How do you keep it from getting tangled or dry during the warmer Spring/Summer months. What's your nightly routine?

And keep it nice looking for examples

I usually use hard gels so that the crunch maintains my hair longer as I wear my WnGS for usually 5 days but during the summer I wash my hair more. I re wet my hair when I notice it is starting to get very frizzy but I do try to avoid applying more product unless I am changing my style. I just wear my headscarf at night. I use serums in the summer for my ends. In the winter I don’t as I usually layer my WnGS in the winter.

Twisting or braiding hair at night is essential! After washing my hair I use a leave in conditioner then twist my hair at night. In the morning I take the twist or braids down and pluck it to my desired style.

At night my hair looks something like this (this isn't me in this picture).

I think it’s best to do protective styles in the summer. It’s humid you’re hair is going to poof up. Get braids or twist.

Frequent washing (usually every 3-4 days) and lots of gel for hold. If I go longer then that there’s a higher likelihood of tangles. Since the weather is warmer I don’t have to worry about long drying times like I do in the winter.

I am deeply committed to braid outs and pineapple at night. I wash my hair every 3-7 days depending on how I feel or boredom. The more I keep my hands out of my hair the less tangles I have. Also stronger gels will keep the curls in place (and also release well over time due to moisture and humidity in the air, showers, etc) by day 2-3 my braid outs look like wash n go’s. Two days of that and I know it’s time to wash again

I noticed the biggest changes when I started washing my hair more often.i used to be every other week, but now I wash about every 5-7 days. That sets the stage for hydrating my hair. I usually wear WNGs and honestly never have tangling or matting. I sleep in a buff or bonnet and just shake my hair in the morning and go.

Also make sure your hair is kept up with the trims too. Don't hold on to dead ends.

I wear braids in the summer. As for spring and early fall, (like fonts say) I use a lot of leave in conditioner.

I usually re-moisturize and re-twist every 2-3 days. On the days I don't do that, I usually just pineapple it and fluff in the mornings.

I am thinking about braids right now because I like washing my hair but I just learned how to do a wash n go but it is tedious and I can't see me putting all these products in my hair all the time. Good ol braids it's gonna be.

Like several others have said, keeping it washed and moisturized. For me that's every 2-7 days.

I wash it ever 4 days. I use lots of conditioner. I sleep with it in a loose puff or two puffs and wear a bonnet. I fluff and shape with oil and curl refresher in the morning.

Wash every 5ish days. I do mini pineapples at night. I don't apply anything to my hair between washes unless I decide to pull it up into puff.

I wash once a week and do a wash and go with a decent hold gel. If I get sweaty though, I'll wash sooner as needed. The gel holds my hair enough that it doesn't tangle. I don't pick it out or anything. I just let the cast break over the course of the week. I use Uncle Funky's gel for moisture, since it's a humectant. Then I throw a stronger hold gel over top to prevent frizz and tangles. I wear a satin bonnet at night and finger fluff in the morning.

A question for everyone that uses gel:
How Do You All Stop Flaking?

It seems to usually come down to

1) using too much gel. Go easier on it
2) Bad pairing with the leave-in/gel the person used. Don't pair them again
3) A gel that just flakes too much. Use a different gel.

It's all trial and error.

Do your WNGs on soaking wet hair. Like water dripping down your neck an everywhere soaking wet. Also, are you applying a creamy leave in underneath your gel? The products might not be playing well together. I use an humectant gel and then top it with a stronger hold gel to give a good cast.

When trying out new products, I'll usually mix them together on the top of my hands to see how they will pair together. If they clump or don't mix well, I don't use them together. I also use plenty of water before applying the gel, and make sure not to use too much.

So you're only using gel on your hair, instead of a creamy product or leave in? How does your hair feel once it's dry?

It feels great. It's soft and hydrated with no residue on my hands. The Uncle Funkys gel works as my "leave in" because it's a humectant gel.

I've heard about that gel I'll try it out. can you use a light oil or butter on top instead of a creamy product?

What would you be trying to accomplish with the butter or oil? I don't use straight up butters/oils or creamy products in my regimen because they don't provide hold, and they keep your hair from being hydrated. If hold and longevity is your objective for your WNG, use the humectant gel as your base and then you top it with a stronger gel that will block out humidity.

I pineapple my hair at night and fluff it when I wake up in the morning.

I have 4b/4c hair and I've come to the realization that my hair will never be 100% tangle free. I remove the big knots during my weekly washes and go about my life the rest of the time. My hair is usually in braidouts which keeps it stretched.

Interesting that you're referencing dryness in summer. I live in MN so I have to worry about extremely dry air and cold temps for nearly half the year...my hair does great from ~May through October (it snowed yesterday, hate it here) because there's much, much, much more moisture in the air --- but then I don't worry about trying to prevent puffiness/frizz.

I primarily do wng's and while my hair is still on the shorter side, I basically pineapple at night, allow the shower steam to relax the hair in the morning, fluff and go. I'm currently using UFD + Aunt Jackie's gel. I do not have tangles and follow Jennifer Rose's suggestions to "de-shed" the hair before shampooing as much as possible, then detangle in while shampooing and conditioning. Works for me. When I do twist outs, I only twist day 1. I do not re-twist my hair at night.

I also notice that my hair retains better (moisture, the style, everything) if I can just. stop. touching it!!!! :)

I'm the laziest. I have very thick/dense 4a-ish hair. I wash my hair 1x a week, condition, rinse, use a leave in and gel on my hair (do this in sections) then let air dry all day. At night I just go to sleep. No bonnets, no special pillow case, no twists or pineapples or buns. In the morning it's smashed on my head so in the shower I use the steam and a little bit of water to make my hair look normal again. It's the simplest routine that has worked for me in all my 20 years of being natural.

I’m a wash n go girl. At night I sleep with a slap cap. In the morning I fluff. I never straighten my hair so I may have a ton of single strand knots, but they don’t cause me any issues.

So far I've been keeping it simple this time around, and it's been working out for me:

1) Wet my hands and rub it over my hair. Not so much water where my hair feels slippery. The texture I usually work best with is soft and cottony

2) Hawaiian Silky 14 n 1

3) Some Haitian Black Castor Oil that I bought from some store in my area--Idek it's like a brand brand like that. I'm sure any heavier cream will work out for me though. I find that a heavy oil paired with my braiding helps it to keep it's shape.

4) Braid my hair up in numerous braids around my head, and twists for my bangs

5) Cover with a bonnet

Only when I leave the house or I have to get on webcam will I take off my bonnet, and take out the braids and style. Or if it exceeds 1 or 2 weeks, I'll lose some stuff up and rebrand to avoid becoming matted.

When I go out I tend not to part it much or manipulate it because that makes rebranding that night a bit more difficult.

When my hair stops responding to everything, I wash & condition like normal. Then I stretch with my blow dryer, and I start over from the top.

When it becomes warmer/more humid (and oh it will, I'm in FL) I'll be getting braids or something to avoid playing with it too much.

Which gels do you guys specifically use? I want to start wearing my hair out more but my main concern is the humidity in the summer and dry/cold winters .

I use the Uncle Funkys Curlhy Magic as my base anti humectant gel and Innersense I Create Hold or Ecoslay jello shot as my topper.

But having the gels honestly is the smaller part of the equation. Using them correctly will get you the look and longevity for your style.

I'm using the same as @petty_grey UFD Curly magic with Innersence I Create Hold gel on top. I just ordered my Ecoslay gel to try last week.

when i did wear it in WNGs all the time (not so anymore as much) i would pineapple it and reapply water spritz and moisturizing lotion or cream on it daily in the morning after taking off my scarf.

Thanks! I was just looking at the UFD's Curly Magic and Ill add it to my cart as well as the Innersence. Do you guys recommend any techniques? All I know is that it should be applied on soaking wet, freshly shampooed and conditioned detangled hair.

My method is really similar to this:

The main difference is that I don't use a Denman brush to style. I just smooth my hair with my fingers. I kind of skimmed watching the video, so if she says anything crazy don't mind that . I'll see if I can come across a better video tomorrow.
