Sauteeing an onion can also sweeten tomato sauce. I think outside America, the onion is used rather than sugar to sweeten tomatoes

This topic always exposes who knows how to cook and who doesn't

(and yes, sugar goes into your homemade, tomato-based pasta sauce)

my ragu don’t need any sugar haha

However I don’t understand the need for sugar. There are other recipes where you used tomatoes or canned tomatoes or paste and people don’t add sugar. Cool it longer or add the right seasonings and whatever acidity you’re taking about won’t exist.

I don't understand why people feel the need to put sugar in everythang. Sugar does not belong in spaghetti ...or grits...or potato salad...or chili...or cornbread...

ETA: or rice...or beans
If you make homemade spaghetti sauce you need something to balance the acidity. You kind of dont want to eat it without sugar added unless you like the high acidic taste.

The crap ina a can or jar doesn't need sugar.

they mean like how coffee can taste too acidic. that's how i feel about starbucks coffee. tastes burnt and acidic as hell. tomatoes would not have the same acidic taste, but the same idea.
That’s bad coffee. A good bean doesn’t need sugar or cream for tasting purposes. You should try imported coffee beans

if you make your own marinara and cook the tomatoes down properly with onion and a few other things, the sweet taste is how you know your marinara is finished. you don't need to add sugar.
Yalll tomatoes organic or nah?

Only people who can’t cook well don’t know that a pinch of sugar balances the acidity of the tomatoes.

A little bit. The umami flavor and acidity in tomato based sauce can be overbearing. When I make sauce from scratch I put sweet peppers and carrots into the blend and then I don't need sugar.

Yes, I do. And I put sugar in grits to make it taste like cream of wheat or oatmeal.

I lived in Italy for a while when my mum got a post there, and this kind of talk can get you in trouble.

I was waiting for this kind of mess when I saw the title:

Thank god Steeve is only talking about a small pinch of sugar. I don't add sugar on it, tomatoes aren't that acid.

to balance out the acidity

If you use jarred tomato sauce check out how much sugar they add already to it
All tomato sauce needs just a tiny bit

Absolutely not, but my mother did. I don't use sugar at all. I periodically use stevia. I use honey more.
