Or is this an extreme luxury?

I'm so bad with decorating and would love to hire somebody to make a good color scheme and pick out things that would fit my house. Like how much would this cost? Everytime I see this on HGTV, it seems like these decorators charge $1000s.

MY friend charges a $200 consultation fee but if he has to fly to you, that's extra.

i've never hired one, but i need one.

OP - there are probably people around you that can help. maybe a design student would be a less expensive option, and help out his/her portfolio in the process?

my hair dresser is an all around image consultant / stylist and i know she's helped decorate some of the clients homes. her salon is absolutely gorgeous.

just look around and see who's space looks good (office, salon, home, etc) and start to identify what you like and why you like it. build from there!

I do interior decorating for friends and family and am thinking about starting a side business with it

I'm thinking to charge hourly for planning and set up but you'll have to buy your own materials (furniture, decor, appliances, art, etc.) This way, I can charge a more modest rate for my talent and labor

Some designers will do it online for $250-$500. You send them a pic of your space and the dimensions and they send you a computer image or board of your designed room along with paint colors, where you can buy the stuff.

Download the houzz app.

Love that thing. I could look through that all day.

All of the above.

I did it for my business and it is not that expensive. But homes might be different.

But I want to ask is this your house or just a rental? If it's just a rental it is probably not worth it.

My moms hired some. On for a company Christmas party (she also hired a chef) we still have many of the pieces, and their Christmas trees are on point. Now they've hired one to sale the house. Both times it cost between 1 to 3k, different decades different cities. I will hire one when we finally tackle our kitchen, family room.

It really just depends on the size of the project. If the Designer is just helping you plan a layout for your existing furniture, picking some paint colors and getting some custom drapery, it could be as low as $1,500. Also, you should keep in mind that a Designer can get you discounts on furniture that you wouldn't be able to get on your own.
