Do you think it’s possible that animals commit suicide?

Yesterday I was driving on the highway in the fast lane and decided to switch over to the right lane. As soon as I got over a pigeon flew down out of no where and landed right on the middle of the lane. It didn’t try to get up and fly away or make any sort of move to get out of the way.
I couldn‘t avoid it, since it was in the middle of the lane, and ended up driving my car over it. I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a puff of feathers coming out of the bottom of my car and knew that I had killed it. I know it might sound dramatic but I kind of feel like a murderer
I‘ve never physically hurt an animal before. It’s been a whole 24 hours and I still feel bad about it.

But my question is, do you think animals just say fµck it one day and decide to end it all? Is it possible that this incident was suicide by car? I know pigeons aren’t the smartest animals but I think it knew what sitting in the middle of a busy highway would mean for it.

Yes. in 2005, 450 sheep leaped to their deaths and fell off a cliff. One sheep did it first and the others followed. It was so bizarre.

Yes. There have been several instances of Dolphins in captivity simply refusing to come up for air until they drown.

Yes, animals do commit suicide. For example, orcas in captivity would purposely hit their head against the tanks which causes them to have severe brain damage and they die shortly after. Another example, some orcas tend to beach themselves meaning they stay on land for a period of time. Due to them weighing a ton and because of gravity, they collapse under their own weight.

They do. I once heard about this bridge where people can't take their dogs because for some reason dogs try to jump off of it, weird.

edit: it's called overtoun bridge

I do believe animals can. We may not be able to think the way some species do but they have their own way of thinking etc.

Umm... wut?

ETA: Ehhh, never mind. I did my Googles and I wish I hadn't. An animal can't consent, how is that not considered rape? People disgust me.

Yes. There’s this plant that if you touch it, it’s extremely painful to the point that you want to die. And some horses touched it and they jumped of a cliff because the pain was too much.

I think squirrels, cats, and ducks commit suicide. They go out into the road like they want a car to hit them. If you're just driving along and then they come out of no where, I assume it is to kill their self since if you're going a certain speed its not like you can just stop.

no i don't think it's possible. they do not understand the concept of death.
This is a lie. When my collie was old, she came up to me one day out of the blue and gave me her paw. Just randomly gave me her paw. We used to "shake hands" all the time when she was a pup and I was a young girl and I would tell her how much I loved her and how she was my best friend. But we hadn't done it in years, which was why I found it so random of her to do. A few days later, she passed away and I realized that last handshake was her way of telling me goodbye. Animals do have a concept of death.

If they didn’t have a concept of death crows and elephants wouldn’t have funerals.

I ran over a squirrel on accident once and I cried. This makes me so sad.

Oh my god, I love squirrels :worried:

I think I would bawled my eyes out.

I mean I felt bad for the pigeon but they’re nothing compared to cute little squirrels.

Yes, particularly other highly intelligent mammals, like marine mammals. The lower you go on the evolutionary ladder, less and less.

This thread is more depressing than I thought it would be. Ugh I saw a baby deer on the side of the road once. IT WAS BARELY alive. I had my infants with me so I pulled over to call animal control. Another car behind me (a young teenaged black girl) jumped out of her car to move the deer out of harm's way. I didn't even have time to tell her don't touch it because of ticks. Anyway she saved the fawn but I was thinking where is the mother??? Deers are so dumb can that be considered suicide when your always doing dumb stuff like jumping in front of cars? In broad daylight?

Back in the 90's these animals called LEMMINGS would kill themselves all the time.

Lemmings don’t commit suicide. That myth was perpetuated because of a Disney film in the ‘50’s where the film makers orchestrated the whole thing

Do Lemmings Really Commit Mass Suicide?

I believe that whales and dolphins can (and going by their treatment in some of these Sea World type places I’m not surprised). has anyone ever seen the movie blackfish about the killer whale Tillicum? That was a rough watch. People ain’t sh!t.

This is so sad. I had a bad day and should not have read this. I remember I saw a car run into the street and try to run back, but his head got caught by the tire and smashed. I screamed. It was so traumatizing. It happened 3 years ago and I still think about it.

I think only animals with self-awareness, like primates, dolphins, elephants, and killer whales would probably be capable of that.

Absolutely! I remember watching a documentary about whales in Sea World and how they were taken from their families and put in these small pools that are basically the size of a tub compared to us. And a few of the whales who were there for over 10 years started to bang their heads into the walls continuously. I think they were fed up and trying to end it. animals are much smarter than we give them credit for.
