Have you ever written a script for a play/movie/or tv show and pitched it to someone in Hollywood?

I always wanted to write a book/script that would be adapted into a TV series of movie. I want to do like an over the top revenge type of soap opera saga series.

I believe there are websites that allow you to pitch ideas....I remeber there was an internship for Nickoloden that allowed you to write a script for a television show and what not.

I would love to be an assistant scriptwriter on a show or movie. Seems like a dream job tbh.

Yes. First, you will need a writing group to help you network and explore ideas (you BETTER not present anything that isn't proofread and discussed). Next, you'll need a team behind you in order to achieve any goals in this industry, because you WILL need to be able to produce your own content. Example of group: DP, director, writer, lawyer.

There are also private industry groups you can join to help you advance. In LA, I would advise joining CWS, and Color Assistant. The tricky part is these groups are invite only so you'll need to network.

Good luck!

I respect the desire to 'write' and 'create' but reading this thread reminds me how disconnected from reality/facts that the general public is in regards to working in the industry. 99.9% of the stuff written here is so far off the mark when it comes to getting your foot in the door. Makes me wonder how many great ideas will never be realized simply bc the folks carrying them around have no proper direction.

So what's your advice? Or did you just come here to scold and discourage with no "direction?"

My 'advice' is if you want to be taken seriously and truly have a CAREER as a writer, don't source answers from lipstickalley and actually enroll in some university writing classes, buy the book, 'save the cat' READ it. Pay for the online 'masters classes' that Shonda Rhimes, and a host of other amazing writers/show runners have willingly offered their advice through, google scripts of great films/tv shows. READ them. Learn the structure of writing for tv and film bc it IS a specific structure. It isn't just throwing random words on a page. It's an actual skill set that requires practice. Lastly WRITE. Something. Every. Single. Day. But writing on here doesn't count. So there's your advice. You're welcome.

Does this apply to writing books as well?

DO NOT SUBMIT SCREENPLAYS WITHOUT COPYRIGHTING YOUR WORK FIRST. I cant stress this enough. People are thieves and they will deny you and take your idea. It happens all the time. Please protect your work and do research before submitting anywhere online.

I would suggest to submit through by copyright.gov and make an account. That way, If you've copyrighted your material before the infringement takes place, you can receive up to $150,000 in statutory damages, and also attorney fees can be covered if you win.

You can go the WGA route, but you have to re-register your work every 10 years. Meanwhile, while going through the library of Congress at the website mentioned in the previous paragraph, the registration will last for your whole lifetime, plus 50 years after your death.

ETA: Before for you submit any script to a contest, please make sure you throughly read the terms and conditions beforehand. For some contests, you automatically grant them the rights or ownership to your work, even if you don't win the contest at all. Amtrak pulled this stunt for their scriptwriting competition they had a few years ago and a lot of people were upset. Protect your work because as @pet stated, people will steal your work without hesitation.
