I feel so bad for Gloria Estefan. She was a global star in her time and considered one of the divas in American music (along with Celine Dion, Mariah and some others). Still now people barely mention her. It's like she disappeared and never came back.

Gloria and MSM came out at a time music around the globe was extremely competitive (the 80s). They didn't sound like anybody else AT ALL and still made it HUGE.

Gloria and her husband are in fact the reason why Miami is the music's capital of Latin America nowadays.

Who else besides Gloria was suddenly forgotten?

I feel like MC Hammer is in that group. He was the first mainstream rapper and his main hit was huge globally speaking. I still remember being a kid in my country and knowing about him and Can't Touch This. They were commercials inspired by this song. Movies even got inspired by it too. I was a little kid back then and remember it.

gloria estefan couldn't hit the right note with a grenade, cannonball or air strike. she's lucky anyone ever knew her name.

Gloria refocused her attention on the Spanish market.

But yeah, I do agree that she has nearly been forgotten about in the English market. I loved her music in the '80s with the MSM and her solo stuff in the early '90s.

Akon... his music used to be everywhere in the mid 2000’s. I couldn’t stand his music, so I’m glad that’s over.

T-Pain too.

Who is talking about talent? She was huge and that's what I'm talking about here. You sound like I even care about that woman. MSM was a band btw. They made good music.

Good choice. People who weren't alive in the '80s and early '90s would never know that her career once rivaled Janet and Madonna's. Paula had a brief but very impressive run. She had six No. 1 hits in just three years and two No. 1 albums.
Paula rivaled Janet but not Madonna. Madonna was in a different league. I still know what you're trying to say. She got a few number ones in a short period and was huge in the USA.

I disagree. Paula's "Forever Your Girl" actually outsold Madonna's "Like a Prayer" in 1989. Granted, Madonna was four albums into her career at that point and had taken on a more artistic direction, but still. Paula was in the same league with both Janet and Madonna for a brief time.

who's talking about talent? me. i've made no presumption about your feelings about this woman. i know that the miami sound machine is a band, but that has nothing to do with my stated opinion about estefan. she was the lead singer. they were a second thought.

paula didn't rival janet or madonna. but she did have a good run of her own. on second thought, paula rivaled both janet and madonna in being viewed as a singer who couldn't sing.

I like the duet she did with NSYNC on the Music of the Heart album. Was that song her most recent hit? Music of the Heart came out in 1999.

Madonna was global which Paula wasn't. Janet wasn't as global neither. You still have a point.

No, I'm not Estefan stan. But there's a couple of hits I like from her. Rythmn Is Gonna Get You is a classic.

Paula wasn't seen as artistic as Janet and Madonna, but she, Janet, and Madonna were the three most successful female singers in the Dance/Pop category in the late '80s and early '90s. Furthermore, all three women, while not great vocalists, could put on a helluva show.

I wasn't talking about globally. I was just talking about in America. Madonna's main rival outside of the U.S. was Kylie Minogue who had very limited success in America.

I come from a foreign country. I didn't even know who was Kylie Minogue until the early 2000s. Madonna's rival was Michael Jackson. They were regarded as the kings of Pop.

Cory Daye (Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band) special shout out to Kid Creole too

I absolutely agree. She had that lovely, star quality and the vocals to match it. I’m a millennial with an old soul and I’ve always loved her voice. I listen to Sunshower almost every day.

LoL. You love to misinterpret everything I say. Obviously, Michael was Madonna's male counterpart hence, like you said, both of them being referred to as royalty of Pop. I was talking about Madonna's main female rival outside of the U.S. Kylie was the closet person to a rival Madonna had in the U.K. and Australia. That's why the two women were often compared throughout their careers.

I think the comparisons started in the 2000s. Both were making similar music. I mean the same type of pop. Madonna was living in the UK.

I would say Donna Summer is up there. After the 70s. Her career took a huge nosedive and she doesn't really get acknowledged as much ever since because of disco, since the genre was hated with a passion.

May I just say, you have excellent taste, a true thoroughbred! And ditto. I'm a millennial/old soul and I was raised on the classics. I loved their whole aesthetic and always felt as though they were ahead of their time with this concept, even with their vintage-retro style and never truly got their flowers.

And Sunshowers stays on regular rotation on my playlist! :arrogant

That was until like the late 80s when Prince was left behind though. True Blue (1986) was what made Madonna global. At the time Prince wasn't as international.
