no. i have never bought anything from fashion nova or any of those other instagram boutiques.

i wear wtf i want. and i do not want to wear cheap clothing.

i also don't follow "instagram baddies" or try to be one, though.

neither do any of the black women i know over the age of 21... i guess i've aged out of this sh!t.

Thank you. How do you feel about media portraying BW in a certain image/fashion. Do you think we adopt what we see over time or feel the need to dress what we think makes us look Black?

I see this, but does media ever show it. I think not.

social media DOES show this. depending on who you choose to follow.

like i said, i NEVER see anyone dressed in tight or revealing clothing unless it's a night out or something.

but i curate the images i want to see on my social media.

i don't feel pressure to do or wear anything i don't want to wear.

i do not think any style of dress makes us "look black" though? a trend is just a trend to me.

some black women like to wear weave and wigs and switch up their colors and styles.

i think the vast majority i know in real life wear their hair natural or in braids.

that IG baddie aesthetic is not my reality, so i don't feel any way about it.

perhaps b/c i consciously choose to follow and pay attention to people who do more than post pics of themselves? idk.

These uglass clothes, with those was uglass cuts and structuring.

If you want to post pictures of basic ass, New England-esque posh clothes you want black women to wear at least post clothes with colors that will complement our rich skintones.

Those dark, ashy, and grey colors you posted only mute our beauty, not enhance it. You obviously don’t know how to style black women in the best manner but yet here you are complaining.

ETA: And please tell, for sisters than live in continuous 85 degree whether, how should we dress :disdain ?

Anyway you want. I am not telling you all what to wear. Sometimes this is not portrayed in the Summer nearly as much ......

Only thing I have to add is so many of these women have sick ass bodies. If I was a dude I'd legit be drooling. Call me a perv but I was staring at their bodies and beauty more than their clothes/style.

This thread is a mess.

It sounds like you aren't enjoying the NEW rise of "urban fashion", being promoted on social media.

In the 90's, "urban fashion" was all the rage, hot on the streets and brands like Apple Bottom, Baby Phat, etc, were EXTREMELY popular.

Men AND Women would literally wear these brands from head to toe, every day. 5 Days a week.

Some black teens didn't want to dress the same as everyone else, and had a very distinct look/style, and others copied that style and made it mass market.

If you weren't wearing these brands, at some schools you were just ignored.

m_54b34712c8ce8559d3155560.jpg

After this trend died down:

For around 7-9 years, many young women of all races started dressing very similarly. There really was very little noticeable difference between the clothes black women vs. other women were wearing.

This period was a fashion anamoly because there was almost always some sort of aesthetic difference in the styles of young black and white women prefer, even if slight.

This ended with the rise of Fashion Nova, and other brands that sold the "Instagram" or "urban nightclub aesthetic" online. People could order exactly what they wanted, regardless of where they lived, and Instagram influenced pushed these brands heavily.

Fast Fashion is cheap, trendy, sexy, and very accessible so it will continue to be popular with the young.

00347648-02.jpg

That sexy streetwear, "urban nightclub" look is back, and being worn by everyone young or wanting to be young, not just black women.

People are showing more skin, and the oversized/cover up look is no longer as popular.

If you want to dress preppy or in another style, then focus on that and stop following brands/Instagram pages that don't match how you want to look. It's not worth going through Fashion Nova/Forever 21's catalog if you despise 90 percent of what they have, no matter what your age is.

Try Madewell, J.Crew, or second-hand online shops like ThredUp.

I don't think I follow really. Are you saying media is portraying black girls in a different style? I see people dress all kinds of way. That is why social media can be damaging. Some people just like to focus on certain things that fit their narrative when you can also find people dressing any which way they want no matter the race.

I must say though I like these outfits

I think the media portrays BW THE MOST IN A CERTAIN STYLE instead of the various ways above. Very seldom do you find commercials advertising BW in a chic, posh ,or preppy look. I think due to that some have automatically started to associated that look with class, opulence , and just yt. That's why if you wear a certain thing someone can say "why you trying to dress yt" or "why you dressing up all the time" I think sometimes the younger generation might feel the need to wear neon colors and yeezys EVERYWHERE instead of doing it bc they want to.

NONE OF THESE OUTFITS ARE BAD. DRESS HOW YOU LIKE.
Do you think social media pushes images on us and we subconsciously adopt it ?

THIS IS NOT A THREAD MEANT TO POLICE BW AND OUR CLOTHING CHOICES. THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD IS NOT TO ATTACK OR GENERALIZE.

I have personally observed certain fashion trends amongst us that seem forced to me. I have also been scrutinized or told I was "dressing like i'm white" bc of fashion choices I have made. As if dressing in a certain way is only associated with white. I know have a friend who has been told " she speaks white" bc I guess she speaks a certain way. In casual clothing I can look put together and still have some drip. I have noticed a trend of BW in particular ( YES I KNOW OTHER RACES DO IT TOO but i'm speaking on my community ONLY) wearing outfits that we think may feel WE HAVE TO WEAR based on what media shows us. Granted everyone has their own style and I applaud individuality :b41:b41:b41. Do you think social media pushes images on us and we subconsciously adopt it ? For example, I dress really casual or I dress up which is something I love to do......
WARNING : I KNOW SOME OF THESE PICS ARE YT GIRLS I WILL GET TO THAT IN A MINUTE.

I had a hard time finding Black women with a certain posh styles online advertised anyways. Groan if you like, but it is true. This is why I feel Social media plays a role. I know tons of women IN REAL LIFE who dress like the above pics. I also know so many BW who do not. Your style is your style, but at one point I was trying so hard to dress like what I saw claiming it as my culture, but I was miserable. I wasted so much money on clothing that I felt I had to wear. As BW I feel like we always have to overdo it especially when it comes to having holes in our clothing and having that insta look. Yes I shop from Fashion Nova for certain things. Yes I do have "out there" party outfits. I LOVE vintage wear and the whole hippy thing, but I know how to assemble items and present it in a certain way. GROAN ME ALL YOU LIKE, but when I look through google, pinterest, twitter, instgram, and real life to find a posh/ put together look I get alot of this .....
cc7c702de5dbef2674cd4ac14623c1ff.jpg

which is fine if that is your style, but they hate to show this.......
Easter-Outfit-For-Black-Women7-600x900.jpg

YOUR STYLE IS YOUR OWN, BUT I feel that more of us dress how we think we should based on what we are fed through our culture and media. Not everything we have adopted in our culture is good for us just like our portrayal of BW needing to be the savior of all people, the rap scene, and more. Groan if you like but it is apparent.
YOUR STYLE IS YOUR STYLE, but do you think social media pushes images on us and we subconsciously adopt it ?
Thanks for this post. You are going to get a lot of groans though. Put simply, I feel like this type of attire is dressing for black men.

And what wrong with how they dress. I see what you doing OP.

Lol ypu didnt notive all the non classy women generally had better shapes and bodies than the classy ones. Ive noticed for a long time lsa will claim all blavk women have big hips and ass then constantly throw shade to women with these attributes and make alot of racist and classist commentary towards them.

I understand the point you're trying to make. You should probably start with an assessment of your peer group and the influences in your life. Your observations don't really apply to everyone as a whole.

Most of the Black women I knew growing up had more of a classy style. I also went to an HBCU and everyone looked like a fashion model. We never really looked to outside influences to inspire our style. We looked at each other.

OP you are exaggerating. Get off of social media and open your damn eyes to your surroundings. There are plenty of professional black women who dress in business casual and classy clothing.

Thank you I am trying to get us to OPEN OUR EYES and do better. You can wear what you like, but some BW have been brainwashed thinking they have to be a certain way and they accept it with open arms. BM want to see us look a certain way so we do everything for them and a culture that could care less about us or value us as humans. I'm over it.

I agree. I grew up in the South and it was different. We looked to inside influences and made sure we liked the style as well has making sure it was good for us. I was taught how you present yourself is important. Facts are facts. They want BW to present themselves in a certain way and they market that to us.

Op please tell me what "style" inspiration am I supposed to get from this picture. Op wants to talk about how black women should dress with the most basic f21 jeans old navy tee looking ass fit. Like who can't think of this outfit and put it on. What's special and what's inspired in this picture I desperately need to know, because I do not understand. Is there something I'm not seeing because

It is. A few years ago I used to shop at more urban type stores and stayed getting certain type of black men in my face, usually hood dudes.

People don't even talk about how much style and how you dress influences the type of men you attract

Seems like you’re comparing a younger groups style to an older groups. Most young girls dress in the ‘non classy’ way you described
It doesn't make it right though.
Why do girls in their 20s always have to dress like hookers and escorts but women in their 30s and 40s are forced to cover up and dress "boring". All of this encourages ageism. I'm in my early 20s and I hate the fashion trends for my age group becauase everything is always short, tight, sheer, cheap, scantily clad and provocative. These same girls start calling themselves "old" by age 25 because they don't want to grow up and dress more classic, elegant, and mature. They never accept age.

I think black women should feel comfortable exploring any style that interests them. I do feel like the body-con, Fashion Nova look is heavily pushed on young, black women. I wish more young women felt comfortable exploring and dressing for their own personal tastes instead of dressing for the male gaze.

Lmaooo! Maybe that’s her.

Anyway, most people I see IRL (outside the club) are not dressed like IG models.

Most people dress more like that chick in that pic than IG models. Basic leggings, jeans, uggs, gladiator sandals. Most women are basic as fµck in the way they dress.

If the point OP is making is that certain things are pushed and prompted to certain demographics, she would be correct. Every culture and subculture in America has a set of programming and propaganda pushed upon them. If everyone has predefined personality traits and preferences then they’re easier to control, no matter what archetype they fall into, there will be a way to deal with them.

But as far as thotwear and tight revealing clothing...that’s pushed across the board nowadays. It used to be that these kinds of clothes were considered “fast” or hoe like. Now everyone under 40 dresses this way regardless of race. I know it definitely spawns partly from an “urban” influence, but the 80s/90s Rock band video girl also has an influence on fashion nova type styles. Reality shows like jersey shore, love and hip hop where regardless of race they’re dressed like clubbers. It’s not just us they’re targeting that look to.

As an aside, I do agree that BW tend to be oversexualized in the media though. Even when the characters are educated and powerful, they have them fµck!ng left and right.

Black women have been stereotyped as Hoes with no self control and no class since slavery. White supremacy by way of the media is invested in keeping that stereotype going with the goal of keeping a black women’s value low.

So everything they promote to us clothes, music, entertainment serves that agenda.

So ( to the question in the OP) the media does not force but rather it sell us on a certain kind of fashion.

It seems like some people in this thread are getting triggered by your thread. For what I don’t know? But a hit dog will holler. Anyways, I had someone tell me when I was in middle school I dressed “white.” When I heard this I was insulted because when I think of the way white people dress, I think if sketchers...basically they don’t dress cute in my opinion. But, I agree, I do believe society pushes a certain look on black women. Our bodies have to be on display 100% of the time, which is why it seems that “our” aesthetic is tightly fitted clothes or form fitting. Which is annoying. Although, I have seen tons of black women both in real life and online who dress so called white or just don’t fit the stereotypical style associated with us.

The media doesn't give black girls a diverse range in representation, so the fashion sense reflects that. The only subculture that black girls are commonly associated is urban streetwear or clubwear. But social media is showing that there are black girls that are part of many different subcultures.
