2021 Golden Awards

Written By: LATimes

"According to preliminary Nielsen data, the program averaged 5.4 million viewers. The figure is likely to go up when West Coast viewing and out-of-home viewing numbers are added on Tuesday. But the final tally will fall dramatically under the previous low of 14.9 million viewers in 2009, the year after the ceremony was canceled due to the writers’ strike."

These people still don't get the fact that many of us aren't in the mood to watch celebrities prance on a red carpet and haven't been in a year.

Hollywood is dying.

The magic is gone:
  • We know that half the celebs who were once exciting to watch are functional drug addicts or predators enabled by bigger predator producers and directors
  • People have access to myriad types of content, so why would they want to watch a bunch of self-aggrandizing hypocrites?
  • On the strength of what happened to Brendan Fraser and the fact that there are very few Black HFPA members, this is exactly what HFPA deserves
Golden Globes 2021: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler call out the HFPA's lack of Black members in divisive opening

I didn't watch it. I read the thread though.I just wanted to see my girl Viola Davis win which she didn't . I was mad for all of 5 seconds then went on about my life. I think people now realize that the win isn't about the film nor television show but it is really about lobbying.

I think I may skip awards season altogether this year. My heart’s not in it this time around. If there’s any important highlights I’ll catch up on YouTube.

Of course its low. Theaters are barely open and people aren't all that excited about movies. Plus, who wants to watch a bunch of zoom screens on TV? The shows were getting boring before COVID and with everyone practicing social distancing, there is really nothing to look forward to. Not even the celebs are excited.

Even if there was a movie I was really excited about it, it wouldn't make sense to sit through a long award show for those awards (when they might not win) and I can catch the highlights that suit my interest.

Awards shows have been garbage for many years but NOBODY wants to watch a zoom awards show. That is incredibly tedious and boring. Also the Globes are fun and looser. Folks be drunk and all. You cannot capture that on zoom. At least music awards show can cut in multiple performances. These acting award shows on zoom are horrible. We dont want it. Come up with something else .

The only award show I sort of liked was the MTV music awards and sometimes the BET awards and ONLY because they were a place where you could hear new songs.

Honestly, I'm not all that in touch with the newer movies/shows. I was looking at the lineup and I didn't know half these people lol. the only people I was familiar with were John Boyega and Daniel Kaluuya. As you can imagine, I was very happy with their wins lol.

People just don't care about traditional celebrities or award shows anymore.

The ratings have been dropping every year. I think a big part of it is viewers got sick and tired of hearing these wealthy yt’s going on about politics. They memorize a damn script and recite it, why the heck should anyone listen to them on who to vote for?? Especially when some of these actors bitching about who was in office were drug addicts and abusers.

Someone in the watch thread said the ceremony was dry and ghetto. Very few award shows have adjusted to the virtual set up.

But yeah, folks were already reaching that breaking point with award shows but COVID has sped up the inevitable. People aren’t infatuated with new age celebrities enough to tune in and watch a 5 hour long ceremony. We also don’t have as many groundbreaking talents as we did in the past, nowadays, they are few and far between. Also, the introduction to social media killed award shows in general. Many catch brief clips of the fashions on IG or Youtube and keep it pushing.

Award shows do not garner the same excitement and entertainment like in the past, plus so much of Hollywood has been exposed for the smoke and mirrors it is and all of the messy politics behind the scenes being the driving factor behind who receives awards rather than talent itself. The glamor and mystique of Hollywood and celebrities are gradually fading with time. All of this has played a part into why things are shaping up to looking the way they do. It will only get worse as time progresses, each year being severely worse than the last.

All award shows are going down in ratings. They are becoming a bit archaic. The Grammys will probably be horrible, especially since they pushed it back two months and most of the nominated stuff is going to be two years old this year.

Someone said that the Oscars should be cancelled and money that would have gone to the show should be donated to different charities. I think that's a wonderful idea and would generate a lot of goodwill for next year.

A lot of celebs are idiots, weirdos or predators. A lot of people finally saw that last year. Hope all these awards shows tank and something new comes out of it.

Hollywood did it to themselves with all the snubbing and giving awards to the same people/shows over and over again. Why even watch when you already know who's going to win. It's even more boring now that we're in a pandemic and they don't even try and change up the host it's always the same boring unfunny white people.

First of all....who wants to watch these things on Zoom anyway?

I used to love the Golden Globes the best because they seemed to be the most laid back. Celebrities would sit there and get drunk at their tables and act up or make funny speeches. Now.....yawn!

The Golden Globes Ratings Were a Disaster of Epic Proportions

With few stars and even fewer blockbuster nominees, America pretty much ignored Sunday night’s Golden Globes broadcast. Per Nielsen, an not-so-nice average audience of just 6.9 million watched Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the bicoastal proceedings on NBC, barely one-third the size of 2020’s viewership (18.3 million) and by far the least-watched ceremony in modern Globes history. The demo ratings were even worse, with the three-hour Zoomathon notching a 1.5 rating with adults under 50, a 68 percent decline from a year ago (4.7). While award-show ratings have taken a beating during COVID, no major event has collapsed so quickly or on a scale similar to Sunday’s swan dive. And, yes, CBS and ABC probably have good reason to be nervous about the prospects for the upcoming Grammy and Oscar telecasts.

There simply is no sugarcoating how awful these numbers are. While the Globes did manage to outdraw last fall’s pandemic Emmys, it wasn’t by much: TV’s top honors drew just 6.1 million viewers on ABC last September, also a record low for that show. But the Emmys fell a much more modest 11 percent from its pre-COVID audience, and in most recent years, the Globes have delivered anywhere from two to three times as many viewers as the Emmys. What’s more, while the Emmys rotate among the four major networks, NBC pays a massive premium for Globes exclusivity. In 2018, Variety reported the Peacock agreed to pay $60 million per year for the Globes as part of a long-term licensing deal; by contrast, most reports have pegged the fee networks pay for the Emmys at closer to $10 million per year.

In fairness to the Globes and NBC, the decline for last year’s Emmys was on the small side in part because that show has been suffering much more consistent audience erosion during the age of Netflix, leaving it with not much more room to decline. Performance-based music awards have taken much bigger hits in recent months, with audiences shrinking between one-third to one-half vs. past years. But the Globes collapse was much more spectacular and painful, in part because NBC invested so much in promoting the show and because it marked the return of Peacock vets Fey and Poehler as hosts. The network and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided to invest the resources in the telecast even though all signs pointed to a likely Nielsen disaster: COVID meant a slew of film nominees people either had never heard of or which never played in theaters, as well as the inability for stars to mix and mingle inside a ballroom. Then on top of that, the week before the Globes ceremony was dominated by fallout from a Los Angeles Times investigation which renewed questions about the legitimacy of the awards and revealed a lack of diversity among the show’s voting body.

As for Sunday’s ratings, the previous record low audience for a Globes telecast came in 2009, when the show drew 14.9 million viewers. That low-water mark came a year after the HFPA was forced to cancel its usual ballroom ceremony because of the 2008 Hollywood writers strike. It held a news conference instead, with CNN, E! and TV Guide network joining NBC in reporting the winners live. NBC’s special that night drew 6 million viewers, while it is likely the three cable networks combined to attract at least one million viewers. In any event, when measuring how this year’s Globes did vs. past ceremonies, 2008 doesn’t count since it wasn’t an actual ceremony. But even if it did, it is likely more people watched the winners revealed that year than tuned in to the show this year.

Why did I read this as Golden Girls? LOL

Anyway, there really wasn't a need for this thing to be televised to begin with, I have no idea what kind of numbers they were thinking they would pull...

Nobody wants to watch that boring ass sh!t anymore. I can’t name anyone in their 20s who is interested. Hell, I’m almost forty and am uninterested. There is never much excitement happening during the Emmy’s, but because of the panorama we didn’t even get red carpet walks and interviews.

The Oscars will follow the same path.;);)

The problem with these awards shows is the double whammy of Generations Y & Z tuning out.
And millennials/tik-tok generation not tuning in.

(Same with magazine sales.)

NBC should have cancelled them this year. I don’t know how they thought stars sitting in their living rooms dressed up would make an entertaining show.
