Quantcast

Dale's Diner in Ohio, closed last week. More customers than anytime in its 10-year history. The problem? No applicants for its job openings

$21,000?? They better gone somewhere with that.
Why on earth would somebody bust their ass, put wear and tear on their car and get straight up abused by customers when they could sit at home and maintain their peace for more?

Ohio, eh? Right-wingers are always pointing fingers at black people or democrats, saying welfare makes people lazy. Turns out they really were speaking about themselves. :sneaky:

I agree with the Republicans on this. I'm fine with giving people extended unemployment benefits but it should be capped at whatever your previous wage was. COVID relief should not be providing you with a windfall.

If you are paying such low wages, do not be surprised to receive no takers. These owners were obviously not willing to pay a living wage. You can earn more on unemployment right now.

Simple: Increase the pay.
And this is what it really is, they don't want to pay people an actual wage they can live off of. Restaurant owners are always touting thin profit margins as reasons why they can't pay their employee more and this simply isn't true. The industry is built on cheap, replaceable labor and they don't want to change that.

They wanted people to do hard work for tiny paychecks with little flexibility, and everyone said "fµck that". Now they're writing this bµllsh!t ass article to get people to feel bad for them. Whatever.

MAKE YOUR PAY MORE THAN UNEMPLOYMENT AND YOU WILL HAVE PEOPLE FLOCKING TO YOUR DOORS!!

Its really that simple. I'd wager that they might have been paying waitstaff around 3 dollars an hour if their tips didn't bring that down to much more. Then the greedy owners wondered why their ppp was sh!t...they don't PAY nobody NOTHING.

I am for all of these restraunts closing if they don't pay a LIVING WAGE.

This is where the rubber meets the road for all of these so called capitalists of the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" crew who believe in letting market forces determine the economy. In the current job market, the wages you're paying aren't sustainable and since you decided not to increase those wages you shuttered your business. These are the very business that don't mind the government assisting their employees as long as the can pay them subsistence wages, so they shouldn't have a problem now.

This is a tough one. My husband owns a restaurant and he plays a living wage and we still cannot find people. We've had to cut hours in order to continue at the level we can make profit. We realize that we are lucky to have these PPP loans and still manage to break even everyday, but the lack of hands is gonna kill us. I feel bad for them, but then I realize that their minimal wage is like $7 and no one is gonna get off unemployment for that with no benefits. Maybe the Repub in these states can offer people some real incentive to get back to work and $7 an hour aint gonna do it.

How much were they willing to pay? I bet that holds the answer.

Some businesses think this is like 2008 because so many people are unemployed. Jokes on them! :laugh2

They should dip into their PPP money & give people a signing bonus or something. Extra UI is only for 4 more months.

This entire country is built on slave or cheap labor. They refuse to change and that's why America will never on be on the level of other nations.

"I can't pay my employees decent wages," then b!tch you don't need a business.

Yep, and we been knew. They proclaim to work so hard, but they always work hard at getting others to do their work while taking the credit. They're the laziest of any group.

Asshole Bosses, going to go out on a limb here and say those employees dealt with Asshole Customers in rare form during this whole pandemic, and they all collectively decided that the both the Owners and their crazy MAGA patrons can kiss their asses and was out!

Let this be a lesson to everyone, like that Chicken Plant in Miss. whenever the News report how a known local Business/Company that have all these "amazing positions".( "great pay" in some cases), but have such a "hard time" hiring people, there's usually a valid reason.

More than likely they have a terrible reputation within the community from those that have worked there for a time and for all the years that they've been in operation. the toxic culture hasn't changed and/or got worst. Even if the pay is say $30 an hr., it might not even be worth it if the work environment is horrible.

People aren't working at this Diner cause they're lazy and want to collect a "gov't check". From their own mouth they have no regard for their staff and have them working in an unsafe conditions.

Time for them to turn of the lights and lock the door.

This just boggles my mind. If you can't afford to pay people what they're worth and treat them well, the obvious answer in big red lights is to not open a business in the first damn place!

These business and corporations owners also need to understand that minimum wage = minimum work.

They play dumb on purpose.

I wonder what all the people who opted not to work and collect unemployment plan to do once they are no longer eligible to receive it. It’s a tough situation.

I bet the owners treated their workers like Gordon Ramsey before the pandemic when the employees needed them more than the owners needed their employees.

these companies want to be able to work you like a donkey and pay you very little, treat you like sh!t and then want you to thank them for the abuse. workers need to realize how much power we have. if they can't pay living wages AND run a business, then they deserve to fail. that's what capitalism is right? :disdain no one is entitled to a successful business or employees.

I grew up about ten minutes from Waterville—I know the area well. First of all, fµck them because they’re probably racist—Waterville was known for it. Second of all, no one in their right mind wants to work in Waterville. A slow as hell hick wasteland. I’m surprised that anyone was going there in the first place and they were, it was regulars buying a cup of coffee and a fried egg.

Moral of the story is, it’s what they deserve.

People don’t want to risk their lives and health to work for a covid denier in a small town for $3/hr plus the small amount of money in tips from mask less customers who are likely also covid deniers? Shocking!!

The fact that they are bothered by having to say please let’s me know they are awful to work for.
