I have many questions.

Why the magic number?

Is the short pixie style the one it does?

Is this what Nene has?

Any other details you may have.

This is a serious post, the whole concept confuses the hell out of me. I am fake hair illiterate :(

I always wondered about the '27 piece' too. I mean, do folks use 27 tracks to create the hairstyle?

the 27 piece weave when referenced is usually the NeNe style. You can search on You Tube 27 piece weave and you will come up with bunches of videos explaining the technique start to finish.

The magic number comes from the guy who invented it, he created a technique where you can make a full closure weave with exactly 27 pcs everytime. It's still known as the 27 pc even though most stylists end up using more pcs than the original technique called for. It's hair glued on a stocking cap/molded down hair and it creates a short pixie style w/o the client having to cut her natutal hair

All the hoodbunnies love that damn style. I find it ugly and hate when they have one side chin length and the other side ear length. Or the mohawk

Thanks!

Also, are the pieces of hair glued onto the cap long and then cut short, or are they already short?

I keep picturing a pool cap and a knit stocking cap. I know this has got to be wrong, though.

It depends, you can buy pre cut hair from the BSS or if you're really good at cutting you can buy longer hair and cut it into the style yourself. BSS sell the really short pre cut hair that goes along the nape of the neck and sides so that you really don't have to do much cutting with clippers or scissors since most girls aren't good at cutting the back of their heads (unless you're me :pwink:).

It's usually a weaving cap bought from the BSS. A simple stocking cap to protect your real hair from the glue on top. Some girls even go so far as to sew the 27 pc style in, that's their prerogative though.

The style was created so that stylists can have a quick, easy way to do the style every time with the same 27 pc method. The pieces are laid on the cap in a circular pattern and a closure is created at the very top of the head, near the swirl. More modern versions of the style can be done with invisible parts. They're really easy to do so that's why you see a lot of girls doing it on youtube.

wouldnt that look funny at the top?

Not if you know how to make a good weave closure. You can do a full closure or invisible part. Some girls opt to leave a little natural hair out.

Not every one of these styles are ratchet, I've seen some pretty natural ones. I did a pretty jet black natural one on my mama one time, she took it out after a day because she couldn't stand not being able to scratch her own scalp lol

That sh!t is fugly........

I don't know shortyBASTARD, the one above looks pretty nice from the back. I am by no means a weave fan (you can find many posts right here with me giving them the side eye), but I do agree with what CANK STOOCHIE said below.

Thanks for explaining this, I was also curious.
I see these a lot in (certain parts of) Houston.

i think the 27 piece hair already comes with a closure that you just glue on the top, you dont have to make it.
I made one of these before that looked like this [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRGQ7wxNUz4]27 pcs Again! - YouTube[/ame]

The amount of ingenuity put into not having to wear your own hair is amazing. Now imagine if this same energy was expended on something that actually progressed a people .

I still maintain that it looks like a previous poster said 'hair hat'. It seems like if someone is standing over you the gig might be up. Do people reuse this or is this a one time thing? Do people actually have this done in a salon or just in someone's basement? Does it itch?

Please excuse my ignorance

You can buy pre made closures but a good majority of stylists choose to make their own out of leftover hair b/c it can be made to look more natural. Also a lot of girls nowadays choose to do invisible parts so they have to make their own closure. This isn't a 27 pc but it shows the girl making her own part and closure:

I was thinking the same thing. The hours these ladies put in making sure the glue and hair strip is laid just so...smh

EDGY DUBY WRAP pt. 3: Finishing the Part and Closure - YouTube

I watched this video, SMH the whole damn time. I saw that she had more, so I went to youtube and started another.

In busted English, she explains that she did not have as much money as she would like to have for weave when she was a a broke college student. I had to pause and rewind. WTF? If you can spend all that time gluing in Barbie hair, why can't you hit the English books a few hours more per week? She is obviously a beautiful, intelligent, creative black woman. She just needs polishing.

I can't believe she talked about having money to splurge on weave and how not having her weave during school was so difficult.

My faith in my people is waning with every piece of dumbflukkery that comes to light.
