I'm going to Vietnam for New Years! Do you recommend Ho Chi Minn City over Hanoi? I also wanna do Ninh Binh, have you been there? How's the food?

Love this thread. Have you met a lot of other expats?

I have actually ran into a few when I attend events pertaining to business related stuff. They seem to be either Russians, Chinese, Japanese, Asians from Singapore, wyte old americans, or wyte young Europeans.

Im sure you will have tons of fun. Both cities seem very different from each other. Hanoi has a smaller feel to it (Think Charlotte or Raleigh, or Nashville in terms of size) They have night life but i don't think its comparable to Ho Chi Minh City aka Saigon . Also this time of year Hanoi is cooler, it felt like low 50s or high 40s when I went up that way 2 weeks ago . You will need a light jacket. Ho Chi Minh , its warm and no coat is needed. I have been going out in tshirts and light summer tops during the day.

Im in Ho Chi Minh City at the moment, This place is huge and there is tons of stuff to do around here and see. I am starting to see new years celebration posters up everywhere. So you should have no problem finding a rooftop bar or hotel to chill in to bring in the new years night somewhere. Im pretty sure alot of folks will be in the city center city in the park strip area by that Ho Chi Minh Statue probably bringing in the new year for free there too as well.

After new years eve, A local told me alot of things are closed and they spend time with family on news years day and play hand made board games and eat tons of food.

Make sure you install grab app. It is better option than taxi's . Cost of them is anywhere from 70c to $2.00 USD depending on where you go. This is a must app to install for Asia pretty much. You can get on a moped /motorcycle or take the car option.

The food is really good. There is all types of food to choose from so no worries there.

Install google translate to use offline and download the their language option. This way it will make it easy for you to communicate with those who cant speak much english. Its very helpful.

Also , I have not been to Ninh Binh. I saw some day tours online for that while I was in Hanoi for pretty cheap but ended up not doing it. The scenery from the pics online looks pretty cool. It looks like it would be an all day thing.

Do they have alligators in Vietnam?

The place has swamp area and is jungle so Im pretty sure they do in some parts of Vietnam. I can only imagine what is in some of the rivers when you go way out in the middle of no where into the countryside of vietnam

It is amazing that you have great experiences in Vietnam. Where I live, there is a large Vietnamese population and I have never had a good experience with them. They are racist as hell. It completely turned me off to Asia.

What did you end up doing?

I ended up going to Nha Trang an 7 hour train ride up from Saigon for New yrs before I left to that country

I spent most of my time in Ninh Binh just relaxing and enjoying the scenery. I was not a fan of Hanoi and didn't spend much time there. Hoi An was nice too.

Looks fun, OP!

I was getting a pedicure at a nail salon and the owner had an old Vietnamese man in there I think it was her grandfather. Anyways, he started talking to me just casual conversation and he shared with me that the ENTIRE country shut down when MLK was assassinated. So, I don't think they are prejudice against African Americans. My uncle also told me that during the Vietnam war they would give the AA soldier's look out calls
Awesome
