OP look into this dog trainer. He gives amazing advice for dog training and separation anxiety.

Hey all, appreciate the responses. I did reach out to the rescue and let them know I'd like to return him. They responded they would sponsor training and boarding him so he can meet a trainer a volunteer's family used on their own dog with the same issues. Apparently that dog no longer has any issues, so I'm curious to see if that trainer will work. They really want him to stay with me obviously if they are willing to pay for all of that. I'm just waiting to make arrangements with them & the trainer. I'll update when he returns back to me.

Hey all, I thought I would update this thread...

I ended up returning him to the rescue organization. The coordinator played dumb like she wasn’t informed of any of his issues from the previous family. I miss the little guy, but ultimately I feel SO much better. It was like a weight lifted off of me and I haven’t had any anxiety flare ups since. I’ll eventually get another dog. I feel more prepared to read between the lines now and will vet the rescue & dog more thoroughly.

You did what?!? Well, at least you realized you weren't a dog person so I do commend you for that and for returning him. I've seen people do heartless things when they decide a dog is no longer convenient for their life. Dogs are very, very needy even the most well behaved ones. So, I advise anyone that doesn't have to next 10-15 years to dedicate yourself to walking, feeding, grooming, vet visits, possible dog sitting or boarding during vacations, (peeing, pooping, separation anxiety) which is worse though the puppy stage to the 1 few years if the dog hasn't been accustomed to human connection then don't get a dog.
