Today's photo was taken at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. Tommie Smith, the gold medallist in the 200-meter race, and John Carlos, the bronze medallist, gave the black power salute as an anti-racial protest as they stood on the podium with Australian silver medallist Peter Norman. Smith and Carlos were told to leave the Olympic village after the incident, which many viewed as a Black Power salute. The pair were ridiculed by Olympic officials and by the mainstream press, but their protest and its image have become iconic symbols of black struggle.

This photo always gave me absolute LIFE !!! Too bad most black athletes & entertainers are either house ninjas, too vain/narcissistic & glib (out of touch) to ever make a statement like this. They're too afraid of not being excepted by whites. Miami heat Trayvon martin tribute was the last once I saw.

The guy on the side did not look too happy about that.
What a beautiful thing, to be black and proud of it.

This 1936 photograph—featuring eight of the nine Scottsboro Boys with NAACP representatives Juanita Jackson Mitchell, Laura Kellum, and Dr. Ernest W. Taggart—was taken inside the prison where the Scottsboro Boys were being held. Falsely accused of raping two white women aboard a freight train in 1931, the nine African American teenagers were tried in Scottsboro, Alabama, in what became a sensational case attracting national attention. Eight of the defendants were found guilty and sentenced to death; the trial of the ninth ended in a mistrial. These verdicts were widely condemned at the time. Before the young men eventually won their freedom, they would endure many years in prison and face numerous retrials and hearings. The ninth member of the group, Roy Wright, refused to pose for this portrait on account of his frustration with the slow pace of their legal battle. (Source: Smithsonian)

And how right she is, even so many years later. Nothing has changed, has it?

Mississippi John Hurt left behind a legacy unique in the annals of the blues, and not just in terms of music. A humble, hard-working man who never sought fame or fortune from his music, and who conducted his life in an honest and honorable manner, he also avoided the troubles that afflicted the lives of many of his more tragic fellow musicians. He was a pure musician, playing for himself and the smallest possible number of listeners, developing his guitar technique and singing style to please nobody but himself; and he suddenly found himself with a huge following, precisely because of his unique style.

I have been obsessed with everything Nina Simone lately. Although I am from one of the latest generations, I have a strong appreciation for her music, as many of her songs just move my soul! She was truly a gem during her time, and for the civil rights movement. She had a very troubled life.. I hope her soul is at rest.
