NONE OF THESE OUTFITS ARE BAD. DRESS HOW YOU LIKE.
Do you think social media pushes images on us and we subconsciously adopt it ?

THIS IS NOT A THREAD MEANT TO POLICE BW AND OUR CLOTHING CHOICES. THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD IS NOT TO ATTACK OR GENERALIZE.

I have personally observed certain fashion trends amongst us that seem forced to me. I have also been scrutinized or told I was "dressing like i'm white" bc of fashion choices I have made. As if dressing in a certain way is only associated with white. I know have a friend who has been told " she speaks white" bc I guess she speaks a certain way. In casual clothing I can look put together and still have some drip. I have noticed a trend of BW in particular ( YES I KNOW OTHER RACES DO IT TOO but i'm speaking on my community ONLY) wearing outfits that we think may feel WE HAVE TO WEAR based on what media shows us. Granted everyone has their own style and I applaud individuality :b41:b41:b41. Do you think social media pushes images on us and we subconsciously adopt it ? For example, I dress really casual or I dress up which is something I love to do......
WARNING : I KNOW SOME OF THESE PICS ARE YT GIRLS I WILL GET TO THAT IN A MINUTE.

I had a hard time finding Black women with a certain posh styles online advertised anyways. Groan if you like, but it is true. This is why I feel Social media plays a role. I know tons of women IN REAL LIFE who dress like the above pics. I also know so many BW who do not. Your style is your style, but at one point I was trying so hard to dress like what I saw claiming it as my culture, but I was miserable. I wasted so much money on clothing that I felt I had to wear. As BW I feel like we always have to overdo it especially when it comes to having holes in our clothing and having that insta look. Yes I shop from Fashion Nova for certain things. Yes I do have "out there" party outfits. I LOVE vintage wear and the whole hippy thing, but I know how to assemble items and present it in a certain way. GROAN ME ALL YOU LIKE, but when I look through google, pinterest, twitter, instgram, and real life to find a posh/ put together look I get alot of this .....
cc7c702de5dbef2674cd4ac14623c1ff.jpg

which is fine if that is your style, but they hate to show this.......
Easter-Outfit-For-Black-Women7-600x900.jpg

YOUR STYLE IS YOUR OWN, BUT I feel that more of us dress how we think we should based on what we are fed through our culture and media. Not everything we have adopted in our culture is good for us just like our portrayal of BW needing to be the savior of all people, the rap scene, and more. Groan if you like but it is apparent.
YOUR STYLE IS YOUR STYLE, but do you think social media pushes images on us and we subconsciously adopt it ?

We are the most beautiful women PERIOD. Sometimes I feel the way we think we should dress can cheapen us.

If I want to wear the above I will. That is fine, but when I see women who think this is okay to wear to a meeting I smdh.
I am all for us starting our own trends bc we are the most creative beings on this planet but sometimes I don't understand the need to go all out of the way.

I know fashion trends change and we go with the times, but I think we have adopted this idea that if we dress in solid, pastel, subtle colors we are dressing like yt people and to not do that, WE MUST DO THE OPPOSITE AND GO ALL OUT BC IT'S JUST A BLACK THING.

I DO NOT CARE if a yt mayonnaise woman can get away with it. I am focused on US and our self image of ourselves. I think it is also a status thing. The higher up you go the more the choices in clothing, food, and taste change. Serena Williams is a great example. She has her own style, but she exudes this put together/ elegant look

You can say I am policing, but ask yourself who is really policing a BW's look and self image.

You just have to follow whites that dress how you dress if you cannot find black women.

I know what you mean, OP. Although I wouldn't label your style as 'classy' because that implies that any other style is not.

Just say that the styles you see on SM for black women tend to be very sexualized and form fitting. You have a right to not be interested in that.

I don't follow yt's and I know BW who dress with my style bc BW in my family are the ones that taught me! If you were to go online to find BW in posh, put together clothing they are not as apparent or ADVERTISED like yt women are. There is a stigma that BW have to dress a certain way and many of us follow that idea. Sorry if anyone gets triggered and feels attacked bc you dress like one of the above pics I posted.

And what wrong with how they dress. I see what you doing OP.
There is nothing WRONG. I said if that is your style, then so be it. I am inquiring about the BW who feel the NEED TO DRESS THAT WAY BC THEY THINK IT EQUALS BLACK TO THEM.

Just go get your Starbucks double latte mocha whipped and your Ugg boots and Northface jacket and leave us alone.

(By the way, I also drink Starbucks and own uggs and Northface. See how stupid racial stereotypes can be?)

Most of the outfits in this thread are basic, too trendy/try hard, or ugly on both the “classy,” and the ”thotty,” side.

But I do agree a certain type of clothing is pushed on to black women. There is a reason why fashion nova is pushed on black blog sites. Even physical stores like rainbow, “edge,” etc. push an urban club night, risqué vibe. 90% of the clothes On fashion nova and in rainbow are simply trashy or ugly. There are some rare gems you can find though.

Yeah, wording is everything.

While I wouldn't say that there is a 'black girl uniform,' there are definitely ways that black girls are taught not to dress if they don't want to look white or lame.

I'd rather be honest than lie. I see alot of young girls and those of us in our 20's ,30's, and 40's starting to wear this. ALL THE TIME. This is nice, but there is a thing called code switching. I felt the pressure to dress this way ALL THE TIME. I always feel pressure to show up everybody and then I end up looking like boo boo the fool WHEN I FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE. I KNOW NOT EVERYONE FEEL'S UNCOMFORTABLE IN THIS.

Seems like you’re comparing a younger groups style to an older groups. Most young girls dress in the ‘non classy’ way you described

No I just posed a question that no one has given their opinion on.

DID YOU NOT see other people commenting in this thread with their opinion? You posed an answer before you even asked a question
You can say I am policing, but ask yourself who is really policing a BW's look and self image.[/QUOTE]

How black women dress is up to their individual taste, their individual style and their individual choices. Nobody cares about YOUR taste and style...dress how you dress and live life? How hard can such a simple task be?

Thank you. I shop fashion nova and find amazing clothing. I'm not saying that we should dress a certain way. I just feel some of us feel pressure and succumb to it WITHOUT KNOWING. Kinda how some feel the need to wear straight hair. I love straightening my hair BC I LIKE IT. I also wear my natural hair out WHEN I WANT TO. I am not forced or brainwashed.

im pretty sure lots of bw already dress business casual for work. if u want to find images online try pinterest
That's how I find good outfits. I am just saying that even on pinterest there seems to be a bias on what they are willing to show Black Women wear compared to other races. Other women are shown in all these put together, designer outfits that fit their shape ( assuming they have one), and look good while they like to show Black women wearing just any ole thing.

I literally see nothing wrong with any of the looks you're showing as examples of bad style. All those women look put together, even homegirl with the bob who standing in that awkward sideways position to make sure we see the bottom of her shoes are red.

Everybody has their own style. Black women are not all one person, so we don't all dress the same. Maybe if you posted Toya and Tiny and the rest, I'd agree because they're all just label whores, but I don't see why you care so much about what other people are wearing.

Now you know LSA have special unicorns who think they are mysteriously the only black individual to participate in normal everyday things. Now, we are “brainwashed” to wear certain clothes because ole girl says we rarely dress posh because we do not have our official librarian style north face jacket ready in the closet.....

So other black women don’t?
I never said other Black women do not wear their hair how they want to. But there are some BW and little black girls who feel the pressures of this yt washed world and even their OWN COMMUNITIES that tell them they have to wear their hair straight. That was the point of the Natural Hair Movement amongst other things. To embrace YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU LIKE. You got people in OUR OWN COMMUNITIES TELLING US WE NEED TO BE LIGHTER AND EVERYWHERE YOU TURN IT IS ON THE TV AND IN MUSIC. Just like this idea that we always have to be sexy and showing skin.

I emphasized a few time literally that I know tons of Black women who dress put together or in ways the media refuses to show. I did not use the word "librarian once in my post" It may look like a library to you, but that is your OPINION. MY STYLE IS MY STYLE.

Do you know why this post is stupid.

Because you see what you want to see in social media. Algorithms work in a way that they show you things that reflect the stuff you’ve been viewing already.

Therefore if your is suggesting trash for you maybe the algorithms think you like trash ‍♀️

Thanks for your opinion. I guess that also goes for the false narrative they like to put out about Black Women. Is that being reflected by what we already witness in real life bc the Black Women I know are NOTHING like the stereotype. I would not call the other outfits I posted here trash though. I don't think they are trash. I am not choosing and picking what I want to see in social media. Like I said I have tons of examples of Black women wearing fashion that is more on the posh side. I am worried how others are affected.
