I've been dying to get this unpopular opinion off my chest ever since I joined WeddingBee a few years ago, where they act like a round solitaire ring on a plain band is the end all be all of engagement rings.

103-1078_04.jpg

They have a lot of threads asking members to post their engagement rings and almost 50% of the submissions are from women with pretty much the exact same thing with just a variation in carat size. Even the bands tend to just be platinum. No personality whatsoever. The other 50% are split amongst the other stones, halos, etc.

I understand wanting a timeless look, but at this point I genuinely feel like a round solitaire is so overdone that it's the equivalent to buying a picture frame and leaving the stock photo inside.

I am so freaking sick and tired of those rings.

What's your engagement ring unpopular opinion?

The big-ass diamonds that have been popularized by celebrities are tacky.

Also, most engagement rings are very generic and lack creativity.

My unpopular opinion is that it's not only '...The thought that counts':

I've seen some raggedy, cheap, hand-me-down hideous-azz rings posted(WB, The Knot etc ) and inevitably, a gaggle of Pickmeisha McChoosemees come in saying it doesn't matter if the guy gives them a Ring Pop, trash bag twist tie, Zales, or a Funyun.

The next step in the PM dance is to list all of the people they've knownand/or celebs with nice rocks who divorced or have sh!tty marriages. As if none of the women with quads, and the halos-within-halos orbiting drillbits have terrible fiancés and husbands.

There's like this weird idea that, the smaller/more poorly cut/synthetic the stone, the more noble the love is. IMO, It's just as dumb as assuming the opposite.

Optional step 3: "dIaMonDz aRe a ScAMmmmm" with a copy+paste of some anti-diamond article...and a list of items they could purchase instead.

Optional step 4: Try to shame and convince the disappointed woman into accepting the 'heirloom' or brand new ugly because she should be happy someone wants her.

I have a cushion cut solitaire. I came to this conclusion through many observations:

1) I felt halos were a trend/fad and although tempting to give my diamond more sparkle, I feared someone guessing the decade in which I got married with the halo.

2) I went to a ballet and got quite tipsy with a friend and we waltzed into a jewelers shop and he told us the princess cut was declining in demand and suggested cushion.

Once I found the cushion it seemed the best blend between old and new. My mom has a princess but I loved the tradition of round so I blended the 2.

Not sure how unpopular this is but yellow gold looks much better than silver or platinum on black and other dark skinned women.

Stones with too much metal used in the settting look cheap.

Cluster rings are TERRIBLE. Just throw them all away.

Halos rarely look good except on sizable oval stones à la Kate Middleton.

I like bling but any round diamond ring with a solitaire over 3.5 carats looks a bit bogus for everyday wear.

Some lady created a whole blog about the ugliness of black women's engagement rings (she was black too). It has since been deleted but if she wasn't on point. Those rings be ugly ass fµck in The Marriage Club. The "upgrades" look worse than the original rings.

i do not like those cluster rings that are intentionally designed to look like one big stone:

5201520-new-e1584458633272.jpg

or this, for example:

gabriel-co-14k-white-gold-cushion-diamond-cluster-ring-3.jpg

then we have the three stones... although some of them can be quite nice depending on the cut of the stones and design/placement, i generally don't like the 3-stone rings, either.

apiriltmo__64881.1592316571.jpg

finally, 10,000 baguettes. i think these must be hard to keep clean b/c they always look dull or appear to be made of questionable quality diamonds when i see them on women's hands.

oh snap! i forgot all about that blog! i used to read her and then she either disappeared or i lost the bookmark. it was just such an interesting origin story (i think they were FWBs & she got pregnant w/twins?) that i just wondered how it would all turn out?

i will never forget her post about marrying man who had slept with so many women that she could never go to his homecoming, reunion, or any other alumni event without encountering his past "conquests."

i am glad he was honest about his background, but i don't think i could be her. like... nah.

i do hope they are still happily married & taking care of their twins, though.

Here's the most unpopular opinion about engagement rings: money that could be better spent elsewhere.

And yes, I'm a (black) woman.

I'd be quite happy wearing just a band. Engagement rings cost so much. And frankly, most are ugly to me.

Save that money towards the honeymoon or a car or house or something

Giant diamond and a thin band ia stupid.

Gemstone rings or atleast colored diamonds should be back in styoe.

My first opinion is buy the nicest quality diamond that you can afford. Most people don’t know anything about diamonds, and just assume that mall quality is nice. Never buy mall-quality diamond jewelry. It’s overpriced, and most likely has ( I )clarity, which is the lowest clarity grade. Do your research. Always get GIA or AGS certified diamonds for an ER ring. If you ever plan to resell it, you can get back a good portion of what you spent on it, versus if you buy an uncertified stone.

Second opinion is don’t pick size over cut and clarity. Some women have bigger stones (over 3 ct), but the stone is noticeably included, and the cut isn’t great, so the ring doesnt sparkle. Quality over quantity.

Third opinion, is that don’t get an Emerald or Pearl Gemstone ring. They are very soft gemstones, and can easily crack. Also, good quality emeralds are more expensive per carat than diamonds. These gemstones are more for special occasions.

Fourth opinion is that an engagement ring should be nice enough to pass down to your daughter or niece, or left as an heirloom. Even though most people don’t see them that way.

Thanks. I do think that the BitchUJusMad blogpost focused on race/color when it's more of a class and income issue. Zales/ Kay and other maul(mall) jewelers are(were? do they still exist?) selling their crap to ppl of all colors. A lot of consumers just don't know much about jewelry/stones ...or they get what they can afford.

I'd rather have no diamonds/gems than crappy ones but everyone doesn't feel that way.

Unpopular opinion : Moissanite is just as sparkly and almost as hard as a diamond and is much cheaper. You can get a very beautiful Moissanite for cheaper.

Also I agree with whoever said a big rock on a plain band is ugly. To me the band is really what makes the ring beautiful. More thought should be put into the design of the band and not just the shape and size of the rock.

Colored rings are stunning

Ovals look better than princess/cushion cuts

You can tell the difference between real diamonds and mossinates

Clarity, cut and color are more important than size

Anything over 5ct looks too big on most shapes

My UO is that my engagement diamond isn’t my forever diamond. My husband better upgrade that sh!t every 5-10 years.

I do have an eternity band that he gave me that I consider my forever ring, but my main diamond needs to grow as we do, our wealth does and our lives do!

my opinion that I've found to unpopular among some is that I actually want a diamond and not a moissanite stone or that stuff? like I just want a diamond to wear, is that too much to ask y'all?

I understand that diamonds are expensive y'all but that ring is a symbol of unity and love, so it better a fµck!ng diamond

I also really like Ariana Grande's engagement ring, like I'M IN LOVE WITH IT. the way it looks and the cute meaning behind it.

Some of my friends and others were saying it didn't look too good but I think it's different in a good way, modern, but also timeless and elegant.

If I could get any engagement ring, I want it to be inspired by this.

Unpopular opinion: Men love showing off and the size and cost of your ring IS actually a testament to how much your future husband will value and love you. This can possibly also show that he's happy to provide for you. If a man is willing to spend a good buck on a ring, imagine what else he'll spend on just for you.

Also, I don't care if diamonds aren't really rare, I want one.

i dislike halo rings. i think they are really tacky looking sometimes.

any one stone 3 carat or over is starting to get into tacky territory. the ridiculously large celeb rings are just comical and gross.

YELLOW AND ROSE GOLD ARE THE SUPERIOR TONES.

I think there's some truth in this too. People will say also things like 'He did great!' and congratulate/admire the guy. A lot of it is about the men showing off.

It (a nice sized diamond w/ excellent cut and specs) can also kind of affect how some (not all) people perceive you as couple --for ill or for good. It can be 'Woman with high standards with a doting man' or 'Materialistic, spoiled brat with a whipped "simp" ' :lol

I've had people notice(and yeah, more men than you'd think) when buying things, and other transactions, doing paperwork/signing etc. Even with medical care(I've had a few drs, usually men, admire mine.) It is interesting.

I refuse to have an engagement ring that is not gold.

gold supremacy, period.

Most of my jewelry is yellow gold or set in YG because it suits my undertones. Other brown women are best in white metals like platinum/WG/silver. They say neutrals can do some of both. It really depends. Some women will let trends override personal aesthetics/harmony.

I agree. For example, Bethenny’s latest engagement ring looks ridiculous because of its size. It would be much more beautiful in the 2-3 carat range.

It surprises me that more women don’t have yellow gold bands. Most women wear yellow gold jewelry because it’s more flattering, so why not use it on your most important piece of jewelry?!

I think I remember hearing someone claim that it was considered dated, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Wendy Williams, Tia Mowry, and Monique Samuels come to mind.

I loooove gemstone rings. Especially Ruby’s and deep green emeralds! They are just too soft for everyday wear, though :(

The good thing is that moissanites come in a variety of colours so people are turning to them to get the colour rings they want!

My unpopular opinion is that yellow gold rings are classic and will always be. I know the trend is to go with white gold/platinum but yellow gold is more beautiful and compliments brown skin significantly more.

ETA - I went through the thread and realized other people think the same.
