I swear this is the only thing that is preventing me from doing my own box braids.

I know how to do the actual braids but when I try to separate the hair before braiding, it’s left all tangled :(:(

Grab the section and pull it from the rest of the hair quickly. I find if I pull too slow, it will tangle.

Hold the hair with one hand and then pull small pieces out with the other hand. pull them fast. If you’re not as experienced, get a thread rack and pre-separate the hair and place it on there. You can grab it and feed it into your braids as your work.

I was just coming to mention this, I have one and it comes in handy.
Op you can also feather the hair and then split it into sections. And I'd suggest parting your hair off into big sections and braiding that way, it might help.

They sell pre-separated braiding hair. Afri-naptural 3x-1 is one brand that comes to mind.
