What notes work well together? Do you avoid using certain notes for certain layers? Or limit certain notes to certain layers?

I match the woods in the base, and (always) avoid anything with synthetic notes. But I'm a vintage collector, so I've got stuff that predates the heavy reliance on synthetics.

I match fragrances that have similar vibes, as in they make me feel the same way. I'll do fragrances in the same family, ie gourmand. Yesterday I mixed a vanilla fragrance with a caramel fragrance. Then I'll mix fragrances that share a note or two. Also fragrances that lean too much in one way, let's say it's too masculine, then I'll add something to make it less masculine.

This may not be helpful but I more so go with scents that I feel like has something another is missing? Like I layer Casablanca by Swiss Arabian with Angels Share by Kilian because they both have that spicy kind of apple pie smell to them but Casablanca is more feminine and Angels Share is more masculine and boozy.

I either:

layer perfumes I know will go together like two vanillas or two florals.

Layer notes I see in other perfumes, so if I see jasmine and vanilla in one fragrance i feel comfortable layering perfumes of mine with those notes.

Perfumes that smell kind of similar. Sometimes the notes will seem like they don't go but it can work if the perfumes smell alike anyway.

Layer with a simple perfume. If you have a straight vanilla or musk etc that doesn't smell too complicated, it can usually be layered. I like mixing my Narciso EDP with a lot of perfumes because it's just a clean, soft musk.

You know I just tried a new orange scent I actually really like and I think some salty sea water, ozonic notes would do well with it now that I think about it. Thank you!

interesting, will try this.

anything you recommend for the orange?
Atelier Cologne has one of the best orange scents. It's true to scent and has a good linger.

Let me know how it goes! What brand did you try?

Literally the Atelier Cologne haha. I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I did but it just smells like a fresh cut orange in the most pleasant and wearable way.

This is all exactly what I do.
