A child has died in an accident involving a Peloton treadmill, according to a message from the company's CEO sent to owners of its Tread+ workout equipment.

"I’m reaching out to you today because I recently learned about a tragic accident involving a child and the Tread+, resulting in, unthinkably, a death," Peloton chief executive John Foley wrote. "I can’t tell you how much this news and horrible reality has hit me personally and our entire team at Peloton."

"While we are aware of only a small handful of incidents involving the Tread+ where children have been hurt, each one is devastating to all of us at Peloton, and our hearts go out to the families involved," Foley added.

The Tread+ treadmill starts $4,295 -- not including any of the add-ons or the subscription service fees.

Foley said the company designs and builds all of its products "with safety in mind," but added that "in order to help ensure that you and your family members stay safe with Peloton products in your home, we need your help."

In order to prevent accidents, Foley recommended to keep children and pets away from Peloton exercise equipment "at all times." Before beginning a workout, Foley said to "double check to make sure that the space around your Peloton exercise equipment is clear."

"When you finish a workout on your Tread+, remove the safety key and store it out of reach of children and anyone else who should not be able to start the Tread+," he added.

The CEO said the company was not providing additional information about the accident at this time out of respect for the family involved.

Finally, Foley said that they are assessing ways to reinforce warnings about safety precautions to prevent future accidents.

Peloton's at-home exercise equipment skyrocketed in popularity amid the COVID-19 pandemic and various stay-at-home orders. On Thursday afternoon in the wake of the news, the company's stock fell by more than 3%.

I fµcked myself up really badly on a treadmill as a kid. Lost the skin off my shins and top of my feet, and knees. Treadmills can be dangerous.

Adults can injured using treadmills and other excercise equipment. They are not made for children to use, especially unsupervised.

Mike Tyson's 4 y.o. daughter was strangled by the power cord from a treadmill. It's a tragic accident, but not unheard of.

I wonder if the child got caught under the base while it was running. A few months ago someone posted how their cat got caught underneath the tread while it was on. The cat ended up with serious injuries and the treadmill base was broken as a result.

This is an extremely sad story. I plan on getting a baby gate to put around my bike because I have seen several posts of parents letting their children play on or around their exercise equipment like it's a joke. One lady almost had the bike topple on her because her toddler pushed a chair under her peddle as she was riding.

I scraped the skin off my shin and just thank God there were no broken bones. But I fell hard enough to be now be extra careful on a treadmill.

Here is a video of an exercise ball getting caught under a peloton tread and lifting it up. This is a heavy-ass tread that requires at least 4 adults to move just the base.

This is why I don’t let my child play in my room with my treadmill. If I’m on it I tell him to give me until I get off unless he is hurt. I also don’t have him in the room while I’m on it and I take out the key and turn it off when not in use.

Someone on my insta always posting her toddlers on the treadmill walking. She does not leave them alone but I cringe. It is just me and i always have the safety key in hand especially since I have an illness so if I fall back it comes off and the treadmill stop. The emergency key should always be activated when not in use especially with kids.
I have a regular treadmill not a peleton from that tik tok video it looks that the design makes it easy to topple a ball should not cause the treadmill to raise like that.

Maybe when the incline lowered the child was underneath and was crushed? Scary!

The only thing I can think of is if it goes to fast and the child was flung off

That actually happened to me when I was 9. I was on a treadmill, my dumbass childhood best friend turned it up all the way, and I got flung off of it. My mom somehow got between me and the rough industrial carpet at the right time, and I have a feeling that what happened to her back is nothing compared to what she saved me from.

Treadmills have always been dangerous. They are not toys and should not be in places where children have access.

Based on the videos y'all posted, parents and pet parents need to close the door and make sure they are in the room ALONE when they operate any exercise equipment. And put away any loose balls or anything that can roll!!

If I’m not mistaken M. Tyson’s daughter got herself hung by the threaded cord of the treadmill.
I remember as a kid running on it with my best friends. We were using it as a fun game and kept bumping it higher and higher as the person ran. Looking back, we were reeeally lucky.
