When, where, and how was Family Matters (1989-1998) more realistic?

I remember how I used to try and force myself to cape for this embarrassing feature of the TGIF line-up. It’s a wrap now.

You mean to tell me a Black family living in Chicago would’ve willingly put up with Steve Urkel’s weird and annoying ass? Please.

tenor.gif

And the father was a police officer? Steve’s scrawny ass would be missing still to this day if Family Matters was more realistic. Barging in peoples’ homes unannounced, causing destruction to property, trespassing, and stalking? The hell? He would’ve been handled.

Most people fake-like Family Matters because Carl’s fat ass and Harriet’s boring ass income levels were nowhere near The Huxtables’ or The Banks.’ Sounds like a personal problem if you ask me. Those Winslow hoes should’ve picked up second jobs.

I’m not even going to highlight the travesty known as Myrtle Urkel or how Judy disappeared around 1995 and was never seen again.

Remember Original Gangsta Dawg?
You know what? I’m done with this thread.

You are right about fighting words because George Lopez's show was the realist family show on TV.

What made it so real? There was no coddling, they just spit it out in real sh!t matter of fact ways and because I love that sh!t, I loved that show as the best family show in TV.

I mean we can talk about how TVone plays it 24/7....cause I’m confused who asked for this?

I don’t think anyone is knocking down TV One’s doors asking for reruns. They’re probably being generous to the cast.

No the fµck it wasn't. What black person would elevate a show about Latinos over ANY black family show ever?

ROC was the realest black family show on tv ever.

We're still fighting the same community battles to this day (drugs and thugs).

Black felons who have been rehabilitated still being disenfranchised compared to white men who served time and bounce back. Then they get xesually assaulted in prison and come back out spreading HIV to black women.

Still taking in elderly relatives and wayward siblings (some of us).

Yeah. I don’t understand why George Lopez and his show (that I never had any interest in watching) was mentioned.

On some level, Carl wouldn't have had to worry about his daughter Laura around Urkel. There would have been none of this going on: :sneaky:

I don't always agree with your font but you're right this time.

Roc was the most realistic Black sitcom on TV

My husband grew up in a Family Matters style family. Minus the whole human cloning thing.

My family was very similar to the Huxtables and so I identified the most with The Cosby Show and it was very realistic to me.

The beginning of the show was farely realistic and I appreciated that they were a regular middle class working family with regular, down-to-earth kids. I think the show is overall overrated though and didn't age well.

Unpopular opinion:

That whole TGIF/Miller-Boyett sitcom lineup in the 90s aged the worst out of all the 90s network sitcoms.

Even other shows from the same era and network (like Roseanne and Home Improvement) aged far better.

Uh oh -- looks like one a these fonts done mustered up some fight -- y'all get out the way and give her some room!! :laugh

That said, I didn't consider race, culture or ethnicity -- I considered the family that was the realist *to me*. Only a person who feels and thus believes they are low would look at my choice as an elevation, which is why I don't see it as an elevation the way you and those who agree with you do.

Nice try chick...save the hallelujah gif...I'm not into Christianity like that.
Trashy ass use of a praise and worship gif anyway.

because she thinks we feel "low" about ourselves for questioning the fact that it was included...scroll up.
that font has a long history of making questionable comments and is likely NOT black/ADOS identified in the least.
always been a suspect font.
fµck!ng Rhett Butler as a user name should be a clue.

Family Matters was the sh!t. Urkel was the first WheelChair Jimmy. He gave voice and swag to nerds. Laura was a real black girl with real black girl sh!t. Like the racist cheerleading tryouts.

Everything is not for everybody,

Meh it did tackle police brutality/racial profiling and gun violence in Chicago. I'll give it that not a lot of black sitcoms post Cosby were willing to go there.

I didn't even know that this was unpopular. I figured that everyone did the same that I did and stopped watching those shows once they were old enough to realize that they were lame as hell.

People express nostalgia for the TGIF lineup so I assume the shows are beloved by 90s kids; that's why I consider the opinion unpopular.

And yes they were lame; worse than lame they are incredibly dated and unwatchable.

Putting aside the off-camera shenanigans of the sitcom's namesake, I acknowledge that The Cosby Show was more memorable than Family Matters. How many scenes can you remember from Family Matters all these years later?
