I don't know if anyone else has seen this movie before, but "Martha Marcy May Marlene" is about a woman who has just escaped from a cult. It's stars Elizabeth Olsen (younger sister to the Olsen twins) as the main character and Sarah Paulson (From "American Horror Story) as her character older sisters. It's really good.

My fiancé's sister had a classmate that was in a cult and right after she got out she went to stay with finance's sister and roommate. She said girl was acting very strange and was saying things that didn't make sense.

I'm Christian, but I'm very suspicious and cynical with most people. I guess I get it from my dad. While my mom was religious he didn't go to church and was really against organized religion.

My mom bought the movie from a discount store a couple months back and we watched it. Very good... but lame ending IMO. Still worth a watch.

I know about Jonestown, and I've always been interested in it. But this thread has made me really look more into it, on youtube. I definitely want to read that book Raven, as well as others on Amazon. Whew!!! The 1970s were a time to be alive! I kinda wish I could've been alive then, but then I'm glad I wasn't, because I might have been sucked into that mess.

George Moscone and Harvey Milk.

And they were killed just 9 days after the massacre. But there was "no connection..." A lot of people were fond of Jim Jones: Angela Davis, Willie Brown, Jessie Jackson (that snake), and others. Just go to the Wikipedia page. There were also a lot of people involved that we will never know were involved, also a lot of people think gov't or CIA had something to do with the whole thing ( I know this was mentioned above posts). Idk... and whether that's true or not we probably will never know. If the truth comes out it will be 100 years from now when everybody who is around to remember it has died.

Wow, I didn't know all this.

I knew about harvey milk but that is not who I was thinking of. So I googled. And I think I was thinking of walter mondale and also jimmy carter. Although Carter never met Jim Jones, Roslyn Carter did and so did Mondale.

Speaking of mega churches, have any of y'all heard of Lakewood Church. The pastor took over the church after his father passed. He has that really charming, toothy, grin that is also really strange. Anyway a month or so he got heckled by a church/cult called The Church of Wells

I grew up going there :shame:, but I don't go to church as nearly as often as I used to when I was younger. I guess you could say I still go to the church. I never got that vibe, and everytime I went to church I always felt like I needed to hear the message. I'm open to hearing others criticism of the church though.

A quick google of Church of Wells lead me to their wiki

In May 2012, a member's three-day-old infant died. Instead of seeking medical attention, the Elders carried the infant's body from house to house, praying for the baby to be resurrected for more than fifteen hours before calling 911.[SUP][2][/SUP][SUP][3]
[/SUP]

In July 2013, Catherine Grove, 26, disappeared from her home in Arkansas without notice, abandoning her car and belongings, only to resurface weeks later under heavy guard at the Church of Wells. She said that she is not being held against her will, and was only "seeking the Lord",[SUP][4][/SUP][SUP][5][/SUP] This is consistent with the accounts of several other members who have cut off nearly all contact with their friends and family.[SUP][4][/SUP] Based on these incidents, the Church of Wells has often been called an emerging cult.[SUP][4][/SUP]On April 2, 2015 Grove left the church and returned to her family in Arkansas.[SUP][6][/SUP] However, she returned to the church only twelve days later (April 14, 2015). My ass would have played dead.
Bodies were checked periodically to keep that from happening.

I have read 'Seductive Poison' some years ago, but Lucy has got me wanting to read it again. It was very telling. I need to read some of the other accounts (books).

Yes! You're spilling the tea! There were those in the Black Panther Movement who backed Jim Jones. This was due to his socialistic views on life and living. 'Seductive Poison' talks about the political power Jim Jones had. Many of those people wanted to leave and/or expose the truth about that place, but his power was what they feared and felt trapped. This eventually culminated into government intervention, which caused him to take drastic measures and shoot the plane and its inhabitants, then commit mass suicide.

I believe the government had a huge hand in this. Who put all those bodies in that position? Why were many of the white followers put up in separate hotels?

'Seductive Poison' tells why. I won't divulge why this was done, but this man was just sick. If memory serves, the writer of the book has a brother who was one of the shooters. He was the only one left, and he took the fall for all of them, and she is in denial about his involvement. She also was careful not to incriminate herselft in much of what happened. I need to to get to reading the book again. I'll have more a little later.

Leah Remini was on 20/20 talking about her experience in the Cult of Scientology. Got me thinking about this thread.

But I am not reading anything about Jim Jones' crazy ass or other cults right now because I need to go to bed and this spooky sh!t will have me sleeping with the light on.

Can I see this happening today? Baby have you EVER been a member of a mega church?

I was baptized in a chruch that grew to be a mega church and I liked it but it began to get a little creepy. It was all centered around the pastor (a former marketing executive) because his charm, looks and charisma drew many people.

It's kind of hard for me to describe it but over the course of my time there, the members became very..... I don't want to say... isolated, maybe severely clique-ish. No matter where you went, if you were identified as a member you received special treatment as opposed to outsiders.

Members hung on his every word and (it seemed) only studied and attended church groups only to please him.

It started to feel weird. I felt like it was turning into a cult for middle and upper middle class Blacks so I left.

I've been gone for 10 years but now I hear and see (I'm still linked to the church via facebook) that the Apostle is now being called by the 10,000+ congregation "Daddy".

It's very popular church but amazingly stays under the radar with no controversy, but if you are into Gospel music then you definitely know the choir that is based in that church. They have won a Grammy and several Stellar awards.

Guess I'm not into gospel music, because this choir/church is not ringing a bell with me. LOL

What city is the church located?

I have always been fascinated by cults and the way that the leaders are able to manipulate their followers to do whatever they want. The "children of God" cult and "heavens gate" were especially creepy to me..

Thank you for making this thread! I was going to make a thread about cults, because I grew up in one.

The "church" is still around, founded in the late 1800's. Not too many people have heard of it.

It is so important that we NEVER forget the jim jones story because it is indeed happening present day. Just look at the mega churches, black and white.

As far as the government involvement and the mind control aspect, why do you think these organizations get funding from the government?

You would think that people would not fall prey to such things after the Guyana tragedy, but there are so many aspects involved here.

Never forget...

The government angle of this story blew my mind...there's more about this that I heard that's so disturbing I don't want to repeat it. This was not an event that happened in a vacuum. It happened not only with govt. consent but with govt. oversight. And yes, poor black people WERE targeted specifically.

I totally believe this! This story is so seedy. One of my favorite people in the book I mentioned was a black woman who was the cook. She had stories to tell, but I don't remember if she survived.

I was reading that Karrueche thread and came across the information on Jacob York's dad. Wow I had no idea this group existed.

"The Nuwaubian Nation or Nuwaubian movement is a religious organization founded and led by Dwight York. York began founding Black Muslim groups in New York in 1967, and has changed his teachings and the names of his groups many times. In the late 1980s, he abandoned the Muslim theology of his movement in favor of Ancient Egypt and extraterrestrial themes, in 1993 leaving Brooklyn for Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia, where he built an ancient Egypt-themed compound called Tama-Re.[SUP][1]

Trump showed me once and for all that millions of people are lost and want to be led by someone. They lead miserable lives and need someone to believe in who will help them escape.

I highly encourage people to learn about Jim Jones and the climate that the u tied states were under when he started his church. The reason that it was primarily black is because it served the poor and was one of the few services that purported to feed, clothe and house elderly black Americans who were often overlooked and poor. His church based in the US was actually desegregated. He eventually veered off from Christian scriptures, proclaimed himself a messiah of sorts, embezzled money and was fleeing an investigation from the American gvmt. That’s why they moved to Guyana.

if you have time on your hands, give this documentary a watch.
