Yes. First, you will need a writing group to help you network and explore ideas (you BETTER not present anything that isn't proofread and discussed). Next, you'll need a team behind you in order to achieve any goals in this industry, because you WILL need to be able to produce your own content. Example of group: DP, director, writer, lawyer.
There are also private industry groups you can join to help you advance. In LA, I would advise joining CWS, and Color Assistant. The tricky part is these groups are invite only so you'll need to network.
Good luck!
Elaborate please.I respect the desire to 'write' and 'create' but reading this thread reminds me how disconnected from reality/facts that the general public is in regards to working in the industry. 99.9% of the stuff written here is so far off the mark when it comes to getting your foot in the door. Makes me wonder how many great ideas will never be realized simply bc the folks carrying them around have no proper direction.

My 'advice' is if you want to be taken seriously and truly have a CAREER as a writer, don't source answers from lipstickalley and actually enroll in some university writing classes, buy the book, 'save the cat' READ it. Pay for the online 'masters classes' that Shonda Rhimes, and a host of other amazing writers/show runners have willingly offered their advice through, google scripts of great films/tv shows. READ them. Learn the structure of writing for tv and film bc it IS a specific structure. It isn't just throwing random words on a page. It's an actual skill set that requires practice. Lastly WRITE. Something. Every. Single. Day. But writing on here doesn't count. So there's your advice. You're welcome.
