to have balance so that your drive for money doesn’t override love for yourself and others. I have big goals like you tho and black people deserve to live a comfortable lifestyle idc how unrealistic it may be to others. Minimum 500k year within 10 years is the goal. You got this!!

God also wants us to be good stewards of the resources we are given. Once I started being intentional with my money and properly managing it, my net worth increased tremendously. I have a degree and I expect my pay to be at a certain level. I do not feel bad about that at all. I drive a nice car (paid off) and I live in a nice house. I don't feel bad about that either! I am not hustling 24/7 chasing money, nor am I engaging in unscrupulous acts for money. I invest, I budget and I live my life.

Just relax about it. Find a career that pays you well, invest, help others and live your life.

OP instead of asking if you are a sh!tty person if you are motivated by money -- ask your self these questions.
Why is it WE are always told to not desire wealth? Why are we always told the root of all evil is $. Why are we are always encouraged to be poor and be happy to receive crumbs and just barely scrape by every month while not saving or investing. When we do strive to have more, we are criticized and chastised for it (especially BW). When we do get a little change our family gets mad at us while at the same time expecting us to freely give our $ to them. Why?

Why-- because it's part of the narrative to try to oppress and keep us from prospering.

Go make that $ and don't feel one ounce of guilt behind it.

Only if it’s at the expense of other people.

Motivated by money?

More like motivated by what money can give you and there is no shame in that.

When you’re young no, but at a certain point in life you have to realize there’s more to life than money

No. I think motivation for why you want money is the biggest factor here.

I don't want to have money because I want material things or to simply flex--I see it as a means to an end. Life is so short and tomorrow isn't promised. At some point, I don't want to work and just want to be able to relax and pursue my hobbies in peace. We weren't put on this Earth just so that corporations could have us enriching them with our labor at 77.

I get criticized or defensive remarks whenever I tell people I am not motivated by money and largely don't care all that much about it, so whatever people say most of them are going to be aligned with your views.

150k is not a lot or enough to lend to accusations of being greedy at all, though.

Money is the byproduct of good service or strategy. Being motivated by an end result neglects the process which got to the end result. Motivation should be aimed at the process IMO.

Idc what people say I am money motivated. Now do I use and abuse people and try to take advantage of them to earn my money? No so why should I care? Plus money = more ability to be generous, change someone’s life and change your children and grandchildren’s future. The mindset you have is what kills some black people like poverty gives you grace

My only issue is with higher paid jobs this usually comes with more demanding work and I don't want that..
