I have been doing gel nail polish since October.

I wanted to know when do you need to let your natural nails breath.

I used to go to the salon but now I do them myself.

I don't want to mess up my natural nails so I wanted to get advice.

Question: does gel nail polish last longer than regular?? Part of my reasoning for not doing my own nails was, I was tired of the polish chipping after a few days

Sitting. I love gel nail polish but man does it damage the nail. I (foolishly) started peeling it off myself because I was too lazy to go down to the salon and that sh!t was taking off the skin or whatever part of my nail.

Much longer if applied correctly at least 2 weeks with no chipping.

Anyone have a steam gel remover? If so, thoughts?

If you apply it and cure it in a lamp properly it will last for ever without chipping. The issue you will have is that after around a month the gel will start to lift off your nail. You'll also get a space between your nails and the gel application after 2-3 weeks since your nails grow everyday. Like this (She must be at week 5 or 6):

I do gel all the time. If done correctly and with good products it can last 2-3 weeks. However u do have to let ur nails breathe because if u peel off the gel or take it off the nails will start to become weak and u have to do gel again so they won’t break. I’m currently trying to grow my nails back because I’ve been wearing them short in quarantine so I’m avoiding gel for now.

Never. My nails are fragile after taking off the gel. The polish makes my nails sturdy. I take it off then apply a new color.

I’m using polygel now but I would redo my gel polish every two weeks when I used gel. Using primer helps prevent chipping and lifting. My nails break once they grow long so I always keep a coating of some sort over them. I didn’t have an issue with gel polish damaging my nails. I do everything at home including taking the gel off. I buff the top layer and wrap my nails in an acetone soaked cotton ball and foil for 15 mins and remove the loosened gel with a cuticle pusher. My nails grew their longest with gel polish.

I'm letting my toenails breathe until June. I was getting regular gel pedicures for the last 3 years. The gel started weakening my big toenail and all my closed toe shoes starting hurting my toenail until it bruised and then stopped growing where the bruise was. Now I just have half a toenail until it grows out. I never had these issues with regular pedicures. Will be doing regular pedis from now on.

I never take a break between gel/shellac sets and do them myself at home. I find bare nails so ugly!!!

My nails are still nice and hard too.

I had one. It does reduce the nail damage cuz the gel just kinda melts off. It’s time consuming tho, and it never fails—- there is always some polish that is left behind for you to have to scrape off.

I too peeled off polish and my nails were weaker. I try to take the polish off the right way, but when I see it peeling it’s hard for me to not just peel it off.

Yes it doesn't. I got tired of polish chipping after 2 days as well. Since I started wearing gel, I haven't gone back. I only wear regular polish on my toes.

I recommend kiara sky. No chipping. I usually wear my gel polish 2-3 before changing the color

Without fail I always end up damaging my nails so I take few weeks to a month break. My nails grow back fast so it's not a big deal but I can't seem to take off gel without causing damage.

if you soak them off you should be able to wear them continuously. I find that when you peel them off you make your nails week, I usually go one week off. I also do my nails myself

Do nails need to breathe? I am into Color Street and regular nail polish. I don't like using gel and dip.

Your nails don't need to breathe.

when I saw the thread title this was the exact video I thought of!! Nails don’t need to “breathe”. It is usually improper removal that causes damage. Removal of any nail enhancements takes patience, which is the hard part for me.

Same for me, I hate how long it takes to soak off. Some people manage to do it in 10-20 minutes. It always takes longer for me.

Beauty secrets thinner at sally beauty
I actually have some of this and thank you so much for responding. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to use regular nail polish thinner for gel polish that must be cured with a lamp. Thanks again so much.
