Megalophobia refers to the panic and/or fear over large objects, particularly statues. When I see giant statues mimicking a person or people for example, I become tense, anxious, and fearful. The thought of a human-like object being so large, looming, and intimidating freaks me the hell out.

Here are a few statues that I would more than likely faint over if I ever came in contact with them up close and personal:

The Statue of Liberty (New York)
The Motherland Calls (Russia)
The Bather by Oliver Voss (Germany)
Forever Marilyn (Chicago)
Christ The Redeemer (Brazil)

Eek!

I thought of this immediately:

I'm not scared of most statues, but this one being so realistic looking, really huge, in the water and in a very un "statue like" pose which makes it seem more real- freaks me out.

Yes I do...

And I walk in the field with just the sky above my head I am scared of the immensity above my head and under my feet.

Once we visited a power station with a turbine and I fainted...

huge human-realistic statues are kinda freaky; probably the uncanniness of them.

but large structures in general, no. i love going the city and looking up up up at these impossibly tall buildings.

going in them is another matter now...... but that's a different fear! (acrophobia)

There are these giant, outdoor blowup rat figures that unions use when they are on strike that have me shook :dead: I can be near tall statues/figures, but if they look realistic (especially with the colored paint schemes), just roll me into my eternal slumber :dead:

For the past 2 years, I've watched a float of a huge black dragon with yellow eyes and claws appear during the TV airing of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade--That sh!t would fµck my whole holiday up if I saw that coming down the parade route :dead: I can only imagine what the kids must be psychologically going through when it appears. I hope that demon balloon isn't around when I have children and they become old enough to ask if I can take them to the parade.

My mom has this fear. And I do to an extent. I get just a little uneasy around tall buildings. And large life-like statues creep me the hell out. The one in the 3rd post is a no-go for me.

I get a little creeped out by " Jesus " statues because of that scene in The Omen III where they showed " God " looking at Damien.

One of you really had to post that picture of The Bather, huh? Then another one of you had to repost it? I can't come back in my own thread! I almost had to check myself into the damn hospital after seeing that big wicked b!tch in the water!

I've had this phobia since I was 8. It goes back to a girl telling me about this commercial in which the Statue of Liberty is alive and walking. She emphasized how scary it was. Seeing the human form so tall is terrifying. I live in Chicago and there's this big gold statue by Jackson park and lakeshore drive that scares me. I did a project on it and it didn't help. The statue is the secret reason I don't want to drive cause my mom was gonna take me on lakeshore drive to learn.
I've had nightmares that the statue peeks in my window and wakes me up, or I'm riding in a car and it just appears. I've had these nightmares for years.

I'm not alone. I will never be able to go to Italy. The pics alone puts a dreadful fear through me. They are monstrosities. The statues that look like regular sized people posed in parks or city streets really scare me.

Im more scared of small alive things like newborns and midgets and sh!t, but I would be REALLY uneasy around this statue, especially at night. My mind is way to active.

I feel uneasy around them but I'm not sure I'd call it a phobia. Then there are bridges, I don't like bridges.

No but thanks for this post because you've awakened a love i did not know existed. Is there such a thing as megalophilia cos the thought of these giant statues excites me. I now have a handy short bucket list from your examples.
The thought of them coming alive and being under my control has been one of my fantasies since childhood. I would love for one to put me in its hand or on its shoulder and destroy the world with me. It would also be fun to explore the world with one cos their giant steps will get you to places faster.
I love giant structures in general and hope to design and oversee the fruition of many. Standing on top of them is another story though but I bet I wouldn't be scared of heights if I owned or was friends with giants.

The bather one is genuinely creepy though for me because I'm scared of large bodies of water; based on the belief that there are giant creatures lurking in them

The vast majority of large statues in this world are of Buddha

I looked it up one day I was bored.

I used to think the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil was huge, but it isn't compared to some of the Buddhas I've seen

I think it's the feeling of being so insignificant and small in comparison to the structure. I remember a long time ago I took my cousin and her kids to see the Statue of Liberty and I felt like the Statue was going to fall over and kill me! Whales do that to me too. There's an illustration on the Blue Whale wikipedia page showing how small a human looks next to one and it started to freak me out.

Big inanimate objects that are blown out of proportion (like life size teddy bears, world's largest ball of yarn, etc) are the type of things that make me very, very uncomfortable. It doesn't scare me it just freaks me out and I think it's creepy and want to avoid it at all costs.

See, I want to just run around screaming when I see this kind of mess. There needs to be a "trigger" warning on this thread, real talk.

Can't stand huge statues! This is reminding me of when I went to the Statue of Liberty. And OMG, when you go inside and see that big-ass bronze face. I wanted to vomit and had to close my eyes as I passed. I don't know why they think folks would want to see that sh!t.

The images in this thread make me SO uncomfortable. I had to scooch way down in my seat to type this and I'm gonna be legit afraid to stand up and leave the room for the next few minutes. But I don't like big things in general, though, or thinking about how big the planets are. I HATE looking at photos of Earth from space.

I used to think I had Megalophobia but I've found that large statues, buildings, or ships don't really frighten me. As long as it's out there in open space, I'm okay. What I really have is Megalohydrothalassophobia, which is (from what I understand) a fear of the unknown and large sea creatures (fictional or real). Like those documentaries about colossal squids destroy me. I can't watch it and I don't want to see pictures of them. The worst part is when they pan to those gigantic eyeballs, it makes me feel all wrong inside when I see them.

Large buildings or large submerged ships that you can see right beneath the surface of water creep me out. Someone posted a thread about the world's largest pools and it actually had buildings in it. I wanted to run screaming from that thread. I won't go near an aquarium now and the idea of deep sea diving and using a submarine to go to unknown depths scares the hell out of me.
