Facebook Shuts Down 'Bareback Page,' Devoted To Unprotected Gay xes, After More Than 20,000 'Like' It

The Huffington Post | By Meredith Bennett-Smith
Posted: 02/13/2013 1:25 pm EST | Updated: 02/13/2013 1:38 pm EST

A controversial Facebook page devoted to the practice of unprotected xes between consenting male partners (known as "barebacking") has sparked a dialogue in the gay community, after the social network's moderators shut down the page Tuesday.

LGBT-focused news site Queerty first posted about the "Bareback" page on Tuesday. At the time, the page had more than 20,000 Likes. The social network's counters also indicated at that time that more than 5,500 people were talking about the page.

Queerty's Dan Avery noted that some members of the site appeared to be using it as a way to find and hook up with other men looking to have unprotected xes. The discovery prompted Avery to wonder whether the page should be allowed on Facebook.

A few hours later, the page was gone.

When reached for comment, Facebook told The Huffington Post it could confirm only that the page had, in fact, been taken down.

Facebook's Community Standards prohibit nudity, underage pornographic content and promotion of self-harm, among other restrictions; but none of those apply directly to the Bareback page.

The Queerty article, meanwhile, has kicked off an intense debate in its comments section, making it one of the most discussed articles on the site.

On the one hand were posters like CaptainFabulous, who wrote that barebacking is a personal preference that has become far less risky than it once was:

HIV isn’t a death sentence and hasn’t been in a long time. We don’t need protecting. We need to stop judging each other and accept that although we’re all gay (or some shade of gay) that we’re entitled to do whatever the hell we want, no matter how risky or unsafe, without some snot nose uppity b!tch telling someone they’re living their life the wrong way.
Others, like HalcyonDays, disagreed:

At minimum this kind of irresponsible behavior has financial consequences. The wave of health care costs connected to this behavior will impact all of us in the years to come. Barebacking is not really an entirely individual choice when the impact of the choice goes beyond the individual.
I think as a subculture we have eroticized and fetishized BB. Like many, I find that pδrn fantasy version erotic, the reality not so much.

In 2011, The San Francisco Chronicle wrote that, increasingly, a younger generation of gay men had come to see barebacking in a new light:

Barebacking and unprotected xes are not the same, according to experts who see barebacking as a separate "phenomenon" of the late 1990s. More men began consciously rejecting condoms, while simultaneously, medical breakthroughs were allowing people with HIV to live longer without getting AIDS...

Hence, one definition of barebacking: intentional, unprotected anal xes, while accepting or seeking the risks.

The term is also used to describe not just a behavior, but a "subculture," as it was in Tim Dean's 2009 book, "Unlimited Intimacy: Reflections on the Subculture of Barebacking."

As indicated by the public nature of the Facebook page, however, barebacking is becoming more and more a part of the mainstream.

Last month, a survey of gay and bisexual men by New York’s Community Healthcare Network (CHN) found that almost 47 percent of men who use apps to find partners admitted to barebacking “always, often or sometimes."

In the report, Dr. Freddy Molano, Assistant Vice President of HIV Programs and Services at CHN, said that the survey showed AIDS education has increased, but that "among certain populations, HIV/AIDS is on the rise, and that's alarming."

It's their lives so gays should be able to do as much barebacking as they want. However, the bisexual ones are the problem 'cause they bring the outcomes of these practices over to the general population. Not good!
Be that as it may, I think Facebook was correct in removing that page. Children may view that crap!

There are a lot of other pages that FB need to shut down! I'm TIRED of seeing silicone infused asses in my newsfeed. Once upon a time, a person's predilection for pδrn was a guarded secret.

Now, everybody see that you "LIKE" big bubble butts and double D's, after they read your bible scripture that you posted.

Exactly, especially to the bisexual part. Bisexuals, both male and female (well generally speaking the bisexual males), are the main part problem for the HIV virus spreading throughout the human population all willy nilly. They are sick egotisical bastards, and why they do not want to stay completely GAY, and leave the women to only descent loving straight males is beyond me.

Disgusting vultures. This reminds me of the oversexed gay men who lurk in the public parks looking for some anonymous action....

JC, there are SO MANY other pages for children to view. I advised my "friends" to type this page name in their search tool, because it came through my newsfeed after one of my "friends" commented on a video (I forgot the name and clear my wall weekly), but the page had videos of ppl having xes. No lie.. FB is an undercover pδrn site and they KNOW it. Filthy bastuds..

Y'all better deactivate your kids' pages.. Lil Ray Ray is only 10 and shouldn't be using social media anyway.

I work in health profession and I have to say the fact is that gay men have a high HIV/AIDS rate and that page was a public health disaster waiting to happen. The issue was that they were promoting a risky behavior that leads to infectious disease. Good move by Facebook.

I wonder if this page was created by a straight person who is against homosexuality. If not, then it's a self-loathing gay person.

Whoever did it was an evil person period. This page was calling people to a lifetime of suffering and possibly death. Even if it isn't a death sentence it sure as hell is a lot of suffering and of course tax payer dollars. I work in public health and I worked a few years on HIV/AIDS prevention and seeing things like this pisses me off.

So now that the AIDS cure is making a breakthrough they want to go and turn it into a super-bug. Gonorrhea is already becoming drug resistant and may well become the new death sentence waiting for their asses.

Just because you're paranoid and don't like bisexuals. Doesn't mean other women don't mind dating bisexuals.

If they want to have fun despite the risk. Why stop them? If they know the consequence them it's on them. Besides, the drug companies benefit.

Who knows a member of a drug company may have placed this on Facebook with the idea that since homosexuals are undesireables, nobody would miss them. They can have all of the unprotected, high-risk xes they want. We'll be on the back end to treat them. Ching! Ching!

Of course there are some women who are willing to date bisexual men(May God be with them), but there are many others, like myself included will not take the chance. I like challenges, but bisexual men are too much of a challenge. Besides straight men seems to well adjusted for women, than let's bisexual men. Bisexual men seems better suited for gay men.

JC, I never thought about it that way. Maybe somebody, somewhere is just cashing in on the homos for the reasons you stated above. And I guess the true problems raises when these bisexual men start having xesual intercourse with oblivious women.
